Business firms have been expressing a strong interest in an effective structure of computing resources. In this respect previous studies provide some guidelines about the deployment of hardware, but the question of which information systems (IS) would be run under the dispersed hardware is still unanswered. The main purpose of the study is to analyze the relationship between various IS characteristics and the distribution of IS. The IS characteristics studied in this research include the usage frequency of IS in a dispersed plant, the currency of information required by the headquarter, the data volume processed in the plant, the relatedness of IS with other information systems in the plant. The survey was performed over the domestic, large manufacturing firms. The most noticeable finding is that the more the updated information is required in the headquarter, or the more related IS is to other information systems in the plant, the more IS is distributed.

The purpose of multiple alarm processing is to give the operator the correct information and perception of the malfunction present in the plant. In this thesis, an APS(Alarm Processing System) is studied for fossil power plants. This APS is based on a cause-consequence trees in the knowledge representation aspect for alarm and plant and adapts alarm filtering methods using fired time information in the decision aspect. Through the cause-consequence trees and filtering methods, the Alarm Processing System finds the cause alarm among the fired multiple alarms and calculates the cause degree which represents the possibility of a fault occurring in the instruments of the plant with the information of fired alarm. The knowledge base is built via interviews and questionaries with the expert operators on the Seoul power plant unit 4. Finally, the validity of the studied APS is shown via simulations.
Recently, plant construction industries are enjoying a favorable business climate centering around developing countries and oil producing countries rich in oil money. This paper proposes a methodology of implementing case-based reasoning(CBR) system for managing knowledge like lessons learned and various documents accumulated in performing power plant construction projects which are receiving a lot of order from foreign countries such as the Middle East, etc. Our methodology is consisted of 10 steps : user requirement gathering, information modeling, case modeling, case base design, similarity function design, user interface design, case base building, CBR module development, user interface implementation, integration test. Also, to illustrate the effectiveness of proposed methodology, the real CBR system is implemented for the plant business division of 'H' company which has international competitiveness in the field of plant construction industry. At present, the implemented CBR system is successfully utilizing as storing, sharing, and reusing knowledge which is accumulated in performing power plant construction projects in the target enterprise.

Information that can be obtained from nuclear power plant trip cases is important for the efforts to reduce the trip occurrences. However, trip case reports, generally printed in documents, have shortcomings in using the contents. A database system called Information System of Trip Event Cases (INSTEC) is being developed to improve the use of trip information. INSTEC will provide the information obtained from the analysis of Korean nuclear power plant trips, such as component failures or human errors that induced the trips, problems contributed to the trips, and the sequence of unit events. In this study, in the process of INSTEC development, information analysis has been performed and a prototype of the system was developed. The prototype of INSTEC with user interface was presented to plant personnel to collect their opinion on INSTEC by using a questioninnaire. As results, it is confirmed that INSTEC would be helpful and useful for plant personnel to review the trip case information.

ISO 15926 is an international standard for the sharing and integration of plant lifecycle information. Plant design data consist of logical configuration, equipment specifications, 2D piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), and 3D plant models (shape data). Although 3D computer-aided design (CAD) data is very important data across the plant lifecycle, few studies on the exchange of 3D CAD data using ISO 15926 have been conducted so far. For this, we analyze information requirements regarding plant 3D design in the process industry. Based on the analysis, ISO 15926 templates are defined for the representation of constructive solid geometry (CSG) - based 3D design data. Since system environments for 3D CAD modeling and Semantic Web technologies are different from each other, we present system architecture for processing and visualizing plant 3D design data in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) format. Through the visualization test of ISO 15926-based 3D design data for equipment with a prototype system, feasibility of the proposed method is verified.

Recently process industries from oil and gas procedures and mining companies to manufactures of chemicals, foods, and beverages has been exploring the USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Networks) technology to improve safety of production processes. However, to apply the USN technology in the large-scale plant industry, reliability and security issues are not fully addressed yet, and the absence of the industrial sensor networking standard causes a compatibility problem with legacy equipment and systems. Although this situation, process industry such as energy plants are looking for the secure wireless plant solution to provide detailed, accurate safety monitoring from previously hard-reach, unaccordable area. In this paper, SPSF (Smart Plant Safety Framework based on Reliable-Secure USN) is suggested to fulfill the requirements of high-risk industrial environments for highly secure, reliable data collection and plant monitoring that is resistant to interference. The SPSF consists of three main layers: 1) Smart Safety Sensing Layer, 2) Smart Safety Network Layers, 3) Plant Network System Layer.

When a plant owner requests plant 3D CAD models in the format that a shipbuilding company does not use, the shipyard manually re-models plant 3D CAD models according to the owner's requirement. Therefore, it is important to develop a technology to compare the re-modeled plant 3D CAD models with original ones and to quantitatively evaluate similarity between two models. In the previous study, we developed a graphic user interface (GUI)-based comparison system where a user evaluates similarity between original and re-modeled plant 3D CAD models for piping design at the level of unit. However, an offshore plant consists of thousands of units and thus a system which compares several plant 3D CAD models at unit-level without human intervention is necessary. For this, we developed a new batch model comparison system which automatically evaluates similarity of several unit-level plant 3D CAD models using an extensible markup language (XML) file storing file location and name data about a set of plant 3D CAD models. This paper suggests system configuration of a batch-mode-based comparison system and discusses its core functions. For the verification of the developed system, comparison experiments for offshore plant 3D piping CAD models using the system were performed. From the experiments, we confirmed that similarities for several plant 3D CAD models at unit-level were evaluated without human intervention.

LQG/LTR method have a theoretical constraint that it cannot applied to nonminimum phase plant. In this paper we suggest two methods of approximation of minimum phase plant for a given nonminimum phase plant to solve this constraint. Error is described by additive form which can reduce its magnitude in broad frequency range. A optimal approximation method was suggested by using Hankel operator theory and Nehan theory it is shown by example that the methods suggested can resolve the frequency domain constraint arised in Stein and Athans approximation.
This paper introduces the Performance Monitoring System(PMS) in a thermal power plant. The purpose of the PMS is to offer the operator current performance information of plant which could be an index of plant status or information to improve plant efficiency. The PMS of Bukcheju thermal power plant unit #2&3 is implemented under the SIEMENS DCS which supplies about 150 function blocks for performance calculation and all measured signals. The performance of unit, boiler, turbines, feedwater heaters, condenser, airpreheaters, feedwater pumps will be monitored and updated for every 5 minutes in PMS of Bukcheju TPP.
Nowadays, one of the major technical issues in manufacturing is how to implement an virtual plant as an well-designed, integrated environment for sharing information and engineering collaboration among diverse engineering activities. The systematic approaches to make a virtual plant based on a 3-dimensional CAD, cell and line simulation, database and internet technologies are proposed in this paper. To do that, measuring and 3D CAD modeling technologies of many equipments, facilities and structures of the building are developed, effective management of information including models and related files in WWW environment is implemented, and precise simulations of unit cell and whole structured plant are performed. For the beginning of implementing a Virtual Automotive Plant, the Virtual Plant for the Body Shop of a Korean automotive company is constructed and implemented, Using this Virtual Plant ...
