  • Symptoms induced in the leaves of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), 'Seolhyang' and 'Eyeberry', were mosaic, distortion and black colored edge on leaves at Nonsan area, one of the important production areas in Korea. Electron microscopy by quick-dip revealed the flexuous rod-shape particles having about 550-600 nm length. Cytoplasmic inclusion bodies composed of aggregated virus particles were observed frequently in mesophyll parenchyma and epidermal cells for the leaves of strawberry. The specific primers amplifying products of 635 bp and 729 bp were developed for RT-PCR detection of Strawberry mild yellow edge virus (SMYEV). Nucleotide identity of the CP gene of SMYEV was 92.8-99.2% with those of other SMYEV isolates from Gen-Bank database.

  • This paper introduces the status of and issues related to the PSHA (Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis) of Korean Nuclear Power Plant sites. PSHA was first introduced to the nuclear industry in the mid-1980s. The Korean PSHA is based on Cornell and accommodates the modem approach for eliciting expertise and statistical treatment. Due to the low seismicity in Korea, large uncertainties exist in the PSHA database including seismic source maps, seismicity parameters of seismic sources, and attenuation formulae. Though research in seismology, geology, and earthquake engineering since the mid-1990s has significantly reduced uncertainties, a considerable amount still exists. Considering the low seismicity of the Korean Peninsula, especially the lack of strong motion data, further reduction will take several decades.

  • We performed the floristic study of Carpathian mountains in Ukraine from April 2008 till October 2009. We designated eight important areas to investigate in Ukraine Carpathians including Svydovets, Chornohora, Kuziy-Trybushany, Maramorosh, Uholka-Shyrokyi Luh, Narcissi Valley, Chorna Hora, and Yulivska Hora. The total numbers of vascular plants in investigated area were 1,349 speices from 502 genera and 112 families. The endemic species to Carpathians numbered to 65 from 49 genera belonging to 24 families, and it was corresponded to 4.8% of the 1,349 vascular species. We prepared the list of vascular plants with compiling database on useful plants. Ukraine Carpathians endemic species could be applied as high value products in research and practice. Moreover, the flora of Carpathian mountains which is distributed in five nations in eastern Europe and famous for Primeval Beech Forests (Fagus sylvatica), is useful to compare the floristic study with Korean flora.

  • A vitrification process is under development in KEPRI for the treatment of low-and medium-level radioactive waste. Although the project is for developing and building Vitrification Pilot Plant in Korea, one of KEPRI's concerns is the quality control of the vitrified glass. This paper discusses a methodology for the estimation of glass composition by on-line measurement of molten glass properties, which could be applied to the plant for real-time quality control of the glass product. By remotely measuring viscosity and density of the molten glass, the glass characteristics such as composition can be estimated and eventually controlled. For this purpose, using the database of glass composition vs. physical properties in isothermal three-component system of SiO$_2$-Na$_2$O-B$_2$O$_3$, a software TERNARY has been developed which determines the glass composition by using two known physical properties(e.g. density and viscosity).

  • In this study, a post-fire safe shutdown analysis (PFSSA) including multiple spurious operation (MSO) treatments for cables was conducted with an imaginary nuclear power plant for training using a deterministic fire analysis code. The imaginary nuclear power plant for the training consisted of a reactor containment building and an auxiliary building, including a total of 22 fire areas. The equipment including valves, pumps, emergency diesel generators, switch gears, motor control centers, and logic controllers were located in each fire area of the imaginary plant. It was assumed that each equipment is connected with two cables and that each cable passes through the fire areas along the cable trays. A database containing the information on the equipment and cables for the imaginary plant was constructed for the fire area analysis. The fire area analysis was performed for several assumed MSO scenarios, equipment logics, and cable logics. A mitigation measure using a three hour rated wrap was applied to the failed cables and cable trays after the fire area analysis.

  • Plants utilize cytochrome P450, a large superfamily of heme-containing mono-oxygenases, in the synthesis of lignins, UV protectants, pigments, defense compounds, fatty acids, hormones, and signaling molecules. Despite the overwhelming assortment of rice P450 accession numbers in the database, their functional studies are lacking. So far, there is no evidence involving rice P450 in disease immunity. Most of our understanding has been based on other plant systems that are mostly dicot. In this study, we isolated the cytochrome P450 (OsCYP71) in rice, and screened the gene using gain-of-function technique. The full-length cDNA of OsCYP71 was constitutively overexpressed using the 35S promoter. We then explored the functions of OsCYP71 in the rice - Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae pathosystem. Using the gene expression assays, we demonstrate the interesting correlation of PR gene activation and the magnitude of resistance in P450-mediated immunity.

  • The DGs (Diesel Generators) in NPP (Nuclear Power Plant) has been used for the emergency electric power source to shut down the nuclear reactor safely in case of station blackout. The RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) has been applied to DGs for increasing the safety of NPP. The structured defects of DG were not remedied by the improvement of maintenance method. As the first stage of RCM, to find the structured defects, its failure modes were searched and analyzed through the ten year maintenance information. The structured defects such as the air compressor, the lubricating oil pressure, and the insufficient load were the root causes of main failures. The air reservoir reinstallation, the lubricating oil tube modification, the load bank installation, and the qualitative instrumentation were the solutions for the hardware oriented RCM of DGs. There remains the software oriented RCM such as the rejection of useless maintenance, the preventive maintenance, the database of maintenance information, and the predictive maintenance.

  • ESR1 has been listed in the Human Obesity Gene Map as candidate gene associated with obesity. Thus, in this study, we investigated the effect of the ESR1 rs1884051 polymorphism on obesity-related variables, together with their modulations by dietary intake in Korean men. The obesity-related variables and dietary intake of 3,039 Korean men aged 40-59 years from KoGES database were analyzed. Body weight (P = 0.007), BMI (P = 0.003), waist-hip ratio (= 0.011), fat body mass (P = 0.010), and body fat percentage (P = 0.040) were significantly lower in subjects with the minor T allele of ESR1 rs1884051 than in subjects carrying the C allele. Moreover, the rs1884051 T allele was associated with a decreased risk of obesity prevalence (P = 0.040). Among the subjects whose total energy intake was below the median, carrier of the minor T allele of ESR1 rs1884051 had a lower BMI (P = 0.003) when compared with subjects carrying the C allele. In addition, among subjects whose plant protein intake was above the median, carrier of the minor T allele of ESR1 rs1884051 had a lower BMI (P = 0.044) compared with subjects carrying the C allele. Our findings demonstrate that there is a significant association between the ESR1 rs1884051 variant and obesity-related variables and this association can be potentially modified by dietary energy and plant protein intake.

  • Silene seulensis Nakai was used as traditional medicines in Korea, we collected plant from demilitarized zone (DMZ). S. seulensis was extracted with 30, 50, and 70% ethanol and partitioned successively with n-hexane, EtOAc, dichloromethane and BuOH. These extracts (30, 50 and 70% ethanol) were evaluated the cytotoxicity on B16F10 and Hacat cell lines. The LC-MS/MS data of each fractions (n-hexane, EtOAc, dichloromethane, and BuOH) were compared with MS library, combined with ultraviolet/visual (UV/Vis) and MS data for faster determine structure by database search results. This led to the identification of four compounds (1-4) from S. seulensis. These compounds was isolated first time from S. seulensis. Their chemical structures are elucidated by combinations of NMR and mass spectrometry techniques.
