Effect of mixed grinding with a planetary ball mill of starting materials before heat treatment on the crystal structure and superconduction properties in the YBaCu composite oxide was studied. The size reduction of powders too place in the early stage of grinding, followed by aggregation of the resultant fine particles. The uniformity of the composition in the mixture was improved with grinding, which later decreased in the crystal grain size and well distribution of twin phase in the sintered bodies. The critical current density of the sintered bodies obtained from the mixture ground for 60 minutes showed the maximum value about 150 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$, while critical temperatures were around 90K and were independent of the grinding time.
PVDF was used as a polymeric matrix material in this work. Nickel powders with average particles size of 200 nm or 72 nm were used as fillers. PVDF/metal submicro- and nanocomposites were prepared by means of a mixing in twin screw extruder and planetary ball mill, respectively. All samples were prepared by hot pressing method. Their electrical, thermal and morphological properties were examined by dielectric spectroscopy, DSC, FTIR, XRD, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that all properties of composites were strongly modified depending on the content of metal powders and filler particles size. Particularly, specific volume resistivity of PVDF/Ni composite with 0.2 wt.% of Ni was increased by factor of 1.5~4.
New evaluation method for the particle size and morphology via change of ground particle during a grinding process was investigated. The grinding experiments were carried by a planetary ball mill. The relationship between the particle outline of the scanning electron microscopy photograph and measurement line, the measurement contact number was evaluated. The value of contact number decreased with the increase in the particle size of the ground sample, and varied with the experimental conditions. The value of contact number, which is related to the particle size of the raw sample, changed at the various experimental conditions.

High-Speed Centrifugal Compaction Process is one of slip-using compacting method originally developed for processing of oxide ceramics. In this study, we apply the HCP to ultra-fine (0.1 micron) WC powder. Organic liquid of heptane was chosen as dispersing media to avoid possible oxidation of WC. The mixing apparatus was a key to obtain dense compacts. Only the slips mixed by high energy planetary ball mill were packed up to 55% by the HCP, and sintered to almost full density at 1673 K without any sintering aids. This sintered compact marked Vickers hardness of Hv 2750 at maximum.
This paper deals with the phase analysis of $MgB_2$ bulk using spark plasma sintering process after ball milling. Mg and amorphous B powders were used as raw materials, and milled by planetary-mill for 9 hours at argon atmosphere. In order to confirm formation of $MgB_2$ phase, DTA and XRD were used. The milled powders were fabricated to $MgB_2$ bulk at the various temperatures by Spark Plasma Sintering. The fabricated $MgB_2$ bulk was evaluated with XRD, EDS, FE-SEM and PPMS. In the DTA result, reaction on formation of $MgB_2$ phase started at $340^{\circ}C$. This means that ball milling process improves reactivity on formation of $MgB_2$ phase. The $MgB_2$ MgO and FeB phases were characterized from XRD result. MgO and FeB were undesirable phases which affect formation of $MgB_2$ phase, and it's distribution could be confirmed from EDS mapping result. Spark Plasma Sintered sample for 5 min at $700^{\circ}C$ was relatively densified and it's density and transition temperature showing super conducting property were $1.87\;g/cm^3$ and 21K.
The most general photocatalyst, $TiO_2$ and $WO_3$, are acknowledged to be ineffective in range of visible light. Therefore, many efforts have been directed at improving their activity such as: band-gap narrowing with non-metal element doping and making composites with high specific surface area to effectively separate electrons and holes. In this paper, the method was introduced to prepare a photo-active catalyst to visible irradiation by making a mixture with $TiO_2$ and $WO_3$. In the $TiO_2-WO_3$ composite, $WO_3$ absorbs visible light creating excited electrons and holes while some of the excited electrons move to $TiO_2$ and the holes remain in $WO_3$. This charge separation reduces electron-hole recombination resulting in an enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Added Ag plays the role of electron acceptor, retarding the recombination rate of excited electrons and holes. In making a mixture of $TiO_2-WO_3$ composite, the mixing route affects the photocatalytic activity. The planetary ball-mill method is more effective than magnetic stirring route, owing to a more effective dispersion of aggregated powders. The volume ratio of $TiO_2(4)$ and $WO_3(6)$ shows the most effective photocatalytic activity in the range of visible light in the view point of effective separation of electrons and holes.
The effects of the particle size of precursor powder on the microstructure and Jc of Ag-sheathed Ri-2223 tapes were investigated. The calcined powder with overall composition of $Bi_{1-89}Pb_{0-41}Sr_{2-01}Ca_{2-23}Cu_{3-03}O_{y}$ was milled for various times using planetary ball mill. The transport property of the tapes were found to depend strongly on the particle size of the precursor powder Enhanced reactivity of the milled powder facilitated the formation of 2223 phase and resulted in an increase of Jc. Excessive milling, however, led to the amorphisation of the powder and degraded the electrical property of the tapes.
Ultra-fine zirconium carbide (ZrC) powder with nano-sized primary particles was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction method by using nano-sized $ZrO_2$ and nano-sized graphite powders mixture. The synthesized ZrC powder was well dispersed after simple milling process. After heat-treatment at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under vacuum, ultra-fine ZrC powder agglomerates (average size, $4.2{\mu}m$) were facilely obtained with rounded particle shape and particle size of ~200 nm. Ultra-fine ZrC powder with an average particle size of 316 nm was obtained after ball milling process in a planetary mill for 30 minutes from the agglomerated ZrC powder.
The present work describes the effect of dry grinding of a mixture composed of $Y_2O_3$, $BaCO_3$ and CuO powders with a planetary ball mill before heat treatment on crystal structure and superconductivity in the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$. The specific surface area of the ground product of mixture decreased with an increase in the grinding time, after showing an upward trend up to 60 minutes of grinding. The critical current density, which was influenced by the grinding time of mixture, indicates the maximum value of about $150A/cm^2$ in the case of 60 minutes grinding, while the critical temperature, which were around 90K, for the sintered bodies were almost independent of the grinding time.
Lee et al. reported that a mixture of Cu and Ta, the combination of which is characterized by a positive heat of mixing, $\{Delta}H_{mix}$ of +2 kJ/㏖, can be amorphized by mechanical alloying(MA). It is our aim to investigate to what extent the MA is capable of producing a non-equilibrium phase with increasing the heat of mixing. The system chosen is the binary $Cu_{30}Mo_{70}$ with $\{Delta}H_{mix}$=+19 kJ/㏖. The mechanical alloying was carried out using a Fritsch P-5 planetary mill under Ar gas atmosphere. The vial and balls are made of Cu containing 1.8-2.0 wt.%Be to avoid contaminations arising mainly from Fe when steel balls and vial are used. The MA powders were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, EXAFS and thermal analysis. We conclude that two phase mixture of nanocrystalline fcc-Cu and bcc-Mo with grain size of 10 nm is formed by the ball-milling for a 3:7 mixture of pure Cu and Mo, the evidence for which has been deduced from the thermodynamic and structural analysis based on the DSC, X-ray diffraction and EXAFS spectra.
