Recent analysis on the thermophysical property of asteroids revealed that their thermal inertia decrease with their sizes at least for main belt asteroids. However, little is known about that of comet-like bodies. In this work we utilized a simple thermophysical model (TPM) to calculate the thermal inertia of a bare nucleus of the comet P/2006 HR30 (Siding Spring) and an asteroid in comet-like orbit 107P/(4015) Wilson-Harrington from AKARI observation data. From five spectroscopic observations of the targets, we find out that the former has thermal inertia of around $2,000J\;m^{-2}K^{-1}s^{-1/2}$ (using pV = 0.055) and the latter has about $1,000-2000J\;m^{-2}K^{-1}s^{-1/2}$ (using pV = 0.055 and 0.043, respectively). These are high enough for both of them to deposit water ice at few centimeters depth, and hence it is difficult to say they are cometary based on the results of this study. These values, however, dependent significantly on the errors of observation and the uncertainties of the input parameters, as well as other conditions which are ignored in simple TPM approach, such as shape model and surface roughness. Further detailed analyses on these cometary bodies will shed light on our understanding of the detailed surfacial characteristics of them.
Two different types of graphite, such as flake graphite (FG) and spherical graphite (SG), were used as anode materials for a lithium-ion secondary battery in order to investigate their electrochemical performance. The FG particles were prepared by pulverizing natural graphite with a planetary mill. The SG particles were treated by immersing them in acid solutions or mixing them with various carbon additives. With a longer milling time, the particle size of the FG decreased. Since smaller particles allow more exposure of the edge planes toward the electrolyte, it could be possible for the FG anodes with longer milling time to deliver high reversible capacity; however, their initial efficiency was found to have decreased. The initial efficiency of SG anodes with acid treatments was about 90%, showing an over 20% higher value than that of FG anodes. With acid treatment, the discharge rate capability and the initial efficiency improved slightly. The electrochemical properties of the SG anodes improved slightly with carbon additives such as acetylene black (AB), Super P, Ketjen black, and carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the cyclability was much improved due to the effect of the conductive bridge made by carbon additives such as AB and Super P.
The charge-discharge characteristics of the $Mg_2Ni-x$ wt.%Nd (x = 0~3) electrodes were investigated. The electrodes were prepared by the mechanical grinding of the induction-melted $Mg_2Ni$ alloy powders with Ni and/or Nd using planetary ball mill apparatus. The discharge capacity of the $Mg_2Ni$ alloy increased with the increase in the nickel content. The electrode possessing 100 wt.% nickel powder showed the initial capacity of 760 mAh/g and the capacity decay with the cycle number was less than that of the 55 wt.% nickel powder. The Nd was added to this composition. It was found that the $Mg_2Ni-100$ wt.%Ni -0.2 wt.%Nd alloy showed an excellent charge-discharge cycle characteristics compared with the other reported Mg-Ni alloy system. The discharge capacity was 400 mAh/g after 70 cycles. Such an improved cycle life seems to be attributed to the improvement in the corrosion characteristics of the alloy. The anodic polarization curve of the $Mg_2Ni-100$ wt.%Ni-0.2 wt.%Nd alloy exhibited better passivating behavior than that of the $Mg_2Ni-100$ wt.%Ni.
A large number of studies on the various characteristics of epoxy-layered silicate nanocomposites, such as electric and mechanical, morphology have been conducted and contributed to improve their characteristics. However, studies on the effects of its thermal conductivities in the thermal properties are not enough, even though there are some excellent evaluations for its insulation performances. Thermal properties will cause thermal degradation and significantly affect the reliability of these epoxy-layered silicate nanocomposites. In the results of the analysis of epoxy-layered silicate nanocomposites $T_g$ for various types of organoclays (10A, 15A, 20A, 30B, and 93A), it showed an excellent thermal property of 10A. Also, it represented low values in storage modulus and mechanical Tan (Delta) at a high temperature section 140$^{\circ}C$ and excellent thermal properties due to its movement to the high temperature section in the case of the property of 10A in the measurement of DMA elastics and mechanical losses. In the results of the measurement of thermal conductivities, power ultrasonic applications represented a significant increase in thermal conductivities in the case of the applications of power ultrasonic and planetary centrifugal mixers. Based on these results, it is necessary to perform related studies because it can be applied as useful materials for future power facilities applications in mold and impregnate insulation.
There have been recent studies which revealed a tendency that thermal inertia decreases with the size of asteroidal bodies, and suggestions that thermal inertias of cometary bodies should be much smaller than those asteroidal counterparts, regardless of comets' nuclear sizes, which hints a way to differentiate cometary candidates from asteroids using thermal inertia information. We thus selected two comet-like objects from AKARI satellite of JAXA, namely, 107P/ (4015) Wilson-Harrington and P/2006 HR30 (Siding Spring), and applied simple thermophysical model to test the idea. Both targets did not show any comet-like activity during the observations. From the model, we found Wilson-Harrington to have size of 3.7-4.4 km, geometric albedo 0.040-0.055 and thermal inertia of 100-250 J m-2 K-1 s-0.5, which coincide with previous works, and HR30 to have size of 24-27 km, geomoetric albedo of 0.035-0.045 with thermal inertia of 250-1000 J m-2 K-1 s-0.5. HR30 is found to have the rotation pole near the ecliptic plane (the latitude between -20 and +60 deg). Based on the results, we conjecture that comet-like objects are not clearly distinguishable from asteroidal counterpart using thermal inertia.
In this paper, power flow characteristics of a hydromechanical transmission(HMT) are investigated using network analysis. The HMT used in this study consist of a hydrostatic unit(HSU), planetary gear sets, clutches and brakes providing forward 4 speeds and backward 2 speeds. Since the HMT power flows showing a closed loop and the HSU efficiency varies depending on the pressure and speed, a systematic approach is required to analyze the power transmission characteristics of the HMT. In order to analyze the closed loop power flow and the HSU power loss which changes depending on the pressure and speed, network model is constructed fur each speed range. In addition, an algorithm is proposed to calculate an accurate HSU loss corresponding to the experimental results. It is found from the network analysis that the torque and speed of each transmission element including the HSU can be obtained as well as direction of the power flow by the proposed algorithm. It is expected that the network analysis can be used in the design of relatively complicated transmission system such as HMT.
Wind power is a type of clean energy source which does not produce carbon dioxide. The wind turbine industry is considered as a major growth industry in many countries. The main cause of wind turbine failure arises in the wind turbine gearbox, and the main type of damage occurs in the bearings and gears. Therefore, predictions of gear and bearing damage are very important to ensure the reliability of the wind turbine reducers used in these systems. In this research, in order to optimize the wind turbine reducer, a series of simulations and redesigns was done using the tool RomaxDesigner. The RomaxDesigner model was used to analyze the bearing life of the duty cycle for a 5 MW wind-turbine pitch drive and to calculate the load in operating states. The reducer was designed to satisfy the life requirement by analyzing bearing damage and calculating the stress values of the main parts of the reducer.
This paper was designed to fabricate the miniature spur gear with pitch circle of 2.25mm using extrusion process of a mechanically alloyed Al-78wt%Zn powder. The mechanical alloying of the powder particles were performed for ball milled times of 4h, 8h, 16 and 32h by the planetary ball milling. The mechanical properties of these alloyed powders, which were compacted and sintered-cylindrical preforms, were estimated using compression test. The results showed that the alloyed powder with average particle size of $10{\mu}m$ milled for 32h has the highest compressive(fractured) strength(288MPa). Extrusions of the miniature spur gear using the alloyed powder were carried out at different extrusion temperatures. Extrusion temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ provided the spur gear with the highest relative density and Vickers hardness and without any surface defects.
The wind power system is spotlighted as one of the no-pollution power generation systems. The system uses winds as power source that are rotated the blade and the rotating power from blade generate the electricity power. Gearbox needs to transfer the wind powers that have the high-torque-low-speed characteristics to generator that have the low-torque-high-speed characteristics. Because the wind power system generally locates the remote place like seaside or mountainside and the gearbox installs on the limited and high placed space, the gearbox of the wind power system is required the optimal space design and high reliability. In this paper, the structure of the gearbox is proposed to achieve the optimal space and efficiency by compounding the planetary gear train that has the high power density and parallel type gear train that has the long service life. The design parameters that are affected the service life are studied. The gear ratio and face width are investigated as an affected parameter for design sensitivity of service life.
A new method to fabricate the fine magnetic abrasives by using mechanical alloying is proposed. The mechanical alloying process is a solid powder process where the powder particles are subjected to high energetic impact by the balls in a vial. As the powder particles in the vial are continuously impacted by the balls, cold welding between particles and fracturing of the particles take place repeatedly during the ball milling process using a planetary mill. After the manufacturing process, fine magnetic abrasives which the guest abrasive particles c lung to the base metal matrix without bonding material can be obtained. The shape of the newly fabricated fine magnetic abrasives was investigated using SEM and its polishing performance was verified by experiment. It is very helpful to finishing the injection mold steel in final polishing stage. The areal ms surface roughness of the workpiece after several polishing processes has decreased to a few nanometer scales.
