I present the mean metallicity distribution of stars in the Milky Way based on photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I utilize an empirically calibrated set of stellar isochrones developed in previous work to estimate the metallicities of individual stars to a precision of 0.2 dex for reasonably bright stars across the survey area. I also obtain more precise metallicity estimates using priors from the Gaia parallaxes for relatively nearby stars. Close to the Galactic mid-plane (|Z| < 2 kpc), a mean metallicity map reveals deviations from the mirror symmetry between the northern and southern hemispheres, displaying wave-like oscillations. The observed metallicity asymmetry structure is almost parallel to the Galactic mid-plane, and coincides with the previously known asymmetry in the stellar number density distribution. This result reinforces the previous notion of the plane-parallel vertical waves propagating through the disk, which have been excited by a massive halo substructure such as the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy plunging through the Milky Way's disk. This work provides evidence that the Gaia phase-space spiral may continue out to |Z| ~ 1.5 kpc.
The natural frequencies of a flexible spinning disk misaligned with the axis of rotation are studied in an analytic manner. The effects of misalignment on the natural frequency need to be investigated, because the misalignment between the axis of symmetry and the axis of relation cannot be avoided in the removable disks such as CD-R, CD-RW or DVD disks. Assuming that the in -plane displacements are in steady state and the out-of-plane displacement is in dynamic state, the equations of motion are derived for the misaligned spinning disk. After the exact solutions are obtained fur the steady -state in-plane displacements, they are plugged into the equation for the dynamic-state out-of-plane motion. The resultant equation is a linear equation for the out -of-plane displacement, which is discretized by the Galerkin method. Based on the discretized dquations, the effects of the misalignment are analyzed on the vibration characteristics of the spinning disk, i.e., the natural frequencies and the critical speed.
Background: Treatment planning the correction of a transverse maxillary occlusal plane cant often involves a degree of qualitative "eyeballing", with the attendant possibility of error in the estimated judgement. A simple chair side technique permits quantification of the extent of asymmetry and thereby quantitative measurements for the correction of the occlusal plane cant. Methods: A measuring instrument may be constructed by soldering the edge of a stainless steel dental ruler at 90° to the flat surface of a similar ruler. With the patient either standing in natural head position, or alternatively seated upright in the dental chair, and a dental photographic retractor in situ, the flat under-surface of the horizontal part of this measuring instrument is placed on a unilateral segment of a bilateral structure, e.g. the higher maxillary canine orthodontic bracket hook. The vertical ruler is held next to the contralateral canine tooth, and the vertical distance measured directly from the canine bracket to the flat under-surface of the horizontal part of the measuring instrument. Results: This vertical distance quantifies the overall extent of movement required to level the maxillary occlusal plane. Conclusions: This measuring instrument and simple chair side technique helps to quantify the overall extent of surgical levelling required and may be a useful additional technique in our clinical diagnostic armamentarium.

We present a one-dimensional annular plate element with which the in-plane vibration of full disks can be analyzed efficiently and accurately by using the FEM. Its elementary mass matrix and stiffness matrix are derived, respectively, from the virtual work by effective forces and the virtual strain energy. The static deformation modes obtained from an integration of the differential equilibrium equations of the annular plate are used as interpolation functions of the one-dimensional annular plate element. The in-plane natural vibration characteristics of a 2-step full disk and a uniform full disk are analysed. Its results are compared with the results obtained by utilizing two-dimensional 8-node quadrilateral plane elements and cyclic symmetry of the disk. And also, by comparing with the theoretical results of previous researchers, the efficiency and accuracy of the presented element are verified.
Relaxation of magnon in a very thin ferromagnetic film through spontaneous emission of photon shows an enhancement of the decay rate due to the phase coherence between the magnon and the planar component of wave vector of photon. The coupling between magnon and photon under a strong external magnetic field is considered only at the lowest order one-magnon one-photon process, which we believe the most dominant channel for the radiation from the system. Theoretical understanding related to the geometric confinement is pursued; the phase coherence due to the crystal symmetry in the film plane gives rise to superradiative emission on one hand, but the symmetry breaking along the direction perpendicular to the film renders the possibility of emission itself, providing the increased degrees of freedom for the photon.
In the case of existing in free-edge delaminations of composite laminates which are symmetry with respect to mid-plane in laminates also, in the case of asymmetry and anti-symmetry, the generalized quasi-three dimensional displacement field equations developed from quasi-three dimensional displacement field equations can be applied to solve above cases. We introduce three paramenters in this paper, which have not been used in quasi-three dimensional displacement field equations until now. To the laminate subjected to the axial extension strain $\varepsilon$0(C1) in $\chi$-direction, the bending deformation $\chi$$\chi$(C$_2$) around у-direction, the bending deformation w$\chi$(C$_4$) around z-direction and the twisting deformation $\chi$$\chi$y(C$_3$) around $\chi$-direction .The generalized quasi-three dimensional displacement field equations are able to be analyzed efectively.
A semi-infinite interfacial crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strips under out-of-plane clamped displacements is analyzed. Using Fourier integral transform the problem is formulated and the Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving this equation the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained, where the results get more general expressions applicable not only to isotropic/orthotropic materials but also to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the interfacial crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor is obtained as a closed form, which is decreased as the velocity of crack propagation increases. The critical velocity where the stress intensity factor comes to zero is obtained, which agrees with the lower value between the critical values of parallel crack merged in the material 1 and 2 adjacent to the interface. Using the near tip fields of stresses and displacements, the dynamic energy release rate is also obtained as a form of the stress intensiy factor.
A semi-infinite parallel crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strip under anti-plane clamped displacement is analyzed. Using Fourier integral transform a Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving this equation the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are determined, where the results give the more general expression applicable to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the parallel crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor and energy release rate are also obtained as a closed form, which are the results applicable to the problem both of dynamic and static crack under the same geometry as this study. The stress intensity factor approaches zero at the critical crack velocity which is less than the shear wave velocity, but in typical case of isotropic or orthotropic material agrees with the velocity of shear wave. Also a circular shear stress around crack tip is considered, from which the stress is shown to be approximately symmetric about the horizontal axis. Referring to the maximum stress criteria, it could be shown that a brenched crack is formed by crack growth as crack velocity increases.
