This paper reports the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer swirl on the instability modes of underexpanded supersonic jets emerging from plane rectangular nozzles. The effects of boundary layer swirl at the nozzle exit on thrust and mixing of supersonic rectangular jets are also considered. The previous study was performed with a 30°boundary layer swirl (S=0.41) in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. At this study, a 45°boundary layer swirl (S=1.0) is applied in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. A three-dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code with Baldwin-Lomax and Chiens $\kappa$-$\xi$ two-equation turbulence models was used for numerical simulation. A shock adaptive grid system was applied to enhance shock resolution. The nozzle aspect ratio used in this study was 5.0, and the fully-expanded jet Mach number was 1.526. The \"flapping\" and \"pumping\" oscillations were observed in the jets small dimension at frequencies of about 3,900Hz and 7,800Hz, respectively. In the jets large dimension, \"spanwise\" oscillations at the same frequency as the small dimensions \"flapping\" oscillations were captured. As reported before with a 30°nozzle exit boundary layer swirl, the induction of 45°swirl to the nozzle exit boundary layer also strongly enhances jet mixing with the reduction of thrust by 10%.

The objective of this study is to investigate the role of large-scale coherent structures in a spatially developing plane mixing layers. To achieve this, we have to look into the mutual interactions between three-dimensional large-scale coherent structures and the mean flow. Our attention will be focused on the energy exchange mechanism between the various modes, and the effects of the nonlinear evolution of the phases of the interacting modes. Linear stability of the three-dimensional viscous shear layer is formulated and solved as the basis for the solution of the nonlinear formulation based on the energy method. The importance of the initial conditions that may affect the evolution of the flow has been examined. It has been numerically calculated the nonlinear effects arising from the interactions among the three-dimensional large-scale coherent structures in a spatially developing plane mixing layers. The results of this study provide useful parametric information for the control of shear layer in practical applications in the mixing and transport augmentation.

Study of turbulent mixing layers has been a popular subject from the point of view of both practical application and phenomenological importance in engineering field. Turbulent mixing layers can be applied in many fields where rapid transition to turbulence is desirable in order to prevent boundary layer separation or to enhance mixing. The ability to control mixing, structure and growth of the shear flow would obviously have a considerable impact on many engineering applications. In addition to practical applications, free shear flows are one of the simplest flows to understand the fundamental mechanism in the transition process to turbulence. After the discovery of large-scale vortical structure in free shear flows many researchers have investigated the physical mechanism of generation and dissipation processes of the vortical structure. This study investigated the role of the large-scale vortical structures in the turbulent mixing layer using LES(Large-Eddy Simulation). The result shows that the pairing interaction of the vortical structure plays an important role in the growth rate of a mixing layer. It is found that the turbulence quantities depend strongly on the velocity ratio. It is also found that the vorticity in the high-velocity-side can extract energy from the mean flow, while the vorticity in the low-velocity-side lose energy by the viscous dissipation. Finally the results suggest the guideline to obtain the desired flow by control of the velocity ratio.

A simple but efficient grid generation technique by using the modified compressible form of stream function has been formulated. Transformation of a physical plane to a streamline plane, the Von Mises Transformation, has been widely used to solve the differential equations governing flow phenomena, however, limitation arises in low velocity region of boundary layer, mixing layer and wake region where the relatively large grid spacing is inevitable. Modified Von Mises Transformation with simple mathematical adjustment for the stream function is suggested and applied to solve the confined coaxial turbulent jet mixing with simple $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. Comparison with several experimental data of axial mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds shear stress distribution shows quite good agreement in the mixing layer except in the centerline where the turbulent kinetic energy distributions were somewhat under estimated. This formulation is strongly suggested to be utilized specially for free turbulent mixing layers in axisymmetric flow conditions such as the investigation of mixing behavior, jet noise production and reduction for Turbofan engines.

Various jet engines (Turbine engine family and RAM Jet engine) have been developed for high speed aircrafts. but their application to hypersonic flight is restricted by principle problems such as increase of total pressure loss and thermal stress. Therefore, the development of next generation propulsion system for hypersonic aircraft is a very important subject in the aerospace engineering field, SCRAM Jet engine based on a key technology, Supersonic Combustion. is supposed as the best choice for the hypersonic flight. Since Supersonic Combustion requires both rapid ignition and stable flame holding within supersonic air stream, much attention have to be given on the mixing state between air stream and fuel flow. However. the wider diffusion of fuel is expected with less total pressure loss in the supersonic air stream. So. in this study the direction of fuel injection is inclined 30 degree to downstream and the total pressure of jet is controlled for lower penetration height than thickness of boundary layer. Under these flow configuration both streams, fuel and supersonic air stream, would not mix enough. To spread fuel wider into supersonic air an aerodynamic force, baroclinic torque, is adopted. Baroclinic torque is generated by a spatial misalignment between pressure gradient (shock wave plane) and density gradient (mixing layer). A wedge is installed in downstream of injector orifice to induce an oblique shock. The schlieren optical visualization from side transparent wall and the total pressure measurement at exit cross section of combustor estimate how mixing is enhanced by the incidence of shock wave into supersonic boundary layer composed by fuel and air. In this study non-combustionable helium gas is injected with total pressure 0.66㎫ instead of flammable fuel to clarify mixing process. Mach number 1.8. total pressure O.5㎫, total temperature 288K are set up for supersonic air stream.

For present investigation Fe/MgO/Fe/Co multilayer stack is grown on Si substrate using e-beam evaporation in ultrahigh vacuum. This stack is irradiated perpendicularly by 120 MeV $Ag^{8+}$ at different fluences ranging from $1{\times}10^{11}$ to $1{\times}10^{13}ions/cm^2$ in high vacuum using 15UD Pelletron Accelerator at Inter University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi. Magnetic measurements carried out on pre and post irradiated stacks show significant changes in the shape of perpendicular hysteresis which is relevant with previous observation of re-orientation of magnetic moment along the direction of ion trajectory. However increase in plane squareness may be due to the modification of interface structure of stacks. X-ray reflectivity measurements show onset of interface roughness and interface mixing. X-ray diffraction measurements carried out using synchrotron radiation shows amorphous nature of MgO and Co layer in the stack. Peak corresponding body centered Fe [JCPDS-06-0696] is observed in X-ray diffraction pattern of pre and post irradiated stacks. Peak broadening shows granular nature of Fe layer. Estimated crystallite size is $22{\pm}1nm$ for pre-irradiated stack. Crystallite size first increases with irradiation then decreases. Structural quality of these stacks was further studied using transmission electron microscopic measurements. Thickness from these measurements are 54, 36, 23, 58 and 3 nm respectively for MgO, Fe, MgO, Fe+Co and Au layers in the stack. These measurements envisage poor crystallinity of different layers. Interfaces are not clear which indicate mixing at interface. With increase fluence mixing and diffusion was increased in the stack. X-ray absorption spectroscopic measurements carried out on these stacks show changes of Fe valence state after irradiation along with change of O(2p)-metal (3d) hybridized state. Valence state change predicts oxide formation at interface which causes enhanced in-plane magnetization.

An experiment has been carried out to investigate the aerodynamic effect of surface roughness on the characteristics of the turbulent separation and reattaching flow downstream of a backward-facing step. The distributions of boundary layer parameters, forward-flow fraction and turbulent stresses in the region near the reattachment point are measured with a split film sensor. It is demonstrated that the streamwise distributions of the forward-flow fraction in the recirculation and reattachment regions are similar, independent of the roughness. The reattachment length is found to be only weakly affected by the roughness. It is also shown that the velocity profile on the rough surface approaches to that of the equilibrium turbulent boundary layer faster than that on the smooth surface in the redeveloping region after reattachment.

The Present Study describes the numerical investigations concerning a fuel(Hydrogen), inert gas (Nitrogen) or supersonic air stream issued between each other. The basic flow configuration consists of a plane, double shear/mixing layer flow. For the numerical solution, a fully conservative unsteady $2^{nd}$ order time accurate sub-iteration method and a $2^{nd}$ order Total Variation Diminishing(TVD) scheme are used with the finite volume method(FVM). The results are consist of three categories ; single shear layer consist of fuel and supersonic air stream, inert gas stream issued between supersonic air and fuel stream, fuel gas stream issued between supersonic air and fuel stream. The numerical calculations has been carried out in case of 1,2, and 4mm thickness of center stream. The width of total gas stream is 4cm.

The flow characteristics of two-dimensional turbulent offset jet which is discharged parallel to a solid wall has been studied experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, 3-hole pitot tube and 2 channel constant temperature hot-wire anemometer are used to measure local mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress while scannivalve is used to measure the wall pressure distribution. It is confirmed experimentally that local mean velocity is closely related to wall pressure distribution. It is also verified that for large Reynolds numbers and fixed step height there exists a similarity in the distribution of wall pressure coefficient. The maximum values of turbulence intensity occur in the top and bottom mixing layers and the magnitude of Reynolds stress becomes large in the lower mixing layer than in the top mixing layer due to the effect of streamline curvature and entrainment. In the numerical analysis, standard k-.epsilon. model based on eddy viscosity model and Leschziner and Rodi model based on algebraic stress model are adopted. The numerical analyses predict shorter reattachment lengths than the experiment, and this difference is judged to be due mainly to the problem of turbulence model constants and numerical algorithm. This also causes the inconsistency between the two results for other turbulence quantities in the recirculation region and impingement region, which constitutes a subject of a continued future study.

The basic flow configuration is composed of a plane, double shear layer where relatively thin mid gas layer is sandwiched between air and fuel stream. The present study describes numerical investigations concerning the combustion enhancement according to a variation of mid layer thickness. In this case, the effect of heat release in turbulent mixing layers is important. For the numerical solution, a fully conservative unsteady $2^{nd}$ order time accurate sub-iteration method and $2^{nd}$ order TVD scheme are used with the finite volume method including k-${\omega}$ SST model. The results consists of three categories; single shear layer consists of fuel and air, inert gas sandwiched between fuel and air, cold fuel gas sandwiched between fuel and air. The numerical calculations has been carried out in case of 1, 2, 4 mm of mid layer thickness. The height of total gas stream is 4 cm. The combustion region is broadened in case of inert gas layer of 2, 4 mm thickness and cold fuel layer of 4 mm thickness compared with single shear layer.
