As an example of many possible applications of OSMI data, we present a method to detect red tides. In Korean waters, red tides usually occur in the South Sea where the turbidity is usually high due to strong tidal mixing in the shallow sea. The conventional case 1 chlorophyll algorithm cannot be applied since it cannot distinguish chlorophyll from SS (suspended sediments). In October 1998, a red tide outbreak occurred off the coast of Kunsan. We analyzed the SeaWiFS data of the outbreak. The standard SeaWiFS chlorophyll algorithm OC2 was poor in identifying the red tides. However, comparison of spectra of normalized water-leaving radiance indicates that red tide pixels can be distinguished from sediment-laden pixels. Channel 443 and 555 were effective in showing the spectral characteristics. We suggest K490 algorithm as an example in summarizing the information of the spectra and thereby in distinguishing the red tide pixels. Further development is desirable.

Digital images are often corrupted by impulse noise, and it is very important to remove random-valued impulse noise. Cleaning such noise is far more difficult than cleaning salt and pepper impulse noise. In this paper, we proposed an efficient way to remove random-valued impulse noise from digital images. This novel method comprises two stages. The first stage is to detect the random-valued impulse noise in the image and the pixels are roughly divided into two classes, which are "noise-free pixel" and "noise pixel". Then, the second stage is to eliminate the random-valued impulse noise from the image. In this stage, only the "noise pixels" are processed. The "noise-free pixels" are copied directly to the output image. Simulation results indicated that our method provides a significant improvement over many other existing algorithms.
Poisson model and Gamma-Poisson model are popularly used to analyze statistical behavior from defective data. The methods are based on binary criteria, that is, good or failure. However, manufacturing industries prefer polytomous criteria for classifying manufactured products due to flexibility of marketing. In this paper, I introduce two multivariate Gamma-Poisson(MGP) models and estimation methods of the parameters in the models, which are able to handle polytomous data. The models and estimators are verified on defective pixels of LCD manufacturing. Experimental results show that both the independent MGP model and the multinomial MGP model have excellent performance in terms of mean absolute deviation and the choice of method depends on the purpose of use.
This paper proposes a high speed systolic array architecture for full search block matching algorithm (FBMA). The pixels of the search area for a reference block are input only one time to find the matched candidate block and reused to compute the sum of absolute difference (SAD) for the adjacent candidate blocks. Each row of designed 2-dimensional systolic array compares the reference block with the adjacent blocks of the same row in search area. The lower rows of the designed array get the pixels from the upper row and compute the SAD with reusing the overlapped pixels of the candidate blocks within same column of the search area. This designed array has no data broadcasting and global paths. The comparison with existing architectures shows that this array is superior in terms of throughput through it requires a little more hardware.
In the images of a video camera employed for surveillance, detecting targets by extracting foreground image is of great importance. The foreground regions detected, however, include not only moving targets but also their shadows. This paper presents a novel technique to detect shadow pixels in the foreground image of a video camera. The image characteristics of video cameras employed, a web-cam and a CCD, are first analysed in the HSV color space and a pixel-level shadow detection technique is proposed based on the analysis. Compared with existing techniques where unified criteria are used to all pixels, the proposed technique determines shadow pixels utilizing a fact that the effect of shadowing to each pixel is different depending on its brightness in background image. Such an approach can accommodate local features in an image and hold consistent performance even in changing environment. In experiments targeting pedestrians, the proposed technique showed better results compared with an existing technique.
The extraction of 'end-pixels' (i.e. end-members) aims to quantify the abundance of different materials in a single pixel, which becomes popular in the subpixel analysis for hyperspectral dataset. In this paper, we present a new concept called 'End-Pixel of Features (EPF)' to extends the concept of end-pixels for multispectral data and even panchromatic data. The algorithm combines the advantages of previous simplex and clustering methods to search the EPFs in the feature space and reduce the effects of noise. Some experimental results show that, the proposed methodology can be successfully used to hyperspectral data and other remote sensing data.

We propose a subpixel scale elemental image generation method to correct the errors created by finite display pixel size in integral imaging. In this paper, two errors are mainly discussed: pickup-and-display mismatch error and mismatch error between pixel pitch and lens pitch. The proposed method considers the relative positions between lenses and pixels in subpixel scale. Our proposed pickup method calculates the position parameters, generates an elemental image with pixels completely inside the lens, and generates an elemental image with border pixels using a weighted sum method. Appropriate experiments are presented to verify the validity of the proposed method.

Thermal characterization of individual pixels in microbolometer infrared image sensors is needed for optimal design and improved performance. In this work, we used thermoreflectance microscopy on uncooled microbolometer image sensors to investigate the thermal characteristics of individual pixels. Two types of microbolometer image sensors with a shared-anchor structure were fabricated and thermally characterized at various biases and vacuum levels by measuring the temperature distribution on the surface of the microbolometers. The results show that thermoreflectance microscopy can be a useful thermal characterization tool for microbolometer image sensors.
