  • Forest cover density studies using high resolution satellite data and object oriented classification are limited in India. This article focuses on the potential use of QuickBird satellite data and object oriented classification in forest density mapping. In this study, the high-resolution satellite data was classified based on NDVI/pixel based and object oriented classification methods and results were compared. The QuickBird satellite data was found to be suitable in forest density mapping. Object oriented classification was superior than the NDVI/pixel based classification. The Object oriented classification method classified all the density classes of forest (dense, open, degraded and bare soil) with higher producer and user accuracies and with more kappa statistics value compared to pixel based method. The overall classification accuracy and Kappa statistics values of the object oriented classification were 83.33% and 0.77 respectively, which were higher than the pixel based classification (68%, 0.56 respectively). According to the Z statistics, the results of these two classifications were significantly different at 95% confidence level.

  • Most existing low-light enhancement algorithms either use a large number of training parameters or lack generalization to real-world scenarios. This paper presents a novel lightweight and robust pixel-wise polynomial approximation-based deep network for low-light image enhancement. For mapping the low-light image to the enhanced image, pixel-wise higher-order polynomials are employed. A deep convolution network is used to estimate the coefficients of these higher-order polynomials. The proposed network uses multiple branches to estimate pixel values based on different receptive fields. With a smaller receptive field, the first branch enhanced local features, the second and third branches focused on medium-level features, and the last branch enhanced global features. The low-light image is downsampled by the factor of 2b-1 (b is the branch number) and fed as input to each branch. After combining the outputs of each branch, the final enhanced image is obtained. A comprehensive evaluation of our proposed network on six publicly available no-reference test datasets shows that it outperforms state-of-the-art methods on both quantitative and qualitative measures.

  • A new 8-bit single-slope ADC using analog RAMP generator with digitally controllable dynamic range has been proposed and simulated for column level or per-pixel CMOS image sensor application. The conversion gain of ADC can he controlled easily by using frequency divider with digitally controllable diviber ratio, coarse/fine RAMP with class-AB op-amp, resistor strings, decoder, comparator, and etc. The chip area and power consumption can be decreased by simplified analog circuits and passive components. Proposed frequency divider has been implemented and verified with 0.65um, 2-poly, 2-metal standard CMOS process. And the functional verification has been simulated and accomplished in a 0.35$\mu$m standard CMOS process.

  • The scalable vector graphics (SVG) standard has allowed the complex bitmap images to be represented by vector based graphics and provided some advantages over the raster based graphics in applications, for example, where scalability is required. This paper presents an algorithmto convert bitmap images into SVG format. The algorithm is an integration of pixel-level triangulation, data dependent triangulation, a new image mesh simplification algorithm, and a polygonization process. Both triangulation techniques enable the image quality (especially the edge features) to be preserved well in the reconstructed image and the simplification and polygonization procedures reduce the size of the SVG file. Experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • An image fidelity assessment using the edge histogram descriptor (EHD) of MPEG-7 is presented. Neither additional data nor fragile watermarking is needed, and there is no need to access the original image as a reference. Only the EHDs of the original image and the received image are required. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) obtained by comparing the EHD extracted from the received image and that of the original image is used to assess the noise level of the received image. Experimental results show that the PSNRs calculated from the conventional pixel-to-pixel gray level and from the proposed bin-to-bin EHD maintain a proportional relationship. This implies that the EHD can be used instead of image data for the image fidelity assessments.

  • Line tracking is a well defined method of mobile robot navigation. It is simple in concept, technically easy to implement, and already employed in many industrial sites. Among several different line tracking methods, magnetic sensing is widely used in practice. In comparison, vision-based tracking is less popular due mainly to its sensitivity to surrounding conditions such as brightness and floor characteristics although vision is the most powerful robotic sensing capability. In this paper, a vision-based robust path line detection technique is proposed for the navigation of a mobile robot assuming uncontrollable surrounding conditions. The technique proposed has four processing steps; color space transformation, pixel-level line sensing, block-level line sensing, and robot navigation control. This technique effectively uses hue and saturation color values in the line sensing so to be insensitive to the brightness variation. Line finding in block-level makes not only the technique immune from the error of line pixel detection but also the robot control easy. The proposed technique was tested with a real mobile robot and proved its effectiveness.

  • In this paper, a wide dynamic range active pixel sensor(APS) with output voltage feedback structure has been designed by a 2-poly 4-metal 0.35 $\mu$m standard CMOS technology. We presented a novel APS with output voltage feedback, which exhibits a wide dynamic range. The dynamic range increases at the cost of an additional diode and an additional MOSFET. The output voltage feedback structure enables the control of the output voltage level by itself, as incident light power varies. It is confirmed that the light level which the output voltage level of proposed APS is saturated is about 120,000 lux, which is higher than that of a conventional 3-transistor APS.

  • Edge in the image includes the size, direction and location of objects. The existing detection methods for detecting this edge is a method using Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts and Laplacian, etc. These existing methods use a fixed weighted mask in order to detect the edge and have somewhat insufficient edge detection characteristics. Therefore in this paper, an algorithm that detects the edge by applying the grey level converting function according to the pixel distribution of local mask was proposed.

  • Edge detection is an essential preprocessing for most image processing application, and there are several existing detection methods such as Sobel, Roberts, Laplacian, LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) operators, etc. Those existing edge detection methods have not given satisfactory results since they do not offer enough pixel brightness change in low light level environment. Therefore, in this study new algorithms using brightness transfer function in the preprocessing and for edge detection applying standard deviation and average-weighted local masks are proposed. In addition, the performance of proposed algorithms was evaluated in comparison with the existing edge detection methods such as Sobel, Roberts, Prewitt, Laplacian, LoG operators.

  • The demand for high-resolution images is gradually increasing, whereas many imaging systems have been designed to allow a certain level of aliasing during image acquisition. Thus, digital image processing approaches have recently been investigated to reconstruct a high-resolution image from aliased low-resolution images. However, since the sub-pixel motion information is assumed to be accurate in most conventional approaches, the satisfactory high-resolution image cannot be obtained when the sub-pixel motion information is inaccurate. Therefore, in this paper we propose a new algorithm to reduce the distortion in the reconstructed high-resolution image due to the inaccuracy of sub-pixel motion information. For this purpose, we analyze the effect of inaccurate sub-pixel motion information on a high-resolution image reconstruction, and model it as zero-mean additive Gaussian errors added respectively to each low-resolution image. To reduce the distortion we apply the modified multi-channel image deconvolution approach to the problem. The validity of the proposed algorithm is both theoretically and experimentally demonstrated in this paper.
