Study on Unsteady Wake Behavior Behind Oscillating Flat Plates (진동하는 평판에서 발생하는 비정상 후류형상연구)

  • The fluid propulsion mechanism of two oscillating flat plates is studied numerically using a discrete vortex method. Presently, the flat plates are assumed to be rigid. To analyze the closely coupled aerodynamic interference between the flat plates, a core addition scheme and a vortex core model are combined together. A calculated wake pattern for a flat plate in heaving oscillation motion is compared with the flow visualization. The effect of wake shapes on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flat plate in pitching oscillation is investigated. The velocity profiles behind the flat plates in pitching oscillations are plotted to investigate the possible thrust generation mechanism.

  • Throwing motion divided by 6 phases such as wind-up, (early and late) cocking, acceleration, deceleration, follow-through. Overuse injuries in baseball result most often from pitching. Poor mechanics is the leading cause of arm injuries. The purpose of this article is to analyze the each joint motion and evaluate the biomechanics and pathomechanics during pitching.

  • In the design of high speed fishing vessel, its hull form has to be decided from a view point of resistance and propulsion performance without negelction of seakeeping characteristics. In spite of many efforts, the performance improvement by hull form itself has its limitations, specially for high speed craft. In this paper, the development of performance of resistance and seakeeping improving appendage for high speed planing hull on behalft of the hull form of fishing vessel has been introduced. The developed appendage verified its effectiveness in the full scale test.

Pitching grade index in Korean pro-baseball (한국프로야구에서의 투수평가지표)

  • In baseball, the traditional measure of pitchers are wins and ERA. But these statistics are influenced by luck or team power. So sabermetrician proposes a number of indicators that predict future performance. We determine a new measure, which we call pitching grade index (PGI) that efficiently summarizes a pitcher's performance on a numerical scale using principal components analysis. The PGI statistic can often be useful to assessing a pitcher's individual contribution. Also K-means clustering algorithm are used for segmentation of players into groups.

  • A kart is a vehicle without the suspension system and the differential gear. The kart frame as an elastic body plays the role of a spring. By the cornering of a kart, rolling, pitching and twisting motions are induced in the kart frame. Also the slip or noncontact of the wheel and a permanent deformation of the kart frame can be induced. In order to examine closely this phenomenon, measurement on height-displacements with various sensors and tracking system and analysis on the kart frame twisting characteristics with the rolling and pitching angle are needed. According to the measurement result, while driving in a curve at high speed the kart frame is quite twisted. Analysis on the measurement results shows that a kart used primarily in high speed requires a frame with low torsional stiffness and a frame material with high tensile strength and large elongation.

On the limit cycles of aeroelastic systems with quadratic nonlinearities

  • Limit cycle oscillations of a two-dimensional airfoil with quadratic and cubic pitching nonlinearities are investigated. The equivalent stiffness of the pitching stiffness is obtained by combining the linearization and harmonic balance method. With the equivalent stiffness, the equivalent linearization method for nonlinear flutter analysis is generalized to address aeroelastic system with quadratic nonlinearity. Numerical example shows that good approximation of the limit cycle can be obtained by the generalized method. Furthermore, the proposed method is capable of revealing the unsymmetry of the limit cycle; however the ordinary equivalent linearization method fails to do so.

  • A two-dimensional airfoil flying over a wavy wall is calculated by solving the unsteady Euler equation. Unsteady Transonic flow over an NACA00012 airfoil in pitching motion has been computed for code validation. Some numerical results for NACA6409 airfoil under different wave number, wave length, fly height are presented. The numerical results show the variation of lift and pitching moment coefficients are increased as wave length decrease.

  • This paper compared the seakeeping quality of U, V type ships in infinite depth by using the finite element method. From the calculated results, it is found that heaving and pitching motions of V type are comparatively better than those of U type ship in the water of infinite depth and the reversed phenomenon occures in the water of finite depth. And the seakeeping quality of U type is better than V type ship in larger ranges than the nondimensional wave number 2.0.

  • The effort identifying positioning information of the moving object in real time has been a issue not only in sport biomechanics but also other academic areas. In order to solve this issue, this study tried to track the movement of a pitched ball that might provide an easier prediction because of a clear focus and simple movement of the object. Machine learning has been leading the research of extracting information from continuous images such as object tracking. Though the rule-based methods in artificial intelligence prevailed for decades, it has evolved into the methods of statistical approach that finds the maximum a posterior location in the image. The development of machine learning, accompanied by the development of recording technology and computational power of computer, made it possible to extract the trajectory of pitched baseball from recorded images. We present a method of baseball tracking, based on object tracking methods in machine learning. We introduce three state-of-the-art researches regarding the object tracking and show how we can combine these researches to yield a novel engine that finds trajectory from continuous pitching images. The first research is about mean shift method which finds the mode of a supposed continuous distribution from a set of data. The second research is about the research that explains how we can find the mode and object region effectively when we are given the previous image's location of object and the region. The third is about the research of representing data into features that we can deal with. From those features, we can establish a distribution to generate a set of data for mean shift. In this paper, we combine three works to track baseball's location in the continuous image frames. From the information of locations from two sets of images, we can reconstruct the real 3-D trajectory of pitched ball. We show how this works in real pitching images.

Design tables and charts for uniform and non-uniform tuned liquid column dampers in harmonic pitching motion

  • In the first part of the paper, the optimal design parameters for tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD) in harmonic pitching motion were investigated. The configurations in design tables include uniform and non-uniform TLCDs with cross-sectional ratios of 0.3, 0.6, 1, 2 and 3 for the design in different situations. A closed-form solution of the structural response was used for performing numerical optimization. The results from optimization indicate that the optimal structural response always occurs when the two resonant peaks along the frequency axis are equal. The optimal frequency tuning ratio, optimal head loss coefficient, the corresponding response and other useful quantities are constructed in design tables as a guideline for practitioners. As the value of the head loss coefficient is only available through experiments, in the second part of the paper, the prediction of head loss coefficients in the form of a design chart are proposed based on a series of large scale tests in pitching base motions, aiming to ease the predicament of lacking the information of head loss for those who wishes to make designs without going through experimentation. A large extent of TLCDs with cross-sectional ratios of 0.3, 0.6, 1, 2 and 3 and orifice blocking ratios ranging from 0%, 20%, 40%, 60% to 80% were inspected by means of a closed-form solution under harmonic base motion for identification. For the convenience of practical use, the corresponding empirical formulas for predicting head loss coefficients of TLCDs in relation to the cross-sectional ratio and the orifice blocking ratio were also proposed. For supplemental information to horizontal base motion, the relation of head loss values versus blocking ratios and the corresponding empirical formulas were also presented in the end.
