  • The pitch searching is a vital process in a vocoder. Generally, the method of pitch searching is employed after highlighting the periodicity, where a correlation is identified with the signal by changing the interval of two pulses. When the correlation value reaches the peak, the pitch can be found by the pulse interval because it is the repetition interval with most striking period. However if the identified period happens to be one of half period, double period or triple period, this cannot be considered as the pitch period. Many methods were suggested to solve this problem. An inaccurate pitch could be obtained as well, when there is an interval where signal amplitude is not constant but varies abruptly in the frame. To solve this matter, searching the pitch by dividing a frame into various subframes is adopted, but too much calculation has to be followed while it leads the correct value. This paper suggests an algorithm to resolve these two problems. First, to search the pitch after advance correction of the signal energy level with an estimated overall energy change ratio in the frame before pitch search to reduce half period, double period and triple period is suggested. Second, to vary the number of subframes by predicting the amplitude change rate in the frame by the energy ratio obtained by the above-mentioned method is advised. If these two methods are applied, the pitch searching time can be reduced and the general pitch searching performance can be improved without affecting the sound quality in the synthesized signal.

  • This paper presents a new music identification method using probabilistic and dynamic characteristics of melody. The propo3ed method uses pitch and MFCC parameters as feature vectors for the characteristics of music notes and represents melody pattern by pitch histogram and temporal sequence of codeword indices. We also propose a new pattern matching method for the hybrid method. We have tested the proposed algorithm in small (drama OST) and broad (1.005 popular songs) search spaces. The experimental results on search areas of OST and 1,005 popular songs showed better performance of the proposed method over conventional methods. We achieved the performance improvement of average $9.9\%$ and $10.2\%$ in error reduction rate on each search area.

  • Code Excited Linear Prediction(CELP) speech coders exhibit good performance at data rates below 4.8 kbps. This major drawback of CELP type coders is required much computation. In this paper, we propose a new pitch search method that preserves the quality of the CELP vocoder with reducing complexity. In the pitch searching, we detect the segments of high correlation by a simple preprocessing, and then carry out the pitch searching only for the segments obtained by the preprocessing. By using the proposed method, we can get approximately $77\%$ complexity reduction in the pitch search.

  • Code Excited Linear Prediction(CELP) vocoder exhibits good performance at data rates below 4.8 kbps. The major drawback to CELP type coders is their large amount of computation. In this paper, we propose a new pitch search method that preserves the quality of the CELP vocoder with reduced complexity. The basic idea is to restrict the pitch searching range by estimating the preliminary pitches. Applying the proposed method to the CELP vocoder, we can get approximately 87% complexity reduction in the pitch search.

  • Code excited linear prediction speech coders exhibit good performance at data rates as low as 4800bps. But the major drawback to CELP type coders is their large computational requirements. Therefore, in this paper a comparative performance study of three pitch searching algorithms for the CELP vocoder was conducted. For each of the algorithms, a standard pitch searching algorithm was used by the full pitch searching algorithm that was implimented in the QCELP vocoder. The algorithms used in this study is to reduce the pitch searching time 1) using the skip table, 2) using the symmetrical property of the autocorrelation , and 3) using the preprocessing autocorrelation, 4) using the positive autocorrelation, 5) using the preliminary pitch. Performance scores are presented for each of the five pitch searching algorithms based on computation speed and on pitch prediction error.

  • IMBE(Improved Multi-Band Excitation) vocoders exhibit good performance at low data rates. The major drawback to IMBE coders is their large computational requirements. In this paper, thus, we propose a new pitch search method that preserves the quality of the IMBE vocoder with reduced complexity. The basic idea is to skip unnecessary range of the pitch searching by using the quantization error. Applying the proposed method to the IMBE vocoder, we can get approximately $45.88\%$ processing time reduction and there is no difference in voice quality between conventional IMBE and proposed IMBE.

  • Recently, the horizontal axis rotor performance optimizer (HARP_Opt) tool was developed in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA. This innovative tool is becoming more popular in the wind turbine industry and in the field of academic research. HARP_Optwas developed on the basis of two fundamental modules, namely, WT_Perf, a performance evaluator computer code using the blade element momentum theory; and a genetic algorithm module, which is used as an optimizer. A pattern search algorithm was more recently incorporated to enhance the optimization capability, especially the calculation time and consistency of the solutions. The blade optimization is an aspect that is highly dependent on experience and requires significant consideration on rotor control strategies, wind data, and generator type. In this study, the effects of rotor control strategies including fixed speed and fixed pitch, variable speed and fixed pitch, fixed speed and variable pitch, and variable speed and variable pitch algorithms on optimal blade shapes and rotor performance are investigated using optimized blade designs. The effects of environmental wind data and the objective functions used for optimization are also quantitatively evaluated using the HARP_Opt tool. Performance indices such as annual energy production, thrust, torque, and roof-flap moment forces are compared.
