  • The influence of MWCNTs on fracture toughness properties of MWCNTs/Nickel-Pitch Fibers/epoxy composites (MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy) was investigated according to MWCNTs content. Nickel-Pitch-based carbon fibers (Ni-PFs) were prepared by electroless nickel-plating. The surface properties of Ni-PFs were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). The fracture toughness of MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy was assessed by critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$). From the results, it was found that the fracture toughness properties of MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy were enhanced with increasing MWCNTs content, whereas the value decreased above 5 wt.%. MWCNTs content. This was probably considered that the MWCNTs entangled with each other in epoxy due to an excess of MWCNTs.

  • The electrospinnability of pitch was improved by blending in a solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) resulting in the reduction of the average fiber diameter from 2000 to 750 nm. Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) derived by stabilization, carbonization and steam activation at 700, 800, and 900 ${^{\circ}C}$ of the PAN/pitch electrospun fibers for 60 min were investigated as electrodes for supercapacitors. The Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET) specific surface area ranged from 732 to 1877 $m^2g^{-1}$ and the specific capacitance from 75.5 to 143.5 $Fg^{-1}$, depending on the activation conditions. Electrodes from the electrospun web activated at 900 ${^{\circ}C}$ exhibited a particularly quick response showing a high frequency of 5.5 Hz at a phase angle of ‒$45^o$ of the impedance spectroscopy.

  • In this study, commercially available pitch-based carbon fibers of general grade were post-heat-treated using a boxtype high temperature furnace at $1800^{\circ}C$, $2000^{\circ}$, $2200^{\circ}C$, and $2400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The fundamental characteristics of each heat-treated carbon fibers were investigated in terms of chemical composition, morphology, thermal stability, X-ray diffraction, single filament tensile test, and electrical resistivity. The result showed that the fiber properties were significantly influenced by the post-heat-treatment, indicating the greater effect with increasing treatment temperature. The carbon contents, thermal stability, and tensile properties of the carbon fibers used here were further increased by the post-heat-treatment, whereas the d-spacing between graphene layers and the electrical resistivity were reduced with increasing post-heat-treatment temperature.

  • In order to discuss the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced composites with fly ash, lime, gypsum and polymer emulsion-Stylene Butadiene Rubber Latex (SBR) , experimental studies on FRC were carried out. The kinds of fiber used in FRC are PAN-dervied and Pitch-derived carbon fiver, alkali-resistance glass fiber. As a test results, the flexural strength and tougthness of fiber reinforced fly ash. lime.gypsum cement composites are remarkably increased by fiber contents ,but compressive strength of the composites are influenced by kinds of fiber more than by fiber contents. Also, addition of a polymer emulsion (SBR) to the composites decreased the bulk specific gravity, but compressive and flexural strengths, toughness of the composites are not influenced by it, are considerably improved by increasing fiber contents.

  • In order to discuss the freeze-thaw durability of FRC and mechanical properties by the fiber types of FRC, experimental studies of FRC were carried out. The kinds of fiber used which are in CFRC are PAN-based and Pitch-based carbon fiber and in GFRC are alkali-resistance glass fiber. To examine the effects of the kinds, types (continuous fiber and Tow, Belt, Cloth) and contents of fiber and matrices, the following three methods CFRC and GFRC, Air cured, Water cured and Autoclaved CFRC and GFRC were tested. According to the test results, the flexural, tensile strength and toughness of FRC were remarkably influenced by types of fiber and addition of condensed silica fume. Also, freeze-thaw resistance of FRC was considerably improved in comparision to conventional mortar.

  • Structural changes of high modulus carbon fiber by oxidation in carbon dioxide gas using SEM, TEM, and XRD have been observed. It was shown that the originally high modulus carbon fiber is composed of highly ordered graphitic crystalline area and non-crystalline area. It was observed that the La increases during the whole oxidation process. It was shown that the oxidation of high modulus carbon fiber initiates at the non-crystalline area and at the ends of fiber. The large pores developed in fiber by direction of fiber length at high temperature ($1,100^{\circ}C$), and the small pores developed on the fiber surface at low temperature ($900^{\circ}C$). In conclusion, it is found that the oxidation of the carbon fiber was progressed through the imperfection.

  • This paper was about experimental test properties by mechnical joint of CF1263/Epoxy Al honeycomb panels. In case of mechanical joint using screw, nut shall be secured over than minimize third screw pitch. In case of insert backsheet for increase of joint force, increase weight for assemble by screw pitch. In case of insert backsheet with CF1263/Epoxy, predominant save weight and minimazer of displacement by tensile weight moreover predominant strength. In case of mechanical joint by rivet, rivet of Monobolt has over-hole in hole of CF1263/Epoxy but rivet of PROTRUDING has predominant of mechanical joint.

  • High modulus pitch based carbon fibers (HM) were exposed to isothermal oxidation using tube furnace in carbon dioxide gas to study the oxidation kinetics under the temperature of $800-1100^{\circ}C$. The kinetic equation $f=1-{\exp}(-at^b)$ was introduced and the constant b was obtained in the range of 1.02~1.42. The oxidation kinetics were evaluated by the reaction-controlling regime (RCR) depending upon the apparent activation energies with the conversion increasing from 0.2 to 0.8. The activation energies decrease from 24.7 to 21.0 kcal/mole with the conversion increasing from 0.2 to 0.8, respectively. According to the RCR, the reaction was limited by more diffusion controlling regime for the HM fibers with the conversion increasing. Therefore, it seems that the oxidation which is under the diffusion controlling regime takes place continuously from the skin to the core of the fiber.

  • Activated carbon fibers were prepared from the petroleum isotropic pitch and organometallic compounds. The metalsvwere dispersed uniformly in the ACFs. The specific surface area and pore size distributions of metal containing ACFsvwere measured. The mesopores of ACFs were developed by Co, Ni, and Mn metals addition and the catalytic reactivityvof ACFs'SOx removal was increased by adding Ni and Pd metals. It was found that the mesopores did not work forvthe improvement of catalytic reactivity of ACFs' SOx removal with the blank experiment using the metal removedvACFs.

  • In order to discuss the engineering properties of carbon fiber reinforced cement composites with silica fume and silica powder, experimental studies in the CFRC were carried out. The types of fiber used which are in CFRC are PAN-based carbon fiber and Pitch-based carbon fiber. To examine the effects of types, lengths, contents of carbon fiber and matrices, their properties of fresh and fardened CFRC were tested. According to the test results, the process technology of light-weight CFRC is developed and their potimum mix proportions are successfully proposed. Also, it can be concluded that the reinforcement of carbon fiber is considerably effective in improving tensile strenghth, flexural strength, toughness and loss of shrinkage of CFRC compared with conventional mortar.
