Development of Aluminium Alloy for Piston of Air Compressor (공기 압축기의 피스톤용 알루미늄 합금 소재 개발)

  • It is important not only to reduce the casting defects of piston but also to improvement in the mechanical properties(hardness) of piston for the air compressor. The blow hole is typical casting defects in the conventional cast of aluminium alloy(AC8A-T6) piston. Because of the heat treatment method, mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy for piston was decided on the heat treatment method and cycle. Therefore, we tested on the development of mechanical properties and on the casting defects of piston for the air compressor in accordance with the heat treatment and casting condition. After the heat treatment and casting was carried out as several times, and was compared with the imported piston. As a result of several investigations; microstructure, hardness and casting defects of piston was changed under the influence of the heat treatment and casting method. When the cooling rate was controlled and the uni-cast method used, it bas the same mechanical properties and microstructure.

  • Recently, the interest of the engine capacity and environment of the atmosphere is increasing, so the researches for the engine capacity have been conducted for a long time. But the internal environment of an automotive engine is very severe. A piston is exposed to combustion gas of over $2000^{\circ}C$ and strong friction is occurred by high speed motion in the cylinder. The fraction between piston and wall of the cylinder causes the increase of temperature in the engine. The temperature of the engine has an effect on the engine capacity. If the temperature is high, the capacity of the engine is low. So we have to maintain the optimum temperature. To maintain the optimum temperature, the enough flow rate of the engine oil is needed. The oil jet is used to control the flow rate of the engine oil and supply the engine oil to the piston and cylinder. The purpose of this study is to check the mass flow rate of the engine oil and the characteristics of internal flow of the oil jet. Flow pattern of the engine oil is very important because it concludes the loss in the oil jet. This study is the previous research about the oil jet and we will consider the movement of the ball check valve to get more accuracy result.

  • A Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available, and uses helium as a working fluid. The FPFD stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which makes pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials). In order to evaluate the feasibility of using a linear motor driving cryocooler, prototype Stirling cryocooler with a nominal cooling capacity of 0.5W at 80K was designed, fabricated and tested. The prototype has achieved no load temperature of 51K and cooling power of 0.33W.

  • In the design of the split type free displacer Stilting cryocooler the motion of the displacer is very important to decide the cooling capacity, which depends upon the working gas pressure, the swept volume in the compression space and the expansion space, operating frequency, the phase shift between piston and displacer, etc. In this study, Stirling cryocooler actuated by the electric farce of the dual linear motor is designed and manufactured. Cool down characteristics of the cold end with laser displacement sensor in the expander of the Stilting cryocooler is evaluated. The charging pressure was 15kg$_{f}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and operating frequency was 50Hz. Input power and the lowest temperature were about 32W and 67K, respectively. And, displacement of the piston is measured by LVDTs (Linear Variable Differential Transformers), displacement of thedisplacer is measured by laser optic method, and phase shift between piston and displacer is discussed. As the peak-to-peak pressure of the compressor was increased, peak-to-peak displacement of the displacer was increased. The peak-to-peak displacement of the displacer increases in the range of 0 - 64.5Hz(resonant frequency of the displacer), but decreases steeply when the operating frequency is bigger than the resonant frequency. Finally when the phase shift between displacements of the Piston and displacer is 45。, operating frequency is optimum and is decided by resonant frequency of the expander, mass and cross section area of the displacer and constant by friction and flow resistance.e.

An Experimental Study on the Cylinder Wall Temperature Characteristics for Load Variations in a Gasoline Engine (가솔린엔진의 부하(負荷)에 따른 실린더 벽면 온도특성(溫度特性)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study is to prevent the stick, scuffing, scratch between piston and cylinder, is to contribute the piston design such as piston profile, clearance by calculating reaction force by over-lap of piston skirt, as measuring the temperature distributions of cylinder wall. The experiment has been peformed to obtain data during actual engine operation. Temperature gradient in peripheral and axial distributions of cylinder wall according to torque and speed of engine were measured by use of an 800cc class gasoline engine. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1) The temperature of cylinder wall at TDC was about $50{\sim}75^{\circ}C$ higher than temperature of cooling water. 2) The rear side temperature of top dead center was $141^{\circ}C$(1/4 load) in axial distribution, whereas the rear side of midway position temperature was $98^{\circ}C$. 3) The temperature of cylinder wall increased in according to rising temperature of cooling water. 4) The thrust side temperature of cylinder wall was about $15^{\circ}C$ in all load test. 5) The rear side temperature of top dead center was $159^{\circ}C$ (1/2 load) in peripheral distribution, it was about $39^{\circ}C$ higher than thrust side temperature.

The influence of various factors on piston friction (피스턴마찰에 미치는 각 인자의 영향)

  • There exist many kinds of frictions in internal combustion engine such as piston ring and skirt, cam and tappet, bearing friction etc. Among them, the frictions between piston ring, skirt and cylinder are particular. These frictions for motoring test are differ from that of firing test even though the temperature of cooling water and lubricating oil keep identically. The frictions for firing test are increased due to combustion pressure and products. The precise calculation of the friction is difficult. But we can assume that the friction is governed by the viscosity of lubricating oil and gas pressure of cylinder. And the viscosity of lubricating oil is dependant on gas temperature of cylinder, so the piston friction may be governed by gas pressure and temperature of cylinder. In this treatise, we propose the method of evaluating piston friction under the condition of constant engine speed, and we analyzed the behaviours and influence of factors concerned with the piston friction for output correction when the inlet pressure and temperature were varied. The main results are as follows: 1) The behaviours on the inlet conditions for the contact force of the piston rings and the viscosity of the lubricating oil concerned with piston friction are found. 2) The essential point the these behaviours is dependant on the cyclic variation following to the inlet conditions. 3) According to our analysis, It was observed that the viscosity of lubricating oil is more effective than the contact force to the piston rings.

  • In order to enhance the performance of an automotive engine, many researchers have been carried out. An oil jet cooling a piston is one of important parts for engine performance. Therefore, the efficient cooling system of an oil jet is needed. In this paper, unsteady flow analysis of the oil jet which consists of a check valve and a nozzle has been accomplished. And the reaction between mass flow rate and ball movement was also investigated.

  • A composite piston with a crown made of steel and a skirt made of NCI is used in a marine diesel engine, which has a maximum firing pressure of over 180 bar and a high thermal load. In the fatigue design of the composite piston, the fatigue is influenced by factors such as the load type, surface roughness, and temperature; further, the distribution ratio of the firing force from the crown to the skirt is important for optimizing the design of the crown and skirt. In this study, the stress gradient method was used to consider the effect of the load type. The temperature field on the piston was predicted by cocktail-shaking cooling analysis, and influence of high temperature on fatigue strength was investigated. The load transfer ratio and contact pressure were optimized by design of the surface shape and accurate tolerance analysis. Finally, the cooling performance and durability design of the composite piston were verified by performing a long-term prototype test.

  • The convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of a large liquid petroleum liquid injection(LPLi) engine piston with the oil gallery are analyzed by solving an inverse thermal conduction problem. The heat transfer coefficients are numerically found so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. Using the resulting heat transfer coefficients as the boundary condition, temperature of a large LPLi engine piston is analyzed. With varying cooling water temperature, temperature, stress, and thermal expansion of the piston are analyzed and evaluated.

  • In this paper, a linear motor piston amplitude estimator using phase lag filter has been implemented. In order to control the cooling capability of a refrigerator or an air conditioner in which liner compressors are applied, the piston speed should be controlled. The piston speed control can be obtained by adjusting the frequency or the stroke of linear motors. The dynamic performance of linear compressors depends on how accurately the stroke or the piston amplitude is estimated. A linear motor piston amplitude estimator using phase lag filter is proposed and the superior performance of our estimator is verified via some simulation studies.
