  • For the first time, a single specimen (68.47 mm in total length) of Lumpenopsis pavlenkoi Soldatov, 1916 belonging to the family Stichaeidae was collected from the northernmost area of the eastern coast of Korea (Gosung, Gangwon Province) in April, 2020, using square net (1.0 m width, 0.3 m height, 2.0 mm mesh size). This species is characterized by elongated and compressed body, absence of lateral line and cirri on head, presence of scales on cheek, dorsal fin with only 50 spines, anal fin with 2 spines and 30 soft rays, and separated operculum and isthmus. The body is yellowish with 7 saddles. The new Korean name "Kko-ma-be-do-ra-chi-sog" is proposed for the genus Lumpenopsis, and "Deung-jeom-kko-ma-be-do-ra-chi" is proposed for the species L. pavlenkoi.

  • A single specimen of Chaetodon vagabundus Linnaeus, 1758 belonging to the family Chaetodontidae was collected on September 8, 2013 in Yerae-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Island, Korea. The morphological characteristics of C. vagabundus are similar to C. auriga and C. auripes in having dark vertical stripes cross the eye, but differs from C. auriga, which has high dorsal fin extended between spine and soft rays without concavity and has blotch of circle in dorsal fin, and from C. auripes which has yellow body, big of eye proportion and a black stripe along the caudal peduncle during the immature stage. C. vagabundus has eye-like black spots on dorsal fin and black vertical stripe extended from the anterior dorsal soft ray to the middle of the anal fin along the caudal peduncle. Molecular analysis results showed that our specimen perfectly matched C. vagabundus in the mitochondrial DNA COI sequences. Therefore, we use the Korean name, "Hwang-jul-na-bi-go-gi" for C. vagabundus proposed by Kim et al. (2020).

  • This study was carried out to observe the development of the autonomous skeletal development of the Favonigobius gymnauchen. Total length (TL) of larvae 3 days after hatching (DAH) were mean TL of 3.34 mm, with a line-shaped parasphenoid ossification in the cranium and basioccipital ossification in the back. The 10 DAH larvae had a mean TL of 5.20 mm, with the number of caudal vertebrae increasing to 15. The urostyle and two hypural bones in the lower part also began to ossify. The 23 DAH juveniles had a mean TL of 8.47 mm. The pectoral girdle's skeleton was completed as the scapula and coracoid were ossified. The pelvic girdle also fully supported the ventral fin as its ossification was completed. Favonigobius gymnauchen and Tridentiger obscurus showed similar characteristics in terms of the anus location of hatched larvae, number of myotomes, and melanophore distribution during the morphological development of the larvae and juveniles. However, this study confirmed differences in the development of the vertebrae and urostyle bone.

  • On November 9, 2022, a goatfish (Mullidae) that had not been previously reported in Korea was collected during offshore fisheries resources research near Jeju Island. Based on the morphological identification, this goatfish was identified as the genus Upeneus owing to the presence of palatine teeth and vomerine teeth, as well as the proximal part of anterior part of second dorsal fin. Additionally, through molecular identification, the previously unreported goatfish was identified as U. subvittatus with a 99.8% match in the mtDNA COI region. Goatfish U. subvittatus has no patterns on its body and dark bands on both the lower and upper caudal fins, making it well distinguishable from the four species of genus Upeneus reported in Korea. U. vittatus, reported in Japan, showed morphological differences from U. subvittatus in that the dark band on the lower lobe of the caudal fin was wider, and longitudinal stripes were present on the body. Based on the morphological characteristics of U. subvittatus, we suggest a new Korean name, "Jul-mu-nui-kko-li-chog-su".

  • The diet composition of the whitespotted conger Conger myriaster was analyzed using 1,047 specimens collected from the coastal waters of the South Sea of Korea. Specimens sizes ranged from 11.4 to 46.8 cm in anal length. C. myriaster mainly fed on Engraulis japonicus (Pisces index of relative importance 82.1%). The dietary composition of C. myriaster did not differ significantly across size classes. As the body size of C. myriaster increased the mean weight of prey within the stomach (mW/ST) also increased (one-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

  • The olfactory anatomy and histology of Lethenteron reissneri were researched using a stereo microscope, a light microscope, and a scanning electron microscope. As in other lampreys, it shows same characters as follows: i) a single olfactory organ, ii) a single tubular nostril, iii) a single olfactory chamber with gourd-like form, iv) a nasal valve, v) a nasopharyngeal pouch, vi) a sensory epithelium (SE) of continuous distribution, vii) a supporting cells with numerous long cilia, viii) an accessory olfactory organ. However, the description of a pseudostratified columnar layer in the SE and Non SE is a first record, not reported in sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus. In particular, both 19 to 20 lamellae in number and olfactory receptor neuron's quarter ciliary length of the knob diameter differ from those of P. marinus. From these results, it might be considered that the olfactory organ of L. reissneri shows well adaptive structure of a primitive fish to slow flowing water with gravel, pebbles, and sand and a hiding habit into sand bottom at daytime. The lamellar number and neuron's ciliary length may be a meaningful taxonomic character for the class Petromyzonida.

  • Twenty four species belonging to 10 genera and 4 families in the suborder Tetraodontoidei in Korea were reviewed and provisional keys to species, genera and families are provided. Among them available specimens of seventeen species in this taxa collected during 1986 to 1990 from Korean waters were examined and recorded on the morphometric characters, their body color and collection sites. And two species are reported for the first time to Korea with their descriptions and figures : Lagocephallus gloveri Abe et Tabeta, 1983 and L. wheeleri Abe,Tabeta et Kitahama, 1984. Taki/ugu chiηensis Abe, previously recorded from Pusan, Korea as paratype locality but not included in the list of Chyung, 1977, is listed in the present paper with the new korean name, "Chambok". Many of this taxa are also distributed throughout the waters of China and Japan. But it is found that the distribution of three species of genus Takifugu are restricted only to the west coast of Korea as well as to the adjacent waters of China in the Yellow Sea ; T. obscurus, T. flavidus and T. basilevskianus. Taxonomy and distribution of this taxa were discussed with references to the information obtained so far.

  • During an artificial breeding as a part of restoration of the endangered Korean bitterling Acheilognathus signifer, a small number of individuals exhibiting oculocutaneous albinism were produced. We compared the pigmentation and morphology of normal and albinic bitterlings by histological examination of skin samples obtained from 10 regions on the body, fins, and eyes. There were no differences in morphometry and in general morphology of skin between them. In normal bitterlings, pigment cells were better developed in the dorsal region, the upper part of caudal peduncle region, the choroid-retinal epithelium and iris than in other areas. In the albinic bitterling, however, pigment cells were present only in three parts of the dorsal region, the caudal and dorsal fin, which had few melanin cells. Albinic bitterlings also displayed deficient pigmentation in the choroid-retina pigment epithelium and iris. Although they had different pigmentation aspects in distribution and development between normal and albinic bitterlings, melanin cells were mainly present in the dorsal regions of the skin and eyes where are exposed directly to light.

  • To observe the respiratory system in relation to the air-breathing organ in Iksookimia longicorpa, micro-anatomical investigation was performed on the epidermis and on intestinal tract fragments. The epidermis was distinguished by two types of skin glands, a small mucous cell and a large club cell. The mucous cell was acid sulfomucins (some sialomucins), but the club cell did not give any histochemical tests for mucosubstances. The presence of a well defined lymphatic system with small lymphocytes was established in the stratum germinativum layer of the epidermis. A large number of blood capillaries run very close to each other just below the basement membrane. The straight intestinal tract is divided into an intestine and rectum, which consisted of a mucosa (epithelial layer), lamina propria-submucosa, muscularis, and serosa. The intestine and rectum have shorter mucosal folds and a thinner wall. The majority of the epithelial mucous cells contain acid sulfomucines. Based on the above results, I. longicorpa adapts to poor dissolved oxygen conditions by using an additional respiratory system using air through the epidermis, not the intestines.

  • Thirty six species belonging to 21 genera in the family Cottidae from Korea are reviewed and provisional keys to species and genera are provided. Synonyms based on Korean references are included for all cottid fishes of korea, and their taxonomic positions and distribution are discussed. Specimens of twenty one species of this family were collected by trawlers from 38 localities during 1989 to 1992. Five cottid species are recorded for the first time in Korea : They are Triglops jordani(Schmidt), Myoxocephalus stelleri Tilesius, Taurocottus bergi Solatov et Pavlenko, Icelus ochotensis Schmidt and Pseudoblennius zonostigma Jordan et Starks. It is noticeable that most cottid fishes of Korea except 3 species are distributed along the northeastern coast at the southern extremity of cold current from the Okhotsk Sea.
