  • The LBB behavior and the crack opening displacement after a crack penetrated wall thickness of statically indeterminate piping system were investigated in this study, compared with statically determinate piping system. The reduction of ultimate strength caused by a crack was relatively small in the statically indeterminate piping system. The statically indeterminate piping system has more safety margin for LBB behavior than the statically determinate piping system. The crack opening displacement could be evaluated by using the plastic rotation angle proposed to evaluate the crack opening displacement after crack penetration in pipe with a non-penetrating crack.

  • High temperature steam pipes of thermal power plant are subject to a severe thermal range and usually operates well into the creep range. Cyclic operation of the plant subjects the piping system to mechanical and thermal fatigue damages. Also, poor or malfunctional supports can impose massive loads or stress onto the piping system. In order to prevent the serious damage and failure of the critical piping system, various inspection methods such as visual inspection, computational analysis and on-line piping displacement monitoring were developed. 3-dimensional piping displacement monitoring system was developed with using the aluminum alloy rod and rotary encoder sensors, this system was installed and operated on the high temperature steam piping of "Y" thermal power plant successfully. It is expected that this study will contribute to the safety of piping system, which could minimize stress and extend the actual life of critical piping.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effects of both seismic loading and crack length on the fracture behavior of piping system with a circumferential crack in nuclear power plants. The experiments were performed using both large scale piping system facility and 4 points bending test machine under PWR operating conditions. The difference in the load carrying capacities between cracked piping and non-cracked piping was also investigated using the results from experiments and numerical calculations. The results obtained from the experiments and estimation are as follows : (1) The safety margin under seismic loading is larger than those under quasi static loading or simple cyclic loading. (2) There was no significant effect of crack length on tincture behavior of piping system with both a surface crack and a through-wall crack. (3) The load carrying capacity in cracked piping was reduced by factors of 7 to 46 compared to non-cracked piping.

  • There was transient vibration on the piping system from #4 heater to the deaerator in a power plant. We found it was resulted from resonance between the natural vibration of the piping system and vibration induced by flow of feedwater. We verified it would reduce vibration by increasing stiffness of the piping system. Therefore we concluded that it would be generally better to increase stiffness of the piping system to reduce vibration amplitude of 10Hz low for big sized piping systems.

  • This paper reviewed and summarized the experimental studies conducted during last three decades to evaluate the structural integrity and to establish the acceptance criteria for piping system of nuclear power plants (NPPs) under seismic loading condition. These experimental studies contain the results of large-scale piping system tests under excessive seismic loading as well as standard specimen tests, simplified piping specimen tests, and piping components tests under simplified dynamic and cyclic loading. These would be useful as a basis for establishing integrity assessment procedure and acceptance criteria for piping systems of NPPs under beyond design basis earthquake (BDBE) conditions, and also could be used in planing the scope and direction of further related researches.

  • This paper describes flow characteristics in a piping system having various duct shapes on refuse collecting system. A simulator for the refuse collecting system is designed to analyze the flow characteristics in the piping system. The simulator consists of an air intake, a waste chute, circular duct having various shapes, cyclone and turbo blower. The simulator has four different duct shapes: straight, curved, inclined and Y-shaped ducts. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis is introduced to analyze the pressure loss in the piping system. Throughout the numerical simulation, pressure loss obtained by numerical simulation has a good agreement with the results of experimental measurements. The selected length of curved and Y-ducts for the pressure loss is determined using pressure distributions on the duct. Flow and pressure characteristics in the piping system of the simulator are evaluated by numerical simulation and discussed in detail.

  • Many piping systems installed in the power plant are directly related to the safety and operation of the plant. Various dampers have been applied to the piping system to reduce the damage caused by earthquakes. In order to reduce the vibration of the piping system, this study developed a steel coil damper (SCD) with a straightforward structure but excellent damping performance. SCD reduces the vibration of the objective structure by hysteretic damping. The new SCD damper can be applied to high-temperature environments since it consists of steel members. The paper introduces a design method for the elastoplastic coil spring, which is the critical element of SCD. The practical applicability of the design procedure was validated by comparing the nonlinear force-displacement curves calculated by design equations with the results obtained from nonlinear finite element analysis and repeated loading test. It was found that the designed SCD's have a damping ratio higher than 25%. In addition, this study performed a set of seismic tests using a shaking table with an existing piping system to verify the vibration control capacity on the piping system by SCD. Test results prove that the SCD can effectively control the displacement vibration of the piping system up to 80%.

  • A numerical analysis has been perfonned to estimate the effect of turbulent penetration and thermal stratified flow in the branch lines piping. This phenomenon of thermal stratification are usually observed in the piping lines of the safety related systems and may be identified as the source of fatigue in the piping system due to the thermal stress loading which are associated with plant operating modes. The turbulent penetration length reaches to $1^{st}$ valve in safety injection piping from reactor coolant system (RCS) at normal operation for nuclear power plant when a coolant does not leak out through valve. At the time, therefore, the thermal stratification does not appear in the piping between RCS piping and $1^{st}$ valve of safety injection piping. When a coolant leak out through the $1^{st}$ valve by any damage, however, the thermal stratification can occur in the safety injection piping. At that time, the maximum temperature difference of fluid between top and bottom in the piping is estimated about $50^{\circ}C$.

  • Numerical analysis is carried out to assess the temperature distribution on the mixing tee line of Residual Heat Removal System (RHRS). In RHRS, hot and cold fluids of main and bypass piping are mixed and unmixed by the flow rate or piping layout. Thermal stratification phenomenon is a cause of major degradation on RHRS piping. According to the analysis for each operation modes, maximum temperature difference between top and bottom of piping were evaluated about 60K when the flow rate of main and bypass lines is same. Temperature difference will be decreased at the elbow on RHRS piping if the length of vertical piping is increased.

  • Domestic power plants have consistently been developed over the years in industrially developed nations with high standards of living. Considering the power plant development strategy, design efficiency is of upmost importance. Therefore, an improper design directly affects the power plant's risk management plan and the potential risks of the piping system. Therefore, in this study, research is intended to be carried out to allow efficient power plant operation, through optimization of the design of the piping system. The purpose of the study is to confirm economic feasibility by changing the piping loop design, expanding the length of pipe loops, and to investigate the thermal stress influence on the piping system through simulations of systems similar in condition to those currently used in existing plants in Korea.
