In this study, API-X100 steel pipes were welded with various kinds of welding wires in the laser-arc hybrid welding process. 10kW fiber laser source was combined to MIG arc welding process. API X-100 steel of base metal was of 16.9mm thickness, and butt welding applied. After welding, full penetration weld was acquired by 1-pass welding. A root porosity and the lack of fusion was observed in some welding conditions. By the mixing the melted wire, acicular ferrite, polygonal ferrite, pro-eutectoid, aligned side plate, and bainite structures were observed at the weld metal. From the observation of hybrid weld, unmixed zone had more Ni and Cr. The unmixed zone was a 1/3 area of the weld metal. As the mechanical test of the hybrid welding, tensile test and impact test applied. From the tensile test, all of the welding except SM70S was fractured at the base metal. The result of the impact test at -30 degree C led 60J~320J of the absorbed energy. The result of the low-absorbed energy might be from the coarse equiaxed structures of the weld metal.
API(American Petroleum Institute) steel, as a line pipe material, requires the enhanced mechanical and chemical properties with the environmental severity. Especially, the weld part(weld metal and heat affected zone) is an important region for the safety. However, the study for the behavior of microstructure and toughness in multi-pass welding is seldom. In this study, the relationship between the microstructure and toughness of welds with several welding, bending and heat-treatment conditions was examined. In particular, HIC property in the weld metal was evaluated. The microstructure and toughness in multi-passed HAZ seemed to be determined by the final welding thermal cycle and the low toughness was attributed to the MA constituents formed in the intercritically reheated region. The weld metal showed very low toughness and it was not improved by the change in bending and heat treatment conditions. Additionally, the cracks are observed in the weld metal. from these results, it was found that the choice of welding wire/flux is very important.
Large steel water pipes are joined prevalently by the bell end method, and are welded both at inside and outside of lapped parts. In practice, welded joints of water pipes are very critical, because in most cases failure of pipes causing leakage occurs at the welded joint. Therefore some methods have been developed to ensure the soundness of welded joints of water pipes, like leakage tests and nondestructive tests (NDTs). But one of the major characteristics that affects the soundness of welded Joints is the stress distribution caused by welding and external forces. Some studies have been carried out on the residual stress of steel water popes, but complex stress distributions by welding and external forces are rarely studied. In this study, temperature and stress distributions in steel water pipes produced by welding are predicted by a three-dimensional finite element method(FEM). Also, stress values are measured from real steel water pipes by the hole-drilling methods, and compared with predicted ones. The influence of some typical post weld treatments on residual stress distribution was also investigated by residual stress measurements.
MIAB welding method uses a rotating arc as its heat source and is known to be efficient in pipe butt welding. The arc is rotated around the weld line by the electro-magnetic force resulting from the interaction of arc current and magnetic field. This paper is concerned with the experiment of initial stage for process control, monitoring for weld quality, and the design of coil system which is efficient of flux generation and concentration. A coil system for the generation of magnetic flux was designed and constructed. Magnetic flux density and arc rotating behavior are important factors in MIAB welding, so the relations between these factors and process parameters were investigated. Various experiments were performed for the steel pipes(48.1mm O.D and 2.0mm thickness). The magnetic flux density is increased by increasing exciting current and decreasing gap size. The maximum of arc rotating frequency is affected by exciting current and gap size. However, the variations of arc rotating frequency during welding and then the melting process are mainly influenced by welding current. Thus, it is considered that the results of this study can be used as important data on the monitoring for weld quality and the design of efficient coil system.
Recently, automobile parts progress with modularization, which a great many allied products are modularized. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develope modular housing for modularization of steering gear. Generally, steering gear housing is composed of valve housing and rack housing, it is important to combine two housings. However, housing having the pipe shape is very sensitive to welding distortion, and welding trajectory is very complicated. In order to solve this subject, cooperative control by using robots was constructed. Further, we developed the dedicated system to suit modular housing based on it, and applied laser welding to there. Moreover, welding speed was controlled in the rapid curve section so that the defect in trajectory of housing was reduced to obtain sound weldment. Accordingly, produced housing by this way is presented enough withstanding pressure to $100kg/cm^2$, and roundness and straightness are measured about 10/100 and 0.9/100 respectively.
Significant portion of the total manufacturing time for a pipe fabrication process is spent on the welding following primary machining and fit-up processes. To achieve a reliable weld bead appearance, automatic seam tracking and adaptive control to fill the groove are urgently needed. For the seam tracking in welding processes, the vision sensors have been successfully applied. However, the adaptive filling control of the multi-torches system for the appropriate welded area has not been implemented in the area of SAW(submerged arc welding) by now. The term adaptive control is often used to describe recent advances in welding process control by strictly this only applies to a system which is able to cope with dynamic changes in system performance. In welding applications, the term adaptive control may not imply the conventional control theory definition but may be used in the more descriptive sense to explain the need for the process to adapt to the changing welding conditions. This paper proposed various types of methodologies for obtaining a good bead appearance based on multi-torches welding system with the vision system in SAW. The methodologies for adaptive filling control used welding current/voltage, arc voltage/welding current/wire feed speed combination and welding speed by using vision sensor. It was shown that the algorithm for welding current/voltage combination and welding speed revealed sound weld bead appearance compared with that of voltage/current combination.

Conventional non-destructive techniques for inspection of the weld in pipelines require significant test time and high cost. Ultrasonic guided waves have been widely studied and successfully applied to various non-destructive tests with advantage of the long-range inspection. In this paper, a study on the application of ultrasonic guided waves to the long-range inspection of the pipeline is presented using a long-range guided wave inspection system, Wavemaker SE16, GUL. The characteristics and setup of the long-range guided wave inspection system and experimental results in pipes of with various diameter are introduced. The experimental results in mock-up pipes with cluster type detects show that the minimum detectable wall thickness reduction with this guided wave system is $2\~3\%$ in the pipe cross section area. And the wall thickness reduction of $5\%$ in cross section area can be detected when actual detection level is used. Therefore, the applicability of the guided wave systeme to long-range inspection of wall thickness reduction in pipes is verified.
A probabilistic approach for evaluating failure risk is suggested in this paper. Probabilistic fracture analyses were performed for a pressurized pipe of a Cr-Mo steel reflecting variation of material properties at high temperature. A crack was assumed to be located along the weld fusion line. Probability density functions of major variables were determined by statistical analyses of material creep and creep crack growth data measured by the previous experimental studies by authors. Distributions of these variables were implemented in Monte Carlo simulation of this study. As a fracture parameter for characterizing growth of a fusion line crack between two materials with different creep properties, $C_t$ normalized with $C^*$ was employed. And the elapsed time was also normalized with tT, Resultingly, failure probability as a function of operating time was evaluated fur various cases. Conventional deterministic life assessment result was turned out to be conservative compared with that of probabilistic result. Sensitivity analysis for each input variable was conducted to understand the most influencing variable to the analysis results. Internal pressure, creep crack growth coefficient and creep coefficient were more sensitive to failure probability than other variables.
In nuclear power plants, lined carbon steel pipes or PCCPs (pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipes) have been widely used for sea water transport systems. However, de-bonding of linings and oxidation of PCCP could make problems in aged NPPs (nuclear power plants). Recently at several NPPs in the United States, the PCCPs or lined carbon steel pipes of the sea water or raw water system have been replaced with HDPE (high density polyethylene) pipes, which have outstanding resistance to oxidation and seismic loading. ASME B&PV Code committee developed Code Case N-755, which describes rules for the construction of buried Safety Class 3 polyethylene pressure piping systems. Although US NRC permitted HDPE materials for Class 3 buried piping, their permission was limited to only 10-year operation because of several concerns including the quality of fusion zone of HDPE. In this study, various requirements for fusion qualification test of HDPE and some regulatory issues raised during HDPE application review in foreign NPPs are introduced.
