  • A case study was performed in order to develop well-designed of thin plate door impact beam. The conventional impact beam was consisted of steel-pipe welded two brackets on the both side, which causes low productivity and high cost. In order to overcome those disadvantage, it is necessary to develop a new type of door impact; thin plate impact beam. The thin plate impact beam was not needed a welding procedure, which can lead low cost and high productivity. In order to maximally resist from an external force, the cross-section design should be well designed. 6 different cross-section design were proposed based on engineer's experience. Three point bending test was simulated those 6 different impact beam and compared the reaction forces. Among them, one case was chosen and redesigned for detail design.

  • The fuel oil/heat exchanger installed in military aircraft is a device that cools the lubricant oil supplied to other devices, such as an AMAD, and a hydraulic pump using the low temperature of the fuel is cracked at the AMAD lubricant inlet port. If a crack in the heat exchanger occurs, the lubricant oil supplied to other equipment is not cooled. Therefore, the flight can no longer be performed. In this study, non-destructive inspection and microscopic examination of the fracture surface of the oil port were performed to analyze the crack tendency. The oil pipe connected to the oil port is a titanium pipe, which is fastened with over torque and has been identified as the leading cause of heat exchanger oil port cracks. In addition, it was verified as the main reason for cracking by finite element analysis. The material and diameter of the pipe were changed to improve this defect, and the applied torque was adjusted. In addition, the bending value of the pipe was adjusted to minimize the fatigue accumulation due to pulsating pressure. As a result, no cracks occurred on the heat exchanger via the ground test after the installation of an improved pipe under the same conditions.

  • To analyze the influence on the stability, resulting from application of upgrade pipe roof structure (UPRS) method to the structure existed under subway Station, physical properties of a ground, elasticity and elasto-plastic theories, including displacement analysis of finite elements, stress analysis of finite elements, displacement caused by steel pipe propulsion and internal excavation, and stress change in a steel pipe, were introduced. Then, the influence on structural stability when applying the UPRS method was compared and reviewed based on the construction management standard of the Ministry Land, Infrastructure and Transport and foreign sources, using numerical analysis with a model which assumes that each microelement divided into a structurally stable point consists of the connection of finite points. As a result of the finite element analysis, 7.21 mm maximum displacement, 1/3,950 angular displacement, 70.28 MPa bending compressive stress of steel pipe structure constructed with UPRS (non-excavation) method and 477.38 MPa maximum shear strength were within their allowable standards (25.00 mm, 1/500, 210.00 MPa and 120.00 MPa, respectively), and therefore, the results showed that the design and construction are stable.

  • In this study, after carrying out a bending test that targeted the frames of plastic film greenhouse, the load-displacement relationship was analyzed to be used as basic data to develop greenhouse construction and maintenance guidelines. As a result, regardless of the shapes of the specimen, the yield and the maximum load increased as the size of the specimen increased. The displacement also showed the same pattern. A steel pipe showed lower yield and maximum load than a square pipe, and the displacement was large. In the steel pipe case, the displacement under the yield and maximum load was in the range of approximately 1.42-4.20mm and 5.80-24.13mm, respectively. In the square pipe case, the displacement under the yield and maximum load was in the range of approximately 1.62-3.00mm and 3.13-8.01mm, respectively. Further, a large difference was observed between the result of this test and the values calculated by a conventionally provided standard. In particular, not much difference was found from the result of this test in the case of a purlin member from the values provided by previous researches. However, a large difference was observed in the column or main rafter members. Furthermore, when a wide-span and venlo type, which is a glasshouse, was used as a target(h/100 and h/80), the displacement under the yield and maximum load was approximately 28.0mm and 35.0mm, respectively, which showed a large difference compared with the Netherlands standard(14.0mm) of a glasshouse. Further, in the main rafter case, a large difference was observed in the displacement limit according to the width(i.e., span) of the greenhouse where members are used. Therefore, because the displacement limit can vary depending on various factors such as type, form, and size of a greenhouse, we determined that studies or tests that consider these factors should be carried out to reflect them in the construction and maintenance of greenhouses.

  • Fracture behaviors and strength of pipes with local wall thinning are very important Jar the integrity of energy plants. In pipes of energy plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe erosion-corrosion damage. Recently, the effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system have been well studied. In this paper, the elasto-plastic analysis is performed by FE code ANSIS. We evaluated the failure mode, fracture strength and fracture behavior from FE analysis.

  • This paper presents a limit analysis of the series of construction stages of shallow tunneling method by investigating their respective safety factors and failure mechanisms. A case study for one particular cross-section of Beijing Subway Line 7 is undertaken, with a focus on the effects of multiple soil layers and construction sequencing of dual tunnels. Results show that using the step-excavation technique can render a higher safety factor for the excavation of a tunnel compared to the entire cross-section being excavated all at once. The failure mechanisms for each different construction stage are discussed and corresponding key locations are suggested to monitor the safety during tunneling. Simultaneous excavation of dual tunnels in the same cross-section should be expressly avoided considering their potential negative interactions. The normal and shear forces as well as bending moment of the primary lining and locking anchor pipe are found to reach their maximum value at Stage 6, before closure of the primary lining. Designing these struts should consider the effects of different construction stages of shallow tunneling method.

  • Piping Systems are usually designed for thermal expansion loads based on uniform temperatures at each cross section. However, in lines with low flow rates such as surge lines and spray lines, large transverse temperature gradients have been observed, resulting in too types of additional thermal stresses : (1) local thermal gradient stresses which are independent of routing and supports and (2) gross bending stresses due to induced pipe curvature which are routing and support system dependent. This paper presents a simplified method for analyzing a PER surge line for stratified flow.

  • In this study, to verify the reliability of the indentation for measuring welding residual stresses to get in method we compared the results of the method with those measured by the saw cutting method. Also for the same purpose we used a 4-point bending test and confirmed the reliability of indentation method. The specimens used in this experiment are made with the same conditions for hot reheater pipes and cold reheater pipes used in the electric power plant. Therefore we could know that the results of the methods showed the reliability of the method to obtain welding residual stresses.

  • This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J-integral estimates for circumferential part-through surface crack at the interface between elbows and pipes. Based on finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, plastic limit moments under in-plane bending are obtained and it is found that they are similar those for circumferential part-through surface cracks in the center of elbow. Based on present FE results, closed-form limit load solutions are proposed. Welds are not explicitly considered and all materials are assumed to be homogeneous. And the method to estimate the elastic-plastic J-integral for circumferential part-through surface cracks at the interface between elbows and straight pipes is proposed based on the reference stress approach, which was compared with corresponding solutions for straight pipes.

  • The geometry PIG provides pipeline operators with continuous measurement of pipe centerline coordinates, bend radius, displacement, and bending strain in a single pass through the pipeline. This study introduces the developed geometry PIG(Pipeline Inspection Gauge) which is used for geometry surveys. This tool is equipped with the several sensor systems. The Inertial Navigation System (INS) comprises angle rate gyros and linear accelerometers. The system measures the precise path of the PIG during its traverse of the pipeline. This system is also used to produce a detailed map of the lire, measure curvature. Odometers measure the PIG´s distance moved along the line and instantaneous speed during the PIG run. Caliper sensors measure pipeline ...
