  • This study examined the ecological attributes of classified forest community by cluster analysis in the mixed forest of Mt. Seokbyung Experimental Forest of Gangwon-Do. The vegetation data were collected in randomly established 51 sample plots (2.04 ha) and analysis adopted the cluster analysis, importance value index, and Shannon's diversity index. Main results were as follows; 1) the study area was classified into 4 clusters (A, B, C and D). 2) The cluster A was dominated by Pinus densiflora with an importance value of 71.6%. The most dominant species in the cluster B and cluster C were Larix leptolepis (57.1%) and Quercus mongolica (40.2%), respectively. Finally, The cluster D was dominated by P. densiflora (30.6%) and Q. mongolica (31.0%) with the mixed forest. 3) In the P. densiflora community (cluster A), distribution of DBH class showed a reverse J-shaped curve. In the L. leptolepis community (cluster B), individuals of dominant species had the bell-shaped distribution. Oak species indicated uniform distribution of DBH class (under 25 cm) in the mixed P. densiflora - Q. mongolica community (cluster D). 4) The species diversity index of the communities in descending order were: Pinus densiflora - Q. mongolica community > Larix leptolepis community > Pinus densiflora community > Quercus mongolica community.

  • ^x This study was executed to analyze the vegetational landscape structure of Donggu Royal Tomb forest by four kinds of ordination techniques(polar, principal component analysis, reciprocal averaging, and detrended correspondence analysis) and comparison of the couple photographs between 1920s and 1987. Thirteen sites were sampled with clumped sampling method in June of 1987 and five quadrats were examined in each site. The result of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Environmental impact grade 3,4 and 5 area covered 16.11ha and these area should be restored by the input of human energy because self - refair seemed to be impossible. 2. Pinus densiflora community of actual vegetation covered 8.2%, Alnus japonica community 5.7% and quercus aliena community 15.8% of the surveyed area(73.3ha). And afforested vegetation including Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida, Alnus hirsuta and Robinia pseudoacacia covered 27.0%. 3. Donggu Royal Tomb forest was divided by Pinus densiflora, P. densiflora-Quercus aliena, Alnus japonia - Q. aliena and A. japonica community. DCA was the most effective method of this study. 4. DCA ordination were showed that succesional trends of tree species seem to be from Pinus densiflora through Prunus sargentii, Quercus serrata, Quercus aliena to Carpinus laxiflora in P. densiflora community and from Alnus japonica through Acer ginnala to Q. aliena in A. japonica community of the upper layer and from Rosa multiflora, Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa, Zanthoxylum schiniflolium through Rhus trichocarpa, Styrax japonica, Rhododendron scilippenbachii to Viburum erosum, Lindera obtusiloba in the middle layer. 5. By the comparsion of the couple photographs beween 1920s and 1987, we can recognize the change of historical landscape composed by P. densiflora and A. japonica community and those community is succeed to Q. aliena.

  • This study was carried out to analyze forest vegetation in Seodaesan of Geumsan, Chungnam Province. Employing the releve method of Braun-Blanquet and quadrat method, 36 plots were sampled in forest of Seodaesan. The sub-communities were classified into Pinus densiflora, Acer pseudosieboldianum, and Carpinus laxiflora sub-community of Quercus mongolica community. The importance values were 77.07 in Quercus mongolica, 40.79 in Pinus densiflora, 17.03 Fraxinus rhynchophylla, 14.06 in Fraxinus sieboldiana, 13.99 in Quercus serrata, 12.93 Acer pseudosiebotdianum. Coverage rate was 84.6% in tree layer, 52.8% in subtree layer, 29.1% in shrub layer, 27.9% in herb layer, respectively. Most of the DBH of Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora was between 5cm and 20cm. Therefore, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora might be dominant species in the study area for several decades. Acer pseudosieboldianum and Carpinus laxiflora sub-communities were distributed mainly in a high-altitude and northern and north-western area. Pinus densiflora sub-community was distributed mainly in a low-altitude and western area.

  • To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain ridges ranging from Sebong to Gwaneumbong 23 plots($400m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Two groups of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis-Quercus serrata community were classified by cluster analysis. Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, and Quecus mongolica were found as a mostly dominant woody plant species in the ridge area from Sebong to Gwaneumbong. In the future, the importance percentage of Pinus densiflora might be decreased, but those of Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, and Quecus mongolica might be increased. High positive correlations were proved between Quercus variabilis and Fraxinus sieboldiana, Acer palmatum and Ilex macropoda, Cornus kousa and Platycarya strobilacea, Sorbus alnifolia and Carpinus laxiflora, and relatively weak negative correlations were proved between Pinus densiflora and Carpinus laxiflora, Fraxinus sieboldiana and Carpinus laxiflor, Quecus mongolica and Sorbus alnifolia, Ilex macropoda and Sorbus alnifolia. Species diversity index(H') of investigated groups was ranged $0.665{\sim}1.169$.

  • The Populus maximowiczii dominated forest of the Sangcheon ravine, Mt. Seolag, is distributed in the area with the conglemerates substrate, along the ravine stream from 170m to 550m in altitude. Toward the both slopes of the northern and southern peak from the stream side, the zonal distribution of vegetation was recognized; P. maximowiczii forest of Pinus densiflora forest and deciduous broad leaved forest. The pure community of P. maximowiczii with even more 80-98% in relative basal area (aspen basal area/basal area) was found in the ravine area from 360m to 420m in altitude, the optimal ranges in the species and community by two dimensional ordination with thermal and xeric cline axis. The species compete with Pinus densiflora, in the ravine stream side, and with deciduous broad leaved tree species such as Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Prunus sargentii, Lindera obtusiloba, in the mountain slope sides. On the other hand, the ravine vegetation, including the aspen forest, was classified into Pinus densiflora, Pinus densiflora-Carpinus laxiflora, Pinus densiflora-Populus maximowiczii, jessoensis, Acer mono-Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Carpinus laxiflora-Quercus mongolica, Quercus variabilis-Quercus ariena, Quercus ariena, Quercus variabilis-Stephanandra incisa, Picrasma quassioides-Celtis sinensis, Betula davurica-Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Styrax obassia-Lindera obtusiloba association.

  • Vegetation structure of Sungheung fortress in Buyeo was investigated to suggest a desirable management proposal. Forset communities by phytosociological method were classified into Pinus densiflora community, Quercus serrata community and Quercus aliena community. The importance value of Pinus densiflora, Quercus aliena, Quercus serrata, Quercus variabilis, Castanea crenata, Styrax japonica, Quercus acutissima and Prunus sargentii were 34.81, 13.57, 12.63, 6.73, 6.40, 4.70, 4.54 and 3.65. According to breast diameter analysis results, it is expected that the importance value of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spec. will be continuosly increased. It should be prepared that vegetation management plan over the castle wall should be considered before the repair or restoration of castle wall. Vegetation management around castle wall should be carried out according to the mid or long-term plan and it would be needed to consider the gradual changes from planted Pinus rigida to the historical vegetation of Pinus densiflora.

  • The vegetation pattern of Mt. Odae based on the soil humidity gradient showed 3 types: (1) the forest of Pinus densiflora under the mesic or xeric conditions of the low altitudinal area, (2) the forest of Acer including A. mono, A. pseudo-sieboldianum and Tilia amurensis under the submesic or subxeric conditions and (3) the forest of Quercus including Q. mongolica of the higher elevational area and Q. variabilis of the lower elevational area under the xeric condition. Water content, organic matter and total nitrogen of soil were relatively low in Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis communities while they were relatively high in Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Quercus mongolica communities. According to the result of cluster analysis based on similarity indices of the communities, the proposed successional sere in the forest vegetation of Mt. Odae was as follows. P. densiflora community $\longrightarrow$ P. densiflore + Q. mongolica community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + A. pseudo-sieboldianum community. P. densiflora community $\longrightarrow$ P. densiflora + Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + A. pseudo-sieboldianum community.
