  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the pit structure of four kind of pine wood species grown in Korea. Torus diameter, margo width, margo lattice size, diameter of pit aperture and pit border width were taken under consideration for explaining the pit structure difference among Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida, Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi. Torus diameter was found highest in Pinus rigida and the lowest in Pinus densiflora. Margo lattice size varied with torus diameter. Wider torus lowered the margo lattice size. Highest margo width was found in Pinus rigida while the lowest one was found in Pinus koraiensis. Pit aperture diameter was found highest in Pinus densiflora and lowest in Pinus koraiensis. In Pinus rigida, pit border was found the highest and the lowest was found in Larix kaempferi. Pit aperture diameter and pit border were increased gradually from pith to bark while there was a decreasing trend in the margo lattice size measuring from the pith to bark.

  • Side-stream cigarette smoke (SSCS) is a major component of environmental tobacco smoke. The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of lung injury and lipid peroxidation in the lung and liver of immunodeficient (Nude) mice exposed to acute SSCS (a total 5 hours of exposure). The effects of French maritime bark extract (Pycnogeno $l^{ⓡ}$) supplementation of the mice were also determined. SSCS increased pulmonary resistance and lipid peroxidation in these mice. Pycnogeno $l^{ⓡ}$ supplementation increased vitamin E levels in lung and liver. In addition, Pycnogeno $l^{ⓡ}$ attenuated SSCS-mediated lung injury and lipid peroxidation. It appears that the enhanced resistance against SSCS-induced lung injury and lipid peroxidation may be primarily due to the antioxidant property of Pycnogeno $l^{ⓡ}$ in supplemented mice.

  • A component of pine bark extract, pitamin, is known as an antioxidant and antimicrobial agent that exerts a variety of physiological effects; this compound has also been used widely in human beings. A 35-day trial was conducted to determine the influence of dietary pitamin premix via a sensory evaluation and evaluations of the TBARS, and meat quality in broiler chicken. We used 4 treatments groups: Control, Antibiotics, Pitamin premix 0.1%, and Pitamin premix 0.2%. The amino acid and protein contents in chicken breast muscle did not differ among the treatment groups. The pH of broilers fed on diets containing pitamin premix was lower (p<0.05) than broilers fed on the control and antibiotics diets, whereas the WHC was significantly higher in chicken breast muscles fed on the diet containing pitamin premix compared to the control and antibiotics groups (p<0.05). The TBARS is intended to be increased during the storage period (in days), and was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the chicken thigh muscles with skin from broilers fed on the diet containing the pitamin premix as compared to the control and antibiotics group (p<0.05). The sensory evaluation of boiled chicken, with the exception of the antibiotics group, revealed significantly better results from chickens fed on diets containing pitamin premix than the control group (p<0.05). These results suggest that dietary pitamin premix may improve the shelf life, flavor, taste, and meat quality in broiler chicken.

  • An analysis of tree ring series of a lace-bark pine (Pinus bungeana Zuccarini) was carried out to find out the exact age of the tree, to describe life history of the tree affected by the change of past environmental factors, and to explain the relationships between the growth fluctuation of the tree and the change of environmental factors of the past. This study explicitly showed that the tree was about 300 years old in 1992 and that the previous estimate of the age to be about 630 years old has no ground to be justified. This was also ascertained by the close correspondence of the tree growth fluctuation to the fluctuation of soil moisture related environmental factors for the last 80 years in Seoul. Although it is clear that the tree suffered from slow growth for about 30 years initiating from the 1910s, it is not sure whether the soil moisture deficits or droughts during the years of 1910-1913 played a major role in causing the decline of the trees afterwards. Discussion was further extended for defining active roles for the Cultural Properties Administration of Korea in management and research to effectively protect the Old and Big Trees under the category of Natural Monument of Korea.

  • In this study, we investigated the anti-amnesic effect of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) bark extract (KRPBE) against amyloid beta1-42 (Aβ1-42)-induced neurotoxicity. We found that treatment with KRPBE improved the behavioral function in Aβ-induced mice, and also boosted the antioxidant system in mice by decreasing malondialdehyde (MDA) content, increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and reducing glutathione (GSH) levels. In addition, KRPBE improved the cholinergic system by suppressing reduced acetylcholine (ACh) content while also activating acetylcholinesterase (AChE), regulating the expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95), and synaptophysin. KRPBE also showed an ameliorating effect on cerebral mitochondrial deficit by regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and ATP levels. Moreover, KRPBE modulated the expression levels of neurotoxicity indicators Aβ and phosphorylated tau (p-tau) and inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, p-IκB-α, and IL-1β. Furthermore, we found that KRPBE improved the expression levels of neuronal apoptosis-related markers BAX and BCl-2 and increased the expression levels of BDNF and p-CREB. Therefore, this study suggests that KRPBE treatment has an anti-amnestic effect by modulating cholinergic system dysfunction and neuroinflammation in Aβ1-42-induced cognitive impairment in mice.

  • Uyeki(1928) classified Pinus densiflora into six ecotypes(Northeastem type, Middle-southern flat type, middle-southern upland type, Wibong type, Ankang type, and Geumgang type) based on the pine tree type. The bark color of Geumgang type was ash-brown color on the lower parts of stem and yellowed color on the upper parts of stem. We investigated the physicochemical properties of soil forests to obtain basic data for preservation of exellent pine (Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki). The results were as follows; The soil texture of the Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki forests were showed nearly as sandy loam, that is, sand, silt and clay were consisted of 72%, 15% and 13%, respectively. Soil acidity(pH 4.6) was lower than Korea average forest soil acidity(pH 5.2). The average contents of available phosphate was 11.7ppm at Sokwang-ri, 26.8ppm at Mt. Eungbong, 24.2ppm at Mt. Kumma. It was the lowest at Uljin(4.6ppm). The contents of carbon was 6.2% at Mt. Chungok, 6.1% at Mt. Eungbong. This value was more than average of Korea forest soil.

  • Alkali-soluble extracts were prepared from medium-sized barks of Radiata pine(Pinus radiata). There are difficulties in the production of extracts with uniform quality and in the preparation of adhesives with suitable viscosity. Ultrafiltration using an Amicon cell was subjected to fractionate extracts according to molecular sizes in order to overcome the above problem. The filtration efficiency was studied by using thin channel filtration systems. Adhesive manufacturing was also examined. Removal of particles greater than 0.45m from the extracts increased both filtration speed (flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. Ultrafiltration with PM 10 membrane was very effective to fractionate and concentrate the extracts. Stiasny precipitates from the filtrates obtained by PM 10 membrane were very lower than that(83%) of the retentates. This ultrafiltration method was efficient for obtaining high yield purified phenolic compounds(mainly polyflavanoids) and thus important for preparing wood adhesives from barks. The extracts were shown excessive high viscosities at the concentrations required for adhesive formulation, but this high viscosity and short gelation time was reduced by lowering pH of the extracts and addition of urea. The highest bonding strength of plywoods(340g/$m^2$ of adhesive spreads) was achieved with adhesive formulated by 100parts of mixed alkali extracts and urea(70/30,w/w), 10parts of p-formaldehyde and 3.5parts of wheat flour at pH 6, and by hot pressing at the conditions of 12kg/$cm^2$ at $120^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes.

  • Japanese pine sawyer (JPS), Monochamus alternatus is a vector insect of pine wood nematode, Bersaphlenchus xylophilus in Korea and Japanese pine forest. This study was to evaluate the possibility of biological control of JPS with Korean entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). Korean EPNs (Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan, Steinernema carpocapsae GSN1, S. glaseri Dongrae and S. longicaudum Nonsan strain) were infested bate insect, Galleria mellonella in log of dead pine tree. Result showed that, S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain has the highest pathogenicity. Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan and S. carpocapsae GSN1 had infested bate insect, which located in 7.5 cm depth of pine log. EPN has pathogenicity against larva and adult of JPS. Spray application of EPNs against adult of JPS, Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan strain showed higher pathogenicity than S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain. EPN infested larva of JPS was detected on bark spray treatment with S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain in dead pine log that naturally infested larva of JPS however, no EPN infested JPS was detected on soaking of pine log with suspension of S. carpocapsae GSN1 strain. Though EPN had found with low efficacy against JPS but still possible to apply to control the boring insect pest as they can control log dwelling insect.
