A Study on the Safe Maneuvering of a G/T 100,000 Ton LNG Vessel by Using Her Control Surface through a Narrow Channel

  • Nawadays LNG has been beginning to take the place of petroleum as fuel all over the world and VLCC tankers of LNG will take the same sea routes that had been used by VLCC tankers of petroleum in the last pat of he 20th century. The transportation of LNG by a VLCC include more dangerous nature of sea peril than that of petroleum. We already know the dimensions of a disaster a LNG tanker could bring about in the case of the LNG tanker, Yuyo-Maru No. 10 in the Tokyo Bay of Japan in 1974. From the point of safety when we construct a LNG base or LNG pier in the base, the appropriate government authority and constructing company had better take sea pilots or some ships handling experts to participate in a prior consultation of the design of the project. A G/T 100,000 ton LNG base and pier were completed in November of 1996 in Inchon harbour in Korea and LNG VLCC tankers of G/T 100,000 ton class have been entering into the base ever since. This study was started and completed to comply with the requisition of the Sea Pilot Association of Inchon harbour in advance of the opening of the LNG base. As the entrance and exit channels leading to Inchon harbour were constructed in the years of 1930s, it was one of the most pressing works for Inchon sear pilots in 1996 to certify the method of safe passing maneuvering of a G/T 100,000 ton LNG tanker through the Pudo narrow channel prior to commercing actual piloting of the LNG VLCC tanker. The author made some mathematical models computing maneuvering of a vessel changing her course with her control surface through a narrow channel and computed maneuvering of a G/T 100,000 ton LNG tanker and also made maneuvering simulations of the vessel by a desk-top simulator. The results of computations and simulations are well coincided with each other in qualitative aspects to assure safe passing of the LNG VLCC.

Piloting the FBDC Model to Estimate Forest Carbon Dynamics in Bhutan

  • Bhutanese forests have been well preserved and can sequester the atmospheric carbon (C). In spite of its importance, understanding Bhutanese forest C dynamics was very limited due to the lack of available data. However, forest C model can simulate forest C dynamics with comparatively limited data and references. In this study, we aimed to simulate Bhutanese forest C dynamics at 6 plots with the Forest Biomass and Dead organic matter Carbon (FBDC) model, which can simulate forest C cycles with small amount of input data. The total forest C stock ($Mg\;C\;ha^{-1}$) ranged from 118.35 to 200.04 with an average of 168.41. The C stocks ($Mg\;C\;ha^{-1}$) in biomass, litter, dead wood, and mineral soil were 3.40-88.13, 4.24-24.95, 1.99-20.31, 91.45-97.90, respectively. On average, the biomass, litter, dead wood, and mineral soil accounted for 36.0, 5.5, 2.5, and 56.0% of the total C stocks, respectively. Although our modeling approach was applied at a small pilot scale, it exhibited a potential to report Bhutanese forest C inventory with reliable methodology. In order to report the national forest C inventory, field work for major tree species and forest types in Bhutan are required.

  • 이 연구는 일반적인 인지이론을 조종사 기술의 범위로 확대시켜, 조종사가 얼마나 빠르고 정확하게 상황인식을 하는지를 제시문과 비행 장면 일치성 측정을 통해 알아보았다. 이 연구의 목적은 두 가지 측면의 변인에 따라 상황인식이 전문성의 영향을 받는지를 알아보는 것이다. 비행 요소간의 관계를 나타내는 비행 상황 변인들과 비행 요소의 내용을 나타내는 비행 상황 변인들 모두 비행 상황인식에 영향을 주었다 그리고 작업기억은 다양한 정보들을 통합시키는 데 결정적인 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 비행 상황인식의 바탕인 인지적 과정을 나타내는 구조화통합 모델의 이론적 틀 안에서 설명되어진다.

BATHYMETRIC MODULATION ON WAVE SPECTRA

  • Ocean surface waves may be modified by ocean current and their observation may be severely distorted if the observer is on a moving platform with changing speed. Tidal current near a sill varies inversely with the water depth, and results spatially inhomogeneous modulation on the surface waves near the sill. For waves propagating upstream, they will encounter stronger current before reaching the sill, and therefore, they will shorten their wavelength with frequency unchanged, increase its amplitude, and it may break if the wave height is larger than 1/7 of the wavelength. These small scale (${\sim}$ 1 km changes is not suitable for satellite radar observation. Spatial distribution of wave-height spectra S(x, y) can not be acquired from wave gauges that are designed for collecting 2-D wave spectra at fixed locations, nor from satellite radar image which is more suitable for observing long swells. Optical images collected from cameras on-board a ship, over high-ground, or onboard an unmanned auto-piloting vehicle (UAV) may have pixel size that is small enough to resolve decimeter-scale short gravity waves. If diffuse sky light is the only source of lighting and it is uniform in camera-viewing directions, then the image intensity is proportional to the surface reflectance R(x, y) of diffuse light, and R is directly related to the surface slope. The slope spectrum and wave-height spectra S(x, y) may then be derived from R(x, y). The results are compared with the in situ measurement of wave spectra over Keelung Sill from a research vessel. The application of this method is for analysis and interpretation of satellite images on studies of current and wave interaction that often require fine scale information of wave-height spectra S(x, y) that changes dynamically with time and space.

  • 해상 및 해안에서 공경비를 보조하고 민간경비수요에 부응하는 고품질 경비서비스를 제공할 수 있는 민간경비제도 도입을 위한 기초연구로 육상 민간경비업의 현황과 경비지도사 제도를 분석하였다. 또한 해양민간경비 대상영역 탐색과 해양경비 현황분석을 통하여 해양영역에 민간경비서비스 제도의 도입 필요성 및 해양경비의 특수성과 전문성을 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 해양경비 현장에서 중추적인 역할과 업무를 담당할 해양경비사 제도를 제안하고 효과적인 해양경비업무 수행에 필요한 해양경비사 자격 조건과 선발시험 과목을 구성하였으며, 경비현장의 실무능력 향상을 위한 교육 프로그램을 설계하였다. 해양경비법에 해양경비업 조항 신설을 제안하여 해양경찰이 해양민간경비를 감독하고 관리함으로써 공경비와 사경비의 시너지 효과 창출은 물론 해양경비산업의 건전한 발전과 국제경쟁력을 갖출 수 있는 기반을 마련하였다.

초ㆍ중학생의 과학선호도 실태 비교 분석 (A Comparative Status Analysis of Elementary and Middle School Students Preference for Science)

  • The purpose of this research was to survey and compare the status of science preference of elementary school students with that of middle school students. Preference for science was defined theoretically. According to theoretical model, a questionnaire was developed with piloting and consisted of three parts. First part was for background information, second part, for measurement of science preference and third for measurement of the relevant factors of science preference. The questionnaire was modified for primary school students. In July 2002, the questionnaire was administered to one class per grade of randomly selected 8 elementary and 8 middle schools all over the country and analyzed result of collected 696 elementary school students and 819 middle school students. Middle school students' science preference was low compared with elementary school students, especially in 'emotional response and 'valuational comprehension'. The preference for science became lower especially from 4th to 5th grade and from 8th to 9th grade. The differences of mean science preference were significant by gender. perception of science achievement. and future career choice. The average of science preference relevant factors of middle school students also became lower than elementary students, especially in 'educational factor'. Multiple regression analysis on the science preference showed that important factors were personal ability, the personal traits, rewards in school science and contents of school science, slightly different in elementary and secondary school. The way to promote students' preference for science was suggested on the analysis result.

  • 선박을 건조하는 수많은 공정 중에서 화물창 내의 도장작업은 대부분 고공에서의 작업뿐만 아니라 밀폐된 탱크 내에서 작업을 하는 경우가 많기 때문에 항상 사고의 위험에 노출되어 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하는 방법으로 진공 펌프와 로봇에 장착된 흡착판을 이용하여 로봇을 벽면에 부착하는 방법이 개발되어져 왔다. 하지만 이러한 방법들은 다양한 재질의 벽면에 적용이 가능하다는 장점이 있는 반면에 흡착판이 고착된 상태에서 이동하기 힘들다는 것과 부착을 위해 부가장비와 그에 따른 제어가 요구된다는 단점이 있다. 이러한 단점을 보완하기 위해 본 논문에서는 자석의 성질을 이용하여 선체의 평면, 수직면까지 매달린 채도 이동가능한 자석대차를 이용한 자동 도장 로봇장치를 제안한다. 또한 시제작품을 제작하여 성능 실험을 위해 자석바퀴 부착력, 대차부착력, 견인력 및 자동주행실험을 하였다.

실측선위의 정도개선과 항법계산의 전산화에 관한 연구 (A Sttudy on the Optimal estimation of the Fixed Position and Compterization of the Navigational Calculations)

  • This paper concerns the applications of the Kalman filter to navigation and the develment of computer programs of the navigational calculations. Methods to apply the Kalman filter to celestial fix, fix by cross bearing and cocked hat are proposed, and numerical simulations under various noise conditiions are conducted. The accuracy of the optimal positions obtained by the Kalman filter is compared with that of the fixed positiions by radial error method. In the case of celestial fix, an algorithm to estimate the optimal positions by using the linear Kalman filter is presented. The optimal positions by the Kalman filter are compared with the running fixes and with the most probable positions obtained from a single line of position. It is confirmed that the resutls of the proposed method are more accurate than the others. In practical piloting, bearings are generally measured intermittently and the measurement process is nonlinear. It is, therefore, difficult for us to apply the Kalman filter to fix by cross bearing. In order to be used in such an unfavorable case, the extended Kalman filter is revised and the aplicability of the revised extended Kalman filter is checked by numerical simulation under various noise conditions. In a cocked hat, an inside or outside fix is dependent only upon azimuth spread, if the error of each line of position is assumed to be equal both in magnitude and sign. A new technique of selecting a ship's position between an inside fix and an outside fix in a cocked hat by using fix determinant derived from the equation of three lines of position is also presented. The relations among the optimal position by Kalman filter, incentre (or excentre) and random error centtre of the cocked hat are discussed theoretically and the accuracy of the optimal position is compared with that of the others by numerical simulation.

지문항해학 학술용어 개념정립에 관한 연구 - 침로와 선수방향을 중심으로 - (Studies on the Redefinition of Terrestrial Navigation's Basic Terms - mainly on course and heading -)

  • 우리나라의 지문항해학은 1969년 윤여정은 지구과학, 항로표지, 수로도지, 조석 및 조류, 연안항법, 항정선항법 및 대권항법 등을 중심으로 실무적 경험과 학문적 이론에 입각하여 지문항해학 교재를 집필하였는데, 이것은 지금까지도 해기전문 인력을 교육하는 주요 교재로 이용되고 있다. 그러나 이 '지문항해학'의 일부 내용의 경우 해운선진국이라 할 수 있는 미국, 영국 및 일본에서 출판된 항해학관련 도서를 바탕으로 하였기 때문에 설명되는 과정에서 적용한 학술용어가 맞지 않거나 설명이 부족하여 독자의 이해부족과 오해를 초래하고 있다. 이 연구에서는 선박의 이동방향에 관한 기초 용어인 침로(Course)와 선수방향(Heading)이 가지고 있는 문제점과 논란의 원인을 분석하였고, 이론적 검토를 통하여 사용상 오류와 혼동을 방지할 수 있도록 용어의 개념을 새롭게 정립하였다.

The Comparison and Analysis of Maritime Precise Positioning using GPS Based Smartphone

  • According to the Korea Coast Guard's maritime disaster statistics (Korea Coast Guard 2017, Korean Statistical information Service 2018), an average of 2,140 marine accidents occurred every year for the past 6 years and the number of accidents is increasing every year. Among them, maritime accidents of fishing vessels are the most frequent, and recently accidents involving fishing boat and leisure vessels are rapidly increasing as well. In particular, the number of accidents involving leisure vessels increased to about one-third of the accidents of fishing vessels, and emergency rescue requests are increasing every year accordingly. However, the number of crash accidents involving users of small vessels and marine leisure activities are increasing because of the difficulties of installing navigation equipment and electronic navigation charts. Recently, the demand for precise positioning using mobile devices is increasing in the fields of maritime safety, piloting support, and coastal survey. Although various applications of smart devices provide location-based services for users, the measurement results are discontinuous when using the position coordinates of the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) calculated by smartphone. Recently, Google announced that they will provide GPS raw data to developers from Android 7.0 Nougat. As a result, developers have an opportunity to receive precise carrier phase and code measurements to make more accurate positioning according to the performance of Android devices. This study analyzed GPS positioning performance using Android devices, and compared and analyzed the positioning performance at sea with high-performance GPS receivers.
