An experimental study was performed on the decomposition of gaseous ammonia and two selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs: toluene and acetone) in a combined nonthermal plasma reactor with corona and glow discharges. A lab pilot scale reactor (206 liter) equipped with a high electric power pack was used to determine the decomposition efficiency in relation with the inlet concentration and applied voltage. Three different types of discharging electrode such as wired rack, wire strings for corona discharge, and thin plate for glow discharge were put in order in the reactor. While decomposition of ammonia decreased with an increase in the initial concentration, acetone showed an opposite result. In the case of toluene however no explicit tendency was found in toluene and aceton. Negative discharge resulted in high decomposition efficiency than the positive one for all gases. A better removal of gas phase element could be achieved when fume dust were present simultaneously.
A novel multi-staged waste pyrolysis & gasification system of pilot scale (~1 ton/day) is designed and constructed in Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. The pyrolysis & gasification system is composed of pyrolysis & gasification system, syngas reformer, syngas cleaning system, gas engine power generation system and co-combustion system. For each unit process, experimental approaches have been conducted to find optimal design and operating conditions. As a result, We can produce syngas with a calorific value of ~4000 kcal/$Nm^3$ and cold gas efficiency of the system is more than 55 % in case of waste plastic and oxygen as a gasifying agent.
Compost stability represents the state of microbiological activity and measurements of respiration either through $CO_2$ evolution or $O_2$ uptake should provide the best indication of this state. Hog manure amended with sawdust was composted in a pilot-scale reactor vessels using continuous and intermittent aeration for 3 weeks. In this study we evaluated the $CO_2$ respiration rate effect of aeration method on the reduction of $CO_2$ evolution, and investigated the stability of fresh and finished compost for plant growth. The intermittently aerated composting is a practical proposition for a very stable compost making. The $CO_2$ respiration rate in the fresh and finished compost during intermittently aerated composting was maintained from 0.3 to 1.4 and was good for use in horticulture, while the continuously aerated composting was 7 to 23 and needed more time for compost curing.
The optimum conditions for the submerged mycelial culture of Lentinus edodes SR-1 were elucidated to be incubation temperature of 25C, initial pH 4.0, agitation of 300 rpm, inoculation of 10.0%(v/v), and aeration of 1.0 v/v/m in TGY medium. The optimum c/n ratio and economic yield coeffcient for the submerged mycelial culture were 13.1:1 and 0.45 respectively. As the plant growth hormones test, SCM medium containing 0.5ppm of 2,4-dicholorophenoxyacetic acid increased mycelial yield in 1.1%, but 6-benzylaminopurine was not effective.
Composting of water hyacinth, mixed with cattle manure, rice husk and sawdust in four different proportions, was performed in a pilot scale rotary drum composter. The physico-chemical characteristics, i.e., temperature, moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity, total organic matter (OM), nitrogen dynamics and nutrients were evaluated during the 20 days composting process. The stabilities of the composts were also investigated with respirometric analysis, i.e., $CO_2$ evolution rates and oxygen uptake rate (OUR). Among all trials, trial 1 (6 water hyacinth, 3 cattle manure, 1 rice husk) indicated the best composting mix, as shown by the highest temperature profile and OM loss, and lowest $CO_2$ evolution rate and OUR.
Pilot-scale experiments on the oxidation of TiCl4 to produce TiO2 were carried out in a verical reactor of 20cm in inside diameter and 140cm in length ; LPG burning was used as a heating means to maintain the reaciton temperature. The effects of reaction temperature and excess oxygen content on the conversion of TiCl4 and on the particle size of produced TiO2 were investigated. The ranges of operating conditions varied were 900 to TiO2 was 0.45-0.57${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, TiCl4 conversion was 82-96%, the rutile content was 33-57% and the contents of impurities were 0.03% of Fe, 0.03% of SiO2 and 62ppm of Cl. These experimental results were compared with those of other investigators.
Purpose: The feasibility and differential effects of two music therapy methods (interventions with preferred music vs. classical relaxation music) were done to examine the effects on agitation and anxiety in patients weaning off mechanical ventilation. Methods: This pilot study was conducted using a crossover design. Six patients listened to preferred music choices and classical relaxation music. Anxiety scores were measured using the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and visual analog scale (VAS). Results: Patients showed a significant decrease in agitation and anxiety after both the preferred and classical relaxation music interventions. The difference in the effects of preferred music and that of classical relaxation music was not significant. As for feasibility, patients exhibited a change in agitated behaviors after the music interventions by not trying to take off medical devices and quietly listening to the music, and by smiling and moving lips along with the lyrics while listening. Conclusion: Music interventions which centered on either patients' preferences or classical relaxation music to enhance relaxation, helped reduce agitation and anxiety during the mechanical ventilation weaning process.
Although membrane distillation (MD) has great promise for desalination of saline water sources, it is crucial to improve its thermal efficiency to reduce the operating cost. Accordingly, this study intended to examine the thermal energy efficiency of MD modules in a pilot scale system. Two different modules of hollow fiber membranes were compared in direct contact MD mode. One of them was made of polypropylene with the effective membrane area of $2.6m^2$ and the other was made of polyvinylidene fluoride with the effective membrane area of $7.6m^2$. The influence of operation parameters, including the temperatures of feed and distillate, feed flow rate, and distillate flow rate on the flux, recovery, and performance ratio (PR), was investigated. Results showed that the two MD membranes showed different flux and PR values even under similar conditions. Moreover, both flow rate and temperature difference between feed and distillate significantly affect the PR values. These results suggest that the operating conditions for MD should be determined by considering the module properties.
