A railway embankment route extending to 2 km was laid on normally consolidated clay in the West Gimhae Plain. This embankment was first built using the stage-construction technique, but longitudinal cracks suggesting arc sliding appeared on the surface of the embankment immediately after the first stage of its construction. As an alternative, the piled raft was installed on the failed embankment and then the remaining height of the embankment was raised. The behavior of the piled raft was monitored with different instruments during construction. This paper describes the monitoring results and analyses. The results show that if the pile group essentially exhibits the behavior of friction piles, the piled raft foundation performs well even in normally consolidated soft clay.

A series of centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the behavior of piled bridge abutment subjected to lateral soil movements induced by the construction of approach embankment. In these tests, both the depth of soft clay and the rate of embankment construction are chosen as key parameters to examine the effects on lateral soil movements. The depth of soft clay layer varies from 5.2 m to 11.6 m, and the rate of embankment construction has two types of staged construction(1m/30days, 1m/15days) and instant construction. It is shown that, the distribution of lateral flow induced by stage embankment construction has a trapezoidal distribution. And practical guidelines to check the possibility of some lateral movement of piled abutment were investigated. The validity of the proposed guidelines by centrifuge test was compared with the observed performance by lateral movement index, F(Japan Highway Public Corporation) and modified I index(Korea Highway Corporation). Based on the results obtained, the critical values of F and modified I, as a practical guidelines, are proposed to 0.03 and 2.0, respectively.

In order to control differential settlement and to secure the safety of super structure on a high rock embankment the designed static compaction is changed with dynamic compaction and piled raft method. The parameters for dynamic compaction design are obtained from a pilot test. In addition, numerical analyses are also carried out to figure out the length and quantity of piled raft that can restraint the differential settlement within allowance range.
In the geosynthetics-reinforced piled embankment the effects of soft soil stiffness, friction angle of the fill material, tensile stiffness of geosynthetics, and height of the embankment on the load transfer soil arch measured by the critical height were numerically investigated. Results from parametric studies show that the magnitude of the soft soil stiffness is the most influencing factor on the critical height. The contour charts of the critical height with respect to the combination of the soft soil stiffness and other parameters were presented. The charts show that the critical height sensitively varies with the combination of the soft soil stiffness and the height of embankment. Under the sufficiently low stiffness of soft soil, the critical height sensitively varies with the friction angle of the fill material. Once the geosynthetic layer is placed, however, the magnitude of the tensile stiffness of the geosynthetic layer hardly influences the critical height of the soil arch.
Interest to basal reinforced piled embankments is increasing recently due to their rapid construction and reliability. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to determine effects of pile properties, reinforcement stiffness, embankment properties and soft soil properties into settlements, pressures and excess pore water pressure development and dissipations. Results which are obtained by using one-layer reinforcement during construction are compared with the results obtained by using two-layer reinforcement during construction. Finite element method is used during the parametric study. Second layer of reinforcement is placed in five different positions in order to reveal effects of reinforcement position into behaviour. Traffic load is also taken into consideration during the study. Differences between the results without presence of traffic loading and with presence of traffic loading is stated in this the study.
A numerical analysis on the effect of increasing tensile stiffness of the geosynthetics on the soil displacement and pile efficiency was conducted. Parametric studies by changing the stiffness of soft soil, internal friction and dilatancy angles of the embankment material, and flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics were carried out. In general, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics improves the pile efficiency, whereas the amount of its improvement depends on the condition of parameters. In case of the sufficiently low stiffness of the soft soil or high flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics, a noticeable increase in the pile efficiency can be observed. When the stiffness of the soft soil is very low, the increase in the stiffness of the geosynthetics can significantly reduce the vertical displacement in the piled embankment. When the flexual stiffness of the composite layer is sufficiently high, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics can greatly improve the pile efficiency.
A series of centrifuge model tests were conducted to investigate the behavior of piled bridge abutments subjected to lateral soil movements induced by approach embankments. The effect of clay layer depth and the rate of embankment construction on piled bridge abutments are the main focus of this study. Tests were performed for two loading types: (1) incremental loading applied in six lifts to the final embankment height; (2) instant loading corresponding to the final embankment height applied in one lift quickly. A variety of instrumentations such as LVDTs, strain gauges, earth pressure transducers, and pore pressure transducers are installed in designed positions in order to clarify the soil-pile interaction and the short- and long-term behavior for piled bridge abutments adjacent to surcharge loads. Based on the results of a series of centrifuge model tests, the distribution of lateral flow induced by staged embankment construction has trapezoidal distribution. The maximum lateral soil pressure is about 0.75$\gamma$H at surcharge loading stage, and about 0.35 $\gamma$H at over 80% consolidated stage.
The increasing lack of good quality soils allowing the development of roadway, motorway, or railway networks, as well as large scale industrial facilities, necessitates the use of reinforcement techniques. Their aim is the improvement of the global performance of compressible soils, both in terms of settlement reduction and increase of the load bearing capacity. Among the various available techniques, the improvement of soils by incorporating vertical stiff piles appears to be a particularly appropriate solution, since it is easy to implement and does not require any substitution of significant soft soil volumes. The technique consists in driving a group of regularly spaced piles through a soft soil layer down to an underlying competent substratum. The surface load being thus transferred to this substratum by means of those reinforcing piles, which illustrates the case of a piled embankment. The differential settlements at the base of the embankment between the soft soil and the stiff piles lead to an "arching effect" in the embankment due to shearing mechanisms. This effect, which can be accentuated by the use of large pile caps, allows partial load transfer onto the pile, as well as surface settlement reduction, thus ensuring that the surface structure works properly. A technique for producing rigid piles has been developed to achieve in a single operation a rigid circular pile associated with a cone shaped head reversed on the place of a rigid circular pile. This technique has been used with success in a pile-supported road near Bourgoin-Jallieu (France). In this article, a numerical study based on this real case is proposed to highlight the functioning mode of this new technique in the case of industrial slabs.

Embankment of reservoir Gonggeomji in Sangju has been continuously added since the construction. After approximately 1220 yr BP of late Unified Silla dynasty when the embankment was firstly constructed, there were piled up four times with an interval of approximately 50 years until ca. 980 yr BP of late Goryeo dynasty. The first two times were relatively piled up high, while another two times were made slightly high. After addition of embankment, water level gradually became low and the quality also bad with increase of benthic- and epipitic diatoms than planktonic ones. Shoaling of reservoir was probably resulted from severe vegetation destructions on the small river basins flowing into Gonggeomji. After approximately 980 yr BP, water level rose during approximately 50 years due to precipitation increase.
In this study, practical guidelines to check the possibility of some lateral movement of piled abutment were investigated. In these tests, both the depth of soft clay and the rate of embankment construction are chosen to examine the effect on lateral soil movements. The depth of soft clay layer varies from 5.2 m to 11.6 m, and the rate of embankment construction has two types : staged construction(1m/30days, 1m/15days) and instant construction. Various measuring instruments such as LVDTs, strain gauges, pressure cells, and pore pressure transducers are installed in designed positions in ordo. to clarify the soil - pile interaction and the short and long term behavior f3. piled bridge abutments adjacent to surcharge loads. The validity of the proposed guidelines by centrifuge test was compared with the observed performance by lateral movement index, F(Japan Highway Public Corporation) and modified I index(Korea Highway Corporation). Based on the results obtained, the critical values off and modified I, as a practical guidelines, are proposed as 0.03 and 2.0, respectively.
