Radiation detection systems working at high count rates suffer from the overlapping of their output electric pulses, known as pulse pile-up phenomenon, resulting in spectrum distortion and degradation of the energy resolution. Pulse tail extrapolation is a pile-up correction method which tries to restore the shifted baseline of a piled-up pulse by extrapolating the overlapped part of its preceding pulse. This needs a mathematical model which is almost always nonlinear, fitted usually by a nonlinear least squares (NLS) technique. NLS is an iterative, potentially time-consuming method. The main idea of the present study is to replace the NLS technique by an integration-based non-iterative method (NIM) for pulse tail extrapolation by an exponential model. The idea of linear extrapolation, as another non-iterative method, is also investigated. Analysis of experimental data of a NaI(Tl) radiation detector shows that the proposed non-iterative method is able to provide a corrected spectrum quite similar with the NLS method, with a dramatically reduced computation time and complexity of the algorithm. The linear extrapolation approach suffers from a poor energy resolution and throughput rate in comparison with NIM and NLS techniques, but provides the shortest computation time.

Two MIMAS MaX fuel rods base-irradiated in a commercial PWR have been reinstrumented and irradiated at a test reactor. The fabrication data for two MOX roda are characterized together with base irradiation information. Both Rods were reinstrumented to be fitted with thermocouple to measure centerline temperature of fuel. One rod was equipped with pressure transducer for rod internal pressure whereas the other with cladding elongation detector. The post irradiation examinations for various items were performed to determine fuel and cladding in-pile behavior after base irradiation. By using well characterized fabrication and re-instrumentation data and power history, the fuel performance code, COSMOS, is verified with measured in-pile and PIE information. The COMaS code shows good agreement for the cladding oxidation and creep, and fission gas release when compared with PIE dad a after base irradiaton. Based on the re-instrumention information and power history measured in-pile, the COSMOS predicts re-instrumented in-pile thermal behaviour during power up-ramp and steady operation with acceptable accuracy. The rod internal pressure is also well simulated by COSMOS code. Therfore, with all the other verification by COSMOS code up to now, it can be concluded that COSMOS fuel performance code is applicable for the design and license for MaX fuel rods up to high burnup.

Steel pile foundations are widely used for offshore constructions due to their high bearing capacity and efficiency. Typically, offshore structures that have reached the end of their design life are required to be demolished. However, pile foundations are often left on site due to technical and economic limitations. The pile left on the site not only pollutes the environment, but can also cause obstacles for the construction of new structures. Therefore, research is required to completely eliminate these foundations at the site. In this study, a new type of double-wall pile foundation that can drastically reduce the pull-out load was conceptually proposed, and a series of model tests were performed to validate the performance of the double-wall pile foundation. The installation and extraction of the double-wall pile were simulated in dry sand in the model test, and the measured up-lift load was compared to that of the conventional pile. According to the result, the maximum up-lift load induced by the decommissioning of the double-wall pile was reduced by 45% when compared to the traditional pile in dense sand. This study verified the mechanism for reducing the up-lift load of the double-wall foundation and confirmed the possibility of completely decommissioning a pile that has reached the end of its nominal service life.

The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of superstructure considering several factors such as change of pile rigidity, soil characteristics, and the constraint condition of support. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Pile-rigidity computed by the rotating deformed plane method is continuously varied up to approximately 5D(D=diameter of pile) below the ground level. This result is consistent with the previous study$^{(12)}$, in which the pile deformation occurs at approximately $3{\sim}6$ times of pile diameter from the ground level. 2. For bridge structure-pile system, analytical results of internal forces and deformations show different values for modified pile rigidity and unchanged pile rigidity. 3. Detaild analysis considering modified pile rigidity is required for the long-span bridge design with structure pile system.

Most of the piles are designed as group piles. In certain geotechnical environments, the installation of group piles causes heaving of the already installed piles. The unfavorable effects of pile heaving on pile bearing capacity have been well known to field engineers. However not many engineers pay enough attention to this subject. According to our recent researches, not only the bearing capacity but also the pile material could be seriously damaged due to the installation of nearby piles, especially with the cases of precast concrete piles. When the pull-out force due to installation of neighboring piles acting on the already installed precast concrete pile exceeds the shaft friction, pile heaving occurs. At the same time, if the pull-out force exceeds the allowable tensile strength of the precast concrete pile, tensile failure is inevitable, which is critical for the pile integrity. In other cases the pile material was not damaged but serious relaxation occurred as the results of pile heaving. In this paper, the pull-out mechanism due to the installation of group piles is explained.

Elastic and plastic deformation behaviors of the high purity aluminum and the silica glass were studied using nanoindentation and finite element analysis(FEA) techniques. Berkovich- and cone-type indenters were used for the nanoindentation test. Deformation behaviors and nanoindent profiles of elastic, elastic-plastic or plastic materials were clearly visualized by FEA simulation. Effects of the penetration depth and strain hardening on the deformation behavior were examined. Pile-up and sink-in behaviors were studied by using FEA technique. Degree of pile-up or sink-in was found to be a function of the ratio of elastic modulus to yield strength of materials. FEA was found to be an effective method to study deformation behaviors of materials under nanoindentation, especially in the case when pile-up or sink-in phenomena occurred.
Since the early forties, researchers from around the world have been studying the phenomenon of deadtime in radiation detectors. Many have attempted to develop models to represent this phenomenon. Two highly idealized models; paralyzable and non-paralyzable are commonly used by most individuals involved in radiation measurements. Most put little thought about the operating conditions and applicability of these ideal models for their experimental conditions. So far, there is no general agreement on the applicability of any given model for a specific detector under specific operating conditions, let alone a universal model for all detectors and all operating conditions. Further the related problem of pile-up is often confused with the deadtime phenomenon. Much work, is needed to devise a generalized and practical solution to these related problems. Many methods have been developed to measure and compensate for the detector deadtime count loss, and many researchers have addressed deadtime and pulse pile-up. The goal of this article is to summarize the state of science of deadtime; measurement and compensation techniques as proposed by some of the most significant work on these topics and to review the deadtime correction models applicable to present day radiation detection systems.

In this study, the design method of the combined sheet pile was considered in the coastal landfill where sandy and clayey soils are mixed, and the behavior in excavation was analyzed. It was confirmed from the elasto-plastic analysis that the predicted behavior of the temporary facilities of earth retaining differs according to the type of the combined sheet pile method (Built up, Interlocking, Welding) and the analysis method (soldier pile method, continuous wall method). In the case of sheet pile member force, the results of the continuous wall analysis method predicted the most conservative results. When the stress ratio (calculation/allowance) of each member was analyzed based on the maximum member force of the combined sheet pile method, the maximum value was obtained for bending moment in the side pile and combined stress in the case of the strut. As a result of finite element analysis, the member force of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress analysis condition, while the compressive force of the strut was large in the consolidation analysis. When comparing the results of the elasto-plastic analysis and the finite element analysis, the shear force of the side pile and the axial force of the strut were greatly evaluated in the elasto-plastic analysis, and the bending moment of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress condition of the finite element analysis. In addition, the displacement of the side pile was predicted to be greater in the finite element analysis than in the elasto-plastic analysis.
The bearing capacity of piles driven in soils showing set-up tendency increases with time. Though WEAP is an excellent tool for evaluating the driveability of driven pile, it has some limitations to predict reliable bearing capacity of pile after driving. It is because the existing WEAP method cannot take into account time-dependent soil properties after driving. The set-up effect should be accounted for to obtain a reliable bearing capacity by the WEAP. Unfortunately, there are no sufficient methods to take the set-up effect into consideration in wave equation analysis. This paper suggests an alternative to consider time effect in wave equation analysis through statistical analysis of dynamic load test data both at the end of driving and in the beginning of restrike. It is shown that the suggested parameters(quake and damping) would be more reliable than the existing one for the wave equation analysis of driven piles.

Measurements of the elastic modulus and hardness using a nano indentation machine rely on the equation for the fitted contact area, which is valid for only sink-in materials. For most soft engineering materials that involve pile-up behavior rather than sink-in, the contact area equation underestimates the contact area and thus overestimates the elastic modulus and hardness. This study proposes a correction method to amend erroneous hardness measurements in pile-up situations. The method is a supplemental derivation to the original hardness measurement with the known value of the elastic modulus. The method was examined for soft engineering metals, Al 6061 T6 and C 12200, via tensile tests, nano indentation tests, impression observations, and finite element analysis. The proposed technique shows reasonable agreement with the analytical results accounting for strain gradient plasticity from a previous study.
