The characteristics of the PZT/PMM and PZT/Butadiene composites with 3 dimensional network structure have been investigated as a function of the PZT volume fraction. The dielectric constants of the PZT composites increased linearly as the PZT volume fraction increased. However, they are not significantly affected by the polymer compliance. The piezoelectric d33 coefficients of the PZT/Butadiene are largest than the PZT/PMM because of the high elastic compliance which promotes stress transfer. The values of the mechanical quality factor adn frequency factor of the PZT/PMM composite are slightly larger, while the planar coupling factor is smaller, than the PZT/Butadiene composite. These results are due to strong interaction and mechanical coupling between PZT and PMM.
This research was a fundamental study for the low temperature sintering of PZTN by glass phase transient processing. To lower the sintering temperature, the glass phase Processing was used. Also to improve the electrical properties, the transient processing was utilized. After characterization, the various analytic techniques, such as Archimedes method for the measuring densification, x-ray diffraction patterns for the quantitative analysis of crystalline phases were utilized. Also the dielectric constant, dissipation factor, and piezoelectric coefficients were measured to evaluate the PZTN sintered at the $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. This was confirmed that the sintering temperature of PZTN was reduced by $950^{\circ}C$ and the electrical properties were improved by the transition processing. Therefore, the glass phase transient processing can be applicable to low the sintering temperature with the dielectric and piezoelectric properties.
The piezocomposite transducer is widely used because it is highly efficient in transforming electric energy into mechanical energy, and its frequency range is broader than that of other types of ultrasound transducers. A general piezocomposite transducer is composed of an acoustic lens, impedance matching layers, piezoelectric materials, and backing layers. When an input voltage is applied to a piezoelectric material as an active material, it generates sound waves while vibrating. At that time, an impedance matching layer helps the sound waves to propagate forward while reducing the impedance mismatch that may occur at the interface between the active material and its front material. The impedance mismatch has a negative effect on the signal of an ultrasound transducer; thus, it is important to design a matching layer to overcome the issue. In this study, an optimized feature of a matching layer with gradient properties is studied. An objective function is defined to minimize both the average and the deviation of the reflection coefficients that are functions of the frequencies. As a result, an improvement in the signal characteristics with respect to the sensitivity and bandwidth is reported.
In this study, we investigated the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of 0.96(K0.456Na0.536)Nb0.95Sb0.05-0.04Bi0.5(Na0.82K0.18)0.5ZrO3 (KNNS-BNKZ) ceramics based on one-step and two-step sintering processes. One-step sintering led to significant abnormal grain (AG) growth at temperatures above 1,085 ℃. With increasing sintering temperature, piezoelectric and dielectric properties were enhanced, resulting in a high d33 = 506 pC/N for one-step specimen sintered at 1,100 ℃ (one-step 1,100 ℃ specimen). However, for one-step 1,115 ℃ specimen, a slight decrease in d33 was observed, emphasizing the importance of a high tetragonal (T) phase fraction for superior piezoelectric properties. Achieving a relative density above 84 % for samples sintered by the one-step sintering process was challenging. Conversely, two-step sintering significantly improved the relative density of KNNS-BNKZ ceramics up to 96 %, attributed to the control of AG nucleation in the first step and grain growth rate control in the second step. The quantity of AG nucleation was affected by the duration of the first step, determining the final microstructure. Despite having a lower T phase fraction than that of the one-step 1,100 ℃ specimen, the two-step specimen exhibited higher piezoelectric coefficients (d33 = 574 pC/N and kp = 0.5) than those of the one-step 1,100 ℃ specimen due to its higher relative density. Performance evaluation of magnetoelectric composite devices composed of one-step and two-step specimens showed that despite having a higher g33, the magnetoelectric composite with the one-step 1,100 ℃ specimen exhibited the lowest magnetoelectric voltage coefficient, due to its lowest kp. This study highlights the essential role of phase fraction and relative density in enhancing the performance of piezoelectric materials and devices, showcasing the effectiveness of the two-step sintering process for controlling the microstructure of ceramic materials containing volatile elements.
To fabricate a multi-layered piezoelectrics/electrodes structure, the piezoelectrics should be sintered at the temperature lower than $950^{\circ}C$ to use the silver electrode, which is cheaper than the electrodes containing noble metals such as Pd and Pt. Therefore, in this study, we modified the composition of $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$-based material as $(Pb_{0.98}Cd_{0.02})(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.25}Zr_{0.35}Ti_{0.4}O_3$ to lower the sintering temperature and to improve the piezoelectric properties. Small amount of $MnCO_3$, $SiO_2$, and $Pb_3O_4$ were also added to lower the sintering temperature of the ceramic. The prepared raw powders were mixed by using a ball mill for 24 hours. And then the mixed powders were calcinated for 2 hours at $800^{\circ}C$. The calcinated powders were again crushed with the ball mill for 72 hours. The final powders were pressed for making the shape of ${\emptyset}15\;mm$ disk. The disk-type samples were sintered at temperature range of $850{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. The crystal phases of the sintered specimens were perovskite structure without secondary phases. All of the measured electrical properties such as electromechanical coupling coefficients ($k_p$), mechanical quality factors ($Q_m$), and piezoelectric charge constants ($d_{33}$) were decreased with decreasing the sintering temperatures. The electrical properties measured at the sample sintered at $950^{\circ}C$ were 54% of $k_p$, 503 of $Q_m$, and 390 pC/N of $d_{33}$, respectively. These properties were considered to be fairly good for the application of multi-layered piezoelectric generators or actuators.
In this paper, an actively controlled aerostatic bearing is studied to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficients. The actively controlled aerostatic bearing is composed of aerostatic bearings, non-contact type of displacement sensors, piezoelectric actuators and controllers. The cylindrical capacitance sensor (CCS) is used as the displacement sensor. The reason for using CCS instead of the commercial gap sensor is that it can give us the pure error motion of the spindle because it removes the roundness error or the geometric errors in the spindle. The controller is designed by the state space equation and quadratic optimal control theory. The characteristic data of the actively controlled aerostatic bearing system in the frequency domain are presented and the stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing are mentioned. This paper shows the possibility to reduce the motion error up to 6000 rpm.
A smart hollow cylinder consisting of a host functionally graded elastic core layer and two surface homogeneous piezoelectric layers is presented in this paper. The bonding between the layers can be perfect or imperfect, depending on the parameters taken in the general linear spring-layer interface model. The effect of such weak interfaces on free vibration and steady-state response is then investigated. Piezoelectric layers at inner and outer surfaces are polarized axially or radially and act as a sensor and an actuator respectively. For a simply supported condition, the state equations with non-constant coefficients are obtained directly from the formulations of elasticity/piezoelasticity. An approximate laminated model is then introduced for the sake of solving the state equations conveniently. It is further assumed that the hollow cylinder is embedded in an elastic medium and is simultaneously filled with compressible fluid. The interaction between the structure and its surrounding media is taken into account. Numerical examples are finally given with discussions on the effect of some related parameters.
Physically responsive field-effect transistors (physi-FETs), which are sensitive to physical stimuli, have been studied for decades. However, the primary issue of separating responses by sensing materials from interferences by other subcomponents in a FET transducer under global physical stimuli has not been completely resolved. Recent challenges of structural design and employing smart materials with a large electro-physical coupling effect for flexible physi-FETs still remain. In this article, we propose directly integrating nanocomposites of barium titanate (BT) nanoparticles (NPs) and highly crystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) as gate dielectrics into flexible organic FETs to precisely separate and quantify tiny variations of remnant polarization caused by mechanical stimuli. Investigations under static stimuli resulted in first-reported giant-positive piezoelectric coefficients of d33 up to 960 pC/N, presumably due to significant contribution of the intrinsic piezoelectricity of BT NPs and P(VDF-TrFE) crystallites. This approach provides a general research direction, and not limited to physic-FETs.
In this study, to improve sintering condition, anisotropic Property(k$\_$t//k$\_$p/) of electromechanical coupling coefficients, and hydrostatic piezoelerlric constants d$\_$h/ and g$\_$h/, MnO$_2$impurity was added to the (Pb$\_$0.76/Ca$\_$0.24)[(Co$\_$$\frac{1}{2}$W$\_$$\frac{1}{2}$/)$\_$0.04/Ti$\_$0.96/]O$_3$ System ceramics for hydrophone. And the structural, electrical properties of them were investigated. As a results. tetragonality was decreased with MnO$_2$ additives and density was the highest value of 7.06(g/㎤) at H2-3 specimen. Electromechanical coupling coefficients of H2-3 specimen were k$\_$t/=49 and k$\_$p/ 0, which exibited the hightest hydrostatic piezoelectric constants of d$\_$h/=64.52[10$\^$-1/C/N] and g$\_$h/=35.92[10$\^$-3/ Vm/N].
A poled lead zirconate titanate (PZT) cube specimen is subjected to impulse-type compressive stress with increasing magnitude in parallel to the poling direction at four room and high temperatures. During the ferroelastic domain switching induced by the compressive stress, electric displacement in the poling direction and longitudinal and transverse strains are measured. Using the measured responses, linear material properties, namely, the piezoelectric and elastic compliance coefficients, are evaluated by a graphical method, and the effects of stress and temperature are analyzed. Finally, the dependency of the evaluated linear material properties on relative remnant polarization is analyzed and discussed.
