  • In optical pick-up, optical components such as objective lens, collimator, mirror, laser diode and photo diode are mounted on the pick-up base. These components must keep their original position during operation for proper transmittance of information from laser diode to optical disk and back to photo diode. However, micro thermal deformation of pick-up base which is induced by thermal environment during operation can deteriorate the performance of optical pick-up. Therefore, it is important to measure and analyze the thermal deformation behavior of pick-up base under thermal environment. In the present study, a measurement system using holographic interferometry was designed to measure micro thermal deformation of pick up base. The measurement system was verified by using the deformation of cantilever with prescribed motion actuated by PZT with 1 nm resolution. Interferometric measurement was compared quantitatively with that induced by PZT actuator. Finally, micro thermal deformation of pick-up base under actual thermal environment was measured using the present holographic interferometry and the results were analysed.

  • In order to modify flexible mode frequencies, finite element analysis is applied for a lens-holder in pick-up actuator. Several design parameters like shape and local dimension of a lens-holder were selected adequately and sensitivities of the design variables for vibration modes were obtained by FE analysis and this result was used for updating FE model. A sensitivity matrix between the natural frequencies and the design variables was calculated by finite difference method. By comparing the calculated natural frequencies with target frequencies, modification of the design variables was acquired and used for improving FE model. Calculated natural frequencies after several iterations by FE analysis coincided with target frequencies and the errors between them were minimized.

  • In order to produce high-quality optical components, aspheric lenses have been widely applied in recent years. An aspheric lens consists of aspheric surfaces instead of spherical ones, which causes difficulty in the design process as well as the manufacturing procedure. Although injection molding is widely used to fabricate optical lenses owing to its high productivity, there remains lots of difficulty to determine appropriate mold design factors and injection molding parameters. In the injection molding fields, computer simulation has been effectively applied to analyze processes based on the shell analysis so far. Considering the geometry of optical lenses, however, numerical analysis based on solid elements has been reported as more reliable approach than shell -based one. The present work covers three-dimensional injection molding simulation using MP1/Flow3D and relevant deformation analysis of an injection molded plastic lens based on solid elements. Numerical analysis has been applied to the injection molding processes of an aspheric lens for a photo pick-up device. The reliability of the proposed approach has been verified in comparison with the experiments.

  • In the integral imaging system for 3D display, the elemental image size is closely related to the several variables, such as the size of elemental lens, the distance between elemental lens and elemental image, etc., on the pick up system. We have analyzed the geometric relation between the variables. In addition, we have investigated the integrated image variation for the individual and whole conversion of the size of the elemental images, different from in pick up process, and presented experimental results.

  • In this paper, the optical pick-up used for general audio/video players having more market share than the others is designed with 4-wire suspension type actuator and the hologram laser diode which laser diode, photo diode, beam splitter, and grating lens are integrated in. This optical pick-up is designed in very simple optical system with the characteristics of hologram laser diode. Thus, it has high productivity, the number of the parts is reduced, and also the shape of the assembling parts becomes simple.

  • Aspheric pick-up lenses are increasingly used in consumer products such as computer and multimedia, as their mass production has become possible owing to the injection molding process. However still much work needs to be done for more effective manufacture of aspheric lenses, one area of which is the in-line inspection of produced lenses. In this paper, we present a lateral-shearing interferometer that has specially been designed to have a high immunity to external vibration and atmospheric disturbance. The interferometer comprises four prisms. They are directly attached to each other using an immersion oil so that relative sliding motions between the prisms are allowed. Their relative displacement can readily generate necessary lateral-shearing and phase-shifting to determine the wavefront of the beam collimated by the lens under inspection. A special phase-measuring algorithm of arbitrary-bucket is adopted to compensate the phase-shifting error caused by the thickness reduction in the immersion oil. Zernike polynomial fitting has done for determinating quantitative aberration of aspheric pick-up lenses. The interferometer built in this work is robust to external mechanical vibration and atmospheric disturbance so that experimental results show that it has a repeatability of less than λ/100.

  • The design method that the structure of double actuators of read-only or read-writable DVD optical pick-up of high density can be compact into the structure of one actuator, is proposed. The designed actuator has the structure of the shaft sliding type in which the moving part can be rotated about the shaft accord to a used optical disc and an objective lens can be switched, and is suspended with magnetic spring. In this actuator, Coulomb's friction is used as damping force and the moving part is designed by finite element method so that the second natural vibration mode can not occur within the servo band. The mock-up of the actuator designed in this paper is made, and its dynamic characteristics is measured and estimated.
