  • The physico-chemical characteristics and seasonal variations of phytoplankton community were investigated in the Paksil and Jungyang marshes. Water and phytoplankton samples for analyses were collected monthly from April 2002 to March 2003. A total of 421 taxa of phytoplankton belonging to eight classes identified. The number of taxa was highest in Bacillariophyceae, followed by Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Dinophyceae, Xanthophyceae and Cryptophyceae. The standing crops ranged from 1.25 ${\times}$ $10^6$ to 5.85 ${\times}$ $10^6$ cells ${\cdot}l^{-1}$ in Paksil marsh and 0.25 to 9.63 ${\times}$ $10^6$ cells ${\cdot}l^{-1}$ in Jungyang marsh. The highest algal density at Paksil marsh was recorded in October during the high development of Chlorococcales while the lowest value occured in July. In the Jungyang marsh, the maximum algal density was recorded in October when Cryptomonas sp. and Mallomonas sp. accounted for 64% to total cell numbers and the lowest cell density was observed in January due to the decrease of Chlorophyceae. The dominant species were represented by Euglena proxima, Trachelomonas oblonga, Trachelomonas volvocina of Euglenophyceae, Dictyosphaerium pulchellum, Monoraphidium griffithii, Oocystis parva of Chlorophyceae, Dinobryon sertularia, Kephyrion rubri-claustri of Chrysophyceae, Achnanthes minutissima of Bacillariophyceae and Cryptomonas sp. of Cryptophyceae in the Paksil and Jungyang marshes. Phytoplankton diversity(H’) and dominance index varied rather irregularly throughout the sampling period but they were significantly correlated. The highest diversity(H’Paksil = 3.68, H’Jungyang = 3.63) coincided with the lowest values of dominance(DPaksil = 0.05, DJungyang = 0.05)

  • Seasonal investigations were conducted to determine the major aquatic environmental factors and the variation of phytoplankton in Pyeongtaek Reservoir in March, June, September, and December 2000. Heavy rainfall mainly occurs from late June to mid-September, and water quality of reservoir was high in the influent zone of stream and riverine zone of reservoir. The biomass of phytoplankton was related to aquatic environmental factors. In particular, its value increased where nutrient concentration was high. Likewise, the increase of turbidity was found to have anthropogenic effects on the varying quantity of phytoplankton. The phytoplankton composition in quantitative survey identified into 43 genera and 71 species. Species numbers of Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, and Chlorophyceae accounted for 17%, 15%, and 49%, respectively, with the remainder constituting less than 3-7%. The distribution of such phyla also significantly varied according to seasons, accounting for 25%, 37%, 61%, and 14% in March, June, September, and December, respectively. Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae were observed throughout the year, while Cyanophyceae proliferated in June and September. Euglenophyceae and Dinophyceae were prevalent in March and September, while Cryptophyceae occurred in March and December. The succession trend of phytoplankton showed the maximum cell density was followed by Bacillariophyceae (6.8$\times$$10^3$ cells ${\cdot}$ml)$\rightarrow$ Chlorophyceae (3.7$\times$$10^3$ cells ${\cdot}$ml)$\rightarrow$Cyanophyceae (1.3$\times$$10^4$ cells ${\cdot}$ml)$\rightarrow$Cryptophyceae (1.2$\times$$10^3$ cells ${\cdot}$ml). The cell density was the highest in the upstream. Dominant species were composed of Aulacoseira ambigua, Stephanodiscus hantzschii f. tenuis of Bacillariophyceae, Anabaena spiroides var. crassa, Microcystis aeruginosa, Oscillatoria amphibia of Cyanophyceae, Actinastrum hantzschii var. fluviatile, Pediastrum duplex var. reticulatum of Chlorophyceae, Euglena gracilis, Trachelomonas spp. of Euglenophyceae, and Chroomonas spp., Cryptomonas spp. of Cryptophyceae. As a results, seasonal variation of phytoplankton in Pyeongtaek Reservoir was evident in spite of inflow the high concentration of nutrients from watershed streams, because hydrological control and anthropogenic disturbance in reservoir were found to have major effects on the retention time of water.

  • Wangdol-cho, located 23 km offshore of Hupo in southwest of East Sea, is underwater rock floor, called to Wangdol-Am or Wangdol-Jam and has three tops as Mat-Jam, Middle-Jam and Set-Jam. The composition, abundance, diversity and community structure were investigated in winter and summer in 2002 around Wangdol-cho. The temperature around the Northwest and Southeast part of Wangdol-cho was influenced by the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) and East Korea Warm Current (EKWC), respectively. Nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentration were higher at the top of Wangdol-cho than other area. A total of 41 genera and 78 species of phytoplankton were identified. The average cell abundance of phytoplankton in winter and summer were $286{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3,\;432{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3$ respectively. The largest community was Bacillariophyta containing 52 taxa. The dominant species were Lauderia anulata and Coscinodiscus spp. which preferred cold water in winter. In contrast, warm water species such as Rhizosolenia stolterfothii and Ceratium spp. were dominant in summer. The average species diversity index of phytoplankton in winter was higher than that in summer. According to dominant species and standing crops, phytoplankton community resulted in a clear separation. One group was western area, which showed low density, and the other was eastern area, which showed the higher density. The abundance and species composition of phytoplankton. were affected by topological characteristics around Wangdol-cho.

  • The stream has various environments and they are serving as main habitats of aquatic organisms. The distribution of phytoplankton is affected by water environment, especially pH, nitrogen and phosphorus. To reveal the relationship between phytoplankton distribution and water environment, we measured pH, $NO_3{^-}$ and $PO{_4}^{3-}$ concentration, and abundance of phytoplankton at 10 sites in the upper stream of Dorim-cheon. pH value ranged 5.05 to 7.56. $NO_3{^-}$ and $PO{_4}^{3-}$ concentrations ranged 0.4 ~ 4.9ppm and 0.02 ~ 0.99ppm, respectively. A point source of $NO_3{^-}$ was Seoul National University but concentration was not high and dropped to normal range at 400m downstream. $NO_3{^-}/PO{_4}^{3-}$ ratio ranged 28 to 152 except site 4 (0.4) where was affected by $PO{_4}^{3-}$ point source. Water pH, $NO_3{^-}$ and $PO{_4}^{3-}$ concentrations increased with downstream and were related to the input of irrigation water from Han-river between site 5 and 6. Bacillariophyceae alge dominated this stream. Phytoplankton density increased abruptly at downstream of site 5. In general, phytoplankton density did not increase until the $NO_3{^-}$ concentration of 3.5ppm and $PO{_4}^{3-}$ concentration of 0.07ppm. Phytoplankton density was low at sites where $NO_3{^-}/PO{_4}^{3-}$ ratio was larger than 50.

  • In order to elucidate chatracteristics of water quality and seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton community in Kyungpo lake, the weekly variation of algal population and 11 environmental factors were investigated from March 1998 to February 1999. A total 121 species of phytoplankton belonged to 57 genera, 4 genera 7 species of the Euglenophyceae, 1 genera 2 species of the Chrysophyceae, 2 genera 3 species of the Cryptophyceae, 1 genera 1 species of the Dinophyceae, 6 genera 9 species of the Cyanophyceae, 28 genera 78 species of the Bacillario-phyceae and 15 genera 21 species of the Chlorophyceae, was identified. Cryptomonas sp., Chamydomonas sp., Nitzschia frustulum, Oscillatoria sp., Lyngbya sp, and Dictyosphaerium pulchellum occurred successively as dominant phytoplankton species from March 1998 to February 1999. Density of phytoplankton cell number showed the peak in early April when Chlamydomoas sp. was dominated. The diversity index of phytoplankton community showed low values in the dominating period of Cryptomonas sp. and Chlamydomonas sp. The concentration of chlorophyll a fluctuated between 1.09 and 107.7$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$. Water temperature, salinity, DO, conduc tivity and SS were ranged 0.5-27.8$^{\circ}C$, 2.8-25.2 ppt, 4.62-19.21 mgO$_2$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, 5.33-34.76 mS/cm and 0.017-0.184 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, respectively. Annual means of Secchi disc transparency was 36cm and thai of pH value was 8.5. The concentrations of PO$_4$-P was ranged 0.0012-0.077 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$ , and showed high value from August to October. The concentrations of NO$_2$-N, NO$_3$-N and NH$_4$-N was ranged 0.0011-0.1 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, 0.074-3.33mgㆍ1$^{-1}$ and 0.0024-0.259 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, respectively. Among environmental factors, water temperature was negatively correlated with DO, salinity and conductivity, DO was positively correlated with salinity and conductivity. Chlorophyll a, one of the indicies of eutropication in lake, was negatively correlated with NH$_4$-N. The cell density of Cryptomonas sp., which was the most dominant species in this lake, was negatively correlated with transparency. • Phytoplankton communities, with emphasis on picoplankton and nanoplankton, were investigated in Gamak Bay, South Korea, where freshwater input and coastal water intrusion shape ecosystem functions. Shellfish farms and fish farms are located in the inner bay and outer bay, respectively, and tides translocate uneaten food and urine production from aquaculture farms toward the inner bay. Water masses were distinctly different based on a significantly different density between the surface and bottom layer and among three water masses, including the inner bay, outer bay, and Yeosu Harbor. Phytoplankton communities were quantified using flow cytometry and size-fractionated chlorophyll-a (chl-a) was measured. Salinity was a principal variable separating phytoplankton communities between the surface and bottom layer, whereas Si(OH)4 controlled the communities in the inner bay, and NH4+ and PO43- governed the outer bay communities. While phycocyanin-containing (PC) cyanobacteria dominated in the outer bay, phycoerythrin-containing (PE) cyanobacteria dominance occurred with cryptophyte dominance, indicating that nutrients affected the distribution of pico- and nanoplankton and that cryptophytes potentially relied on a mixotrophic mode by feeding on PE cyanobacteria. Interestingly, picoeukaryotes and eukaryotes larger than 10 ㎛ were mostly responsible for the ecological niche in the western region of the bay. Given that chl-a levels have historically declined, our study highlights the potential importance of increased small phytoplankton in Gamak Bay. Particularly, we urge an examination of the ecological role of small phytoplankton in the food supply of cultivated marine organisms.

  • To investigate the community structures and the their seasonal variation of phytoplankton and zooplankton, a study was conducted at 6 selected stations during the period from April 1999 to October 2000 in the marine ranching ground off Tongyeong. One hundred ninety species of phytoplankton were identified, including 146 diatoms, 38 dinoflagellates, 4 silicoflagellates and 2 euglenophytes. Phytoplankton standing crops varied extensively by months and stations, ranging from $3.0{\times}10^4\;cells/l\;to\;1.0{\times}10^6\;cells/l.$. The dominant species varied from the vertical distribution as well as seasonal changes. In April and July 1999, Skeletonema costatum and Ceratium fusus were predominant in both the surface and the bottom water columns. Leptocylindrus danicus was the dominant species in April and June 2000, and Thalassiosira spp. were also predominant in bottom waters in June 2000. Pseudonitzschia pungens and Chaetoceros spp. were the dominant species at both surface and near bottom waters in August and October 2000, respectively. Zooplankton abundance was comparatively high in April and July in 1999, and April, June, and October in 2000, but extremely low in November 1999. The density of dominant zooplankton was higher in 2000 than in 1999. Copepods were the most predominant group except for July 1999 when the bivalve larvae showed extremely high abundance. Acartia omorii and Oithona similis were the dominant or subdominant copepod species mainly in April 2000, and June/July, while O. davisae and O. plumifera had peaks in August and October 2000. Corycaeus affinis and Paracalanus sp. also showed higher peaks in April and June (or July), even though they occurred in all sampling time. Centropages abdominalis occurred abundantly only in April 1999. Oikopleura dioica, a gelatinous zooplankton, was another important zooplankton, showing high density in all samples except in July 1999.

  • Algal overgrowth in shrimp culture ponds can affect the quality of the aquatic environment, thereby adversely affecting the shrimp and causing economic losses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variation in phytoplankton composition in intensive shrimp ponds in Bac Lieu province, Vietnam. Phytoplankton samples were collected in three black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) ponds and three whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) ponds. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS and canonical correlation analysis softwares. In total, 75 species of phytoplankton were recorded in black tiger shrimp ponds and 64 species in whiteleg shrimp ponds. Diatoms had the highest species diversity with 29-30 species (39%-47%), followed by green algae with 9-19 species (14%-25%); species numbers of other phyla varied from 5-12 (8%-16%). The total number of phytoplankton species throughout the study varied from 34-50 species. Algal density was relatively high and ranged from 497,091-2,229,500 ind./L and 1,301,134-2,237,758 ind./L in black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp ponds, respectively. The diatom density tended to increase during the final stage of the production cycle in black tiger shrimp ponds. Blue-green algae and dinoflagellates also increased in abundance at the end of the cycle, which can affect shrimp growth. Diatoms were significantly positively correlated with pH, salinity, total ammonia nitrogen, and nitrate (NO3-) concentrations (p < 0.05). Blue-green algae and dinoflagellates were positively correlated with salinity, phosphate (PO43-), and NO3-. Algal species diversity was lower in the whiteleg shrimp ponds than in the black tiger shrimp ponds. Several dominant algal genera were recorded in the shrimp ponds, including Nannochloropsis, Gyrosigma, Chaetoceros, Alexandrium, and Microcystis. The results of this study provide basic data for further investigations, and they contribute to the management of algae in brackish-water shrimp ponds.

  • In this study, we compared the spatio-temporal differences of phytoplankton communities among 4 lakes in the Boseong River basin. Field research was conducted quarterly from 2014 to 2017 for this study. A total of 345 species of phytoplankton were identified including 107 Bacillariophyceae, 175 Chlorophyceae, 27 Cyanophyceae and 36 other phytoplankton taxa. Lake Boseong showed higher species numbers and density of phytoplankton than other lakes (Dunn's test, P<0.01). Bacillariophyceae such as Asterionella formosa, Aulacoseira granulata, Fragilaria crotonensis was dominated in most research periods, whereas Scenedesmus ecornis and Coelastrum cambricum belonging to Chlorophyceae were dominant species on August. The self-organizing map (SOM) classified 3 clusters with 10 × 7 grid and showed spatio-temporal variation of phytoplankton communities based on significant difference among each clusters. Total 31 species of phytoplankton were chosen as a indicator species using indicator species analysis(ISA) and reflected seasonal phytoplankton succession and diversity and density of phytoplankton according to nutrient concentration. Water temperature, Secchi depth, conductivity and DO were identified as important factors affecting the differences of phytoplankton communities in the studied lakes in Boseong River basin using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS).
