The discovery of drugs on the treatment of rhinitis and allergic disease is a very important subject in human heath. The Shinbijen has been used for centruries as a traditional medicine in Korea and is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect. However, its specific mechanism of action is still unknown. In this report, we investigated the effect of hot water extract from Shinbijen on OVA-mediated allergic reaction and studied its possible mechanism of action using fluorescenc microscopy and RT-PCR analysis. Shinbijen inhibited OVA-induced rhinitis, total cells in BFA and lymphocyte related to inflammation in mice. Shinbijen decreased immuno response, which activated by IL-4, COX-2 and iNOS expression. in tissue. Shinbijen reduced inflammatory molecule release from mice lung tissue and CD4/CD8 cells activated by cardiac blood. Shinbijen decreased OVA-induced IL-4 and iNOS levels in pulmonary alveoli. Our findings provide evidence that Shinbijen inhibits OVA-induced allergic reactions, and also demonstrate the involvement of inflammation and allergic disease in these effects.

Activated mast cells play pivotal roles in allergic and non-allergic inflammatory responses through the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamin, cysteinyl leukotriens, pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as chemokine. We tested whether YHJST, which is clinically prescribed for the treatment of various inflammatory disease including allergic disease, modulate inflammatory reactions in activated mast cells. YHJST decreased the release of histamine and b-hexosamidase in pholbol-12-myristate 13-acetate and/or calcium ionophore A23187 stimulated HMC-1 and RBL-2H3 cells, respectively. Further, the gene expressions of tumor necrosis factor-a, IL-6 and IL-8 were significantly reduced by YHJST. YHJST suppressed powerful induction of NF-kB promoter-mediated luciferase activity. Taken together, these data suggested that YHJST showed it's anti-inflammatory effects through the down-regulation of mast cell activation.
The lack of an effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD) stems primarily from incomplete understanding of AD's causes. A rapidly growing number of scientific reports highlight important roles played by peripheral infections and intestinal bacterial flora in pathological and physiological functions involving the microbiome-intestine-brain axis. The microbiome controls basic aspects of the central nervous system (CNS), immunity, and behavior, in health and disease. Changes in the density and composition of the microbiome have been linked to disorders of the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems, including mood changes, depression, increased susceptibility to stressors, and autistic behaviors. There is no doubt that in patients with AD, restoration of the intestinal microbiome to a composition reminiscent of that found in healthy adult humans will significantly slow the progression of neurodegeneration, by ameliorating inflammatory reactions and/or amyloidogenesis. In the near future, better understanding of bidirectional communication between the brain and microbiota will allow the development of functional diets using specific probiotic bacteria.
Biocompatible polysaccharide coating technology can be a promising solution to overcome unexpected diseases caused by inflammatory reactions of metallic biomaterials (e.g., stent restenosis, etc.). However, due to their inherent hydrophilicity, it is difficult to maintain the coating layer for a long time in the physiological wet-environment. Herein, catechol functionalized hyaluronic acid was synthesized and introduced to the polymeric stent (polylactic acid) as the adhesive biocoating material. Surprisingly, even with the low degree of substitution of catechol (1.26%), a significant improvement in the underwater stability was observed, confirmed by capillary experiments and spectroscopic analysis. Our results may provide an insight into the positive role of catechol molecular adhesive group in the in-vivo stability of biocoating materials.
In 2021, a total of 27 bacterial strains were isolated from soil, tree bark, moss, wetland, sea sediment, tidal flat, seawater and seaweed within Republic of Korea. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence (>98.7% sequence similarity), these isolates were assigned to the class Alphaproteobacteria as unrecorded species in Korea. The 27 strains were classified into the 10 families: Maricaulaceae of the order Caulobacterales; Brucellaceae, Methylobacteriaceae, Nitrobacteraceae and Rhizobiaceae of the order Hyphomicrobiales; Micropepsaceae of the order Micropepsales; Rhodobacteraceae of the order Rhodobacterales; Azospirillaceae of the order Rhodospirillales; and Erythrobacteraceae and Sphingomonadales of the order Sphingomonadaceae. There is no official report of these 27 species in Korea. Therefore, we report 27 isolates as unrecorded species, and described isolation sources, Gram-stain reactions, physiological and biochemical properties and morphologies of these strains.
Levan is a functional fructooligosaccharide that belongs to the class of fructans and displays a range of physiological and dietary benefits. Levansucrase, classified as a fructosyltransferase, catalyzes the synthesis of levan fructans through the transfer of d-fructosyl residues from sucrose. Recombinant levansucrase exhibits a significantly high level of expression and activity in E. coli, however, its industrial applicability is limited due to its relatively poor thermal stability. In this study, we generated six single mutants by targeting either the high flexibility regions (242-250) or the 382Glu residue within the -TEAP- motif, and further developed two double mutants featuring concurrent mutations encompassing both regions. We expressed multiple levansucrase mutant proteins in E. coli DH5α using site-directed mutagenesis and measured the enzymatic activity and thermal stability of each mutant by levan formation reactions. The E246Y mutant displayed half-time 5.02-fold and 1.89-fold higher at 55℃ and 56℃, respectively, when compared to the WT, whereas the E382L mutant exhibited a 1.06-fold enhancement in half-time at 55℃. Furthermore, E246Y/E382L exhibited 1.95-fold and 1.86-fold higher thermal stability at 55℃ and 56℃, respectively. These findings suggest the potential for the developed thermally stable levansucrases to be applied in industrial settings, highlighting the effectiveness of our targeted mutagenesis approach.

This study aims to optimize the appropriate concentration of fertilizers for Sageretia thea by analyzing growth performances (height and root collar diameter) and physiological characteristics (photosynthesis, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll fluorescence reaction). As fertilizer concentration was increased to 1.5 g·L-1, growth increased, but it decreased at 2.0 g·L-1 treatment. Root collar diameter growth was reduced because of higher fertilizer concentrations. Photosynthesis reactions showed the highest CO2 reaction curves, maximum photosynthesis rate, and maximum carboxylation rate in the 1.5 g·L-1 fertilizer treatment. The chlorophyll fluorescence reaction and SPAD values revealed that fertilizer treatment improves photosynthesis efficiency and robustness compared with untreated control. Therefore, the appropriate fertilizer concentration for producing good seedling quality of Sageretia thea is 1.0~1.5 g·L-1.
In this study, we assessed how participants represent various sensory stimuli experiences through behavioral ratings and physiological measurements. Utilizing intersubject correlation (ISC) analysis, we evaluated whether individuals' affective responses of dominance, arousal, and valence differed when stimuli of three modality conditions (auditory, visual, and haptic) were presented. ISC analyses were used to measure the similarities between one participant's responses and those of the others. To calculate the intersubject correlation, we divided the entire dataset into one subject and all other subject datasets and then correlated the two for all possible stimulus pair combinations. The results revealed that for dominance, ISCs of the visual modality condition were greater than the auditory modality condition, whereas, for arousal, the auditory condition was greater than the visual modality. Last, negative valence conditions had the greater consistency of the participants' reactions than positive conditions in each of the sensory modalities. When comparing modalities, greater ISCs were observed in haptic modality conditions than in visual and auditory modality conditions, regardless of the affective categories. We discussed three core affective representations of multiple modalities and proposed ISC analysis as a tool for examining differences in individuals' affective representations.
Climate change has emerged as a global problem, with frequent temperature increases, droughts, and floods, and it is predicted that it will have a great impact on the characteristics and productivity of crops. Cnidium officinale is used not only as traditionally used herbal medicines, but also as various industrial raw materials such as health functional foods, natural medicines, and living materials, but productivity is decreasing due to threats such as continuous crop damage and climate change. Therefore, this paper proposes a model that can predict the physiologically active ingredient index according to the climate change scenario of Cnidium officinale, a representative medicinal crop vulnerable to climate change. In this paper, data was first augmented using the CTGAN algorithm to solve the problem of data imbalance in the collection of environment information, physiological reactions, and physiological active ingredient information. Column Shape and Column Pair Trends were used to measure augmented data quality, and overall quality of 88% was achieved on average. In addition, five models RF, SVR, XGBoost, AdaBoost, and LightBGM were used to predict phenol and flavonoid content by dividing them into ground and underground using augmented data. As a result of model evaluation, the XGBoost model showed the best performance in predicting the physiological active ingredients of the sacrum, and it was confirmed to be about twice as accurate as the SVR model.

This study is intended to obtain a guideline for creating a therapeutic garden soundscape in a psychiatric hospital by analyzing the psychological and physiological effects of auditory components on mental patients. The subjects were 27 inpatients at a psychiatric institute located in Jeollabuk-do. They were recommended by their doctors and had been diagnosed with mild cases of schizophrenia. The survey was carried out in October 2011. With regard to the study, the subjects listened to single sounds(the sound of flowing water, birdsong, wind chimes and music) and 4 sounds composed of some of these, and then Electroencephalography(EEG) and psychological effects were measured. The moving water sound was perceived as pleasing and revitalizing and the birdsong as sonorous and delightful. When designing a healing garden in a psychiatric hospital, the vitality of sound should be considered. In comparison to other single sounds, water sounds were highly preferred and had greater effects on psychological vitality. Music sounds had a significant effect on enhancing tranquility while water sounds affected on both psychological vitality and tranquillity. When comparing single sounds with combined sounds, single sounds such as running water for vitality and music for tranquility had a greater psychological effect than combined sounds. In terms of combined sound preferences, the combination of water and bird sounds had higher preference rates. Generally, combined sounds including water tended to have higher preference rates. The physiological effects of single sounds showed that music had a greater therapeutic effect than natural sounds such as water sounds and birdsong in promoting tranquility. As for combined sounds adopted to enhance physiological tranquility, it is most appropriate to combine music and birdsong or music and water sounds. However, a single music sound is more effective than combined sounds. Overall, analyses of both psychological and physiological reactions showed music and water sounds to be most calming while water sounds promoted the greatest vitality.
