  • Methods of evaluating the physiological activity of the living body are EEG, EOG, Heart rate, and Rectal temperature, etc. In the study of Hagiwara and Araki(1993), they found positive correlations among performance test, physiological measurement, and subjective feeling measurement. Human alertness of pilot directly influences on the flight performance that accomplishes a lot of vigilance task and procedure execution in flight. Accordingly, this paper deals with the quantitative and objective performance test based on tracking error and reaction time by means of the new computer test program into which the perception-motion system of human beings is applies. Throughout this experiment using performance thst, the results suggest that performance capability in state of sleep deprivation 2 hours and alcoholic 0.05 .apaprox. 0.06% in blood were more impaired than one in a normal state, and they further showed statistically significant differences between them, which were influenced by impairment factors of body regulation and pilot's grade. We also obtained the prediction value and the 95% confidence interval of tracking error and reaction time at the normal state for the purpose of distinguishing performance capability between the normal state and the abnormal state. And it is ecpected that the evaluation of human alertness using performance test will be applied to the quantitative assessment of an each pilot's realistic consciousness/attention, and will lead a flight commander to the accurate decision of mission approval prior to a flight.

  • 인삼(Panax ginseng C.A.

  • To compare heart rate, $O_2$ uptake, $Vo_2$ ($O_2$ consumption), blood pressure (systolic, diastolic), reaction time, stability, flicker fusion value during 4 load levels with Rs (self-paced respiration) and Rp (paced respiration), 4 subjects participated in this experiment 1 hour/day, 6 days/week for 9 weeks. The cycle of Rp is 6 sec. (inspiration: 3 sec. & expiration: 3 sec.) Implications of the results are discussed in terms of the change in the physiological responses and human performance by the respiratory pattern. The results are as follows, 1. The changing magnitude of heart rate with Rp was larger than with Rs and the variance during load level 4 was significant. 2. The $Vo_2$ with Rp was smaller than with Rs and maximal $O_2$ uptake given load levels with Rp occurred and for two subjects, it significantly moved from low load level to high load level. 3. The changing magnitude of blood pressure was not consistent but the systolic pressure with Rp was smaller at rest than with Rs. 4. The score of reaction time test and stability test with Rp was better than with Rs.

  • Aircraft and the three-dimensional environment in which they operate are not user-friendly for human beings. As a result, maintaining the proficiencies necessary to safely and efficiently fly an airplane are difficult, and costly. The physiological and emotional status of the human element remains crucial in maintaining safe performance by all crew members. In the study of Hagiwara et al.(1993). they called the physiological and emotional status of the human element into the human alertness or physiological activity and stress, fatigue, circadian rhythm, alcohol. smoking, and self-medication are known the major factors that deteriorate the human alertness. Accordingly. this paper deals with the quantitative and objective performance test based on tracking error and reaction time by means of the new computer test program into which the perception-motion system of human beings is applied. Throughout this experiment using performance test, the results suggest that performance capability in state of sleep deprivation 2 hours and alcoholic 0.05~0.06% in blood were more impaired than one in a normal state, and they further showed statistically significant differences between them, which were influenced by impairment factors of body regulation and pilot's grade. • The aim of this study was to measure effects of the following items to pain and pain behavior reaction in patients with chronic orofacial pain. Items that contribute to the first factor(Environmental Influences) measure environmental sources of information that may affect illness behavior; Second factro(Loss of Control) measure appraisals and attributions perceived to influence personal views aobut pain; Third factor(Health Care Avoidance) measures a variety of avoidant behaviors; Fouth factor(Past and Current Experiences) measures experiences with treatment); Fifth factor(Physiological Responsivity) measures physiological parameters that are experienced in association with pain; Sixth factor(Thoughts of Disease Progression) measures thoughts regarding the etiology and progression of disease in relation to pain. 150 patients that were consist of 40 male and 110 female were participated in this study. The obtained results of this study were as follows : 1. Environmental influences and loss of control scales were recorded high score in patients with chronic orofacial pain 2. "Physician's descriptions of what your pain will be like" and "Physician's facial expression when they ask about your pain" items from the environmental influences were recorded high score. These results indicated that responsibility of doctro is very important to the pain reaction behavior of patients. Also, items from thoughts regarding the etiology and progression of disease in relation to pain influenced to the pain reaction. 3. There were significant defferences on the "nurses' descriptions of what you pain will be like", "physician's and nurses' facial expression when they ask about your pain", "TV and radio", and "Literature" items from the environmental influences between male and female patients. 4. There were no significant differences on the each scale between arthrogenous and combitnation group and significant correlated with all 6 scales.

  • Cold and Heat pattern identification(CHPI) in traditional East Asian medicine(TEAM) is one of the major indicator to distinguish characteristics of disease and to determine treatment method. Basic parameters to determine CHPI include the pulse rate, respiration rate, and pulse power. Studies to associate physiological responses of human body by cold stress(CS) with CHPI in TEAM were rarely done so far. This study aims to explore the effects of cold stress on pulse signal via a feasibility study for three subjects and investigate some indices which can reflect autonomic nerve reaction(ANR). We measured radial pulse signals and respiration signal of the investigated subjects before the CS, during the CS which continues for 5 minutes, and immediately after the CS, respectively. Finally, we analyzed the pulse rate (P), respiration rate (R), pulse power, pulse depth, and pulse rate per respiration (P/R ratio). As a result, the P/R ratio showed a consistently decreasing tendency through the CS stimulation process, while other parameters behaved more complex and in subject-specific ways. It implies that, among candidate parameters, the P/R ratio is a simple but the most probable parameter that can be used as the ANR indicator. This result is also consistent with the theory in TEAM scripts, in which the P/R ratio is predicted to be a direct indicator for the CHPI. This pilot study shows that P/R ratio can be more appropriately associated with the ANR than heart rate or respiration rate alone. Extensive studies will be necessary to verify or confirm the P/R ratio as an appropriate and well defined parameter for ANR.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate effect of driver's cognitive distraction on driver's physiological state and driving performance, and then to determine parameters appropriate for detecting the cognitive distraction. Background: Driver distraction is a major cause of traffic accidents and poses a serious threat to traffic safety due to ever increasing use of in-vehicle information systems and mobile phones during driving. Cognitive distraction, among four different types of distractions, prevents a driver from processing traffic information correctly and adapting to change in surround vehicle behavior in time. However, the cognitive distraction is more difficult to detect because it normally does not involve significant change in driver behavior. Method: A full-scale driving simulator was used to create virtual driving environment and situations. Participants in the experiment drove the driving simulator in three different conditions: attentive driving with no secondary task, driving and conducting secondary task of adding numbers, and driving and conducting secondary task of conversing with an experimenter. Parameters related with driver's physiological state and driving performance were measured and analyzed for their change. Results: The experiment results show that driver's cognitive distraction, induced by secondary task of addition and conversation during driving, increased driver's cognitive workload, and indeed brought change in driver's physiological state and degraded driving performance. Conclusion: The galvanic skin response, pupil size, steering reversal rate, and driver reaction time are shown to be statistically significant for detecting cognitive distraction. The appropriate combination of these parameters will be used to detect the cognitive distraction and estimate risk of traffic accidents in real-time for a driver distraction warning system.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of hand reflexology on the physiological.emotional responses and immunity of the patients with chronic illness. This study looked specifically at patients with chronic renal failure(CRF) and cancer patients. Method: This study was designed as a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group pre and post test. Subjects were 54 patients who received dialysis and chemotherapy in one hospital. Thirty-one patients were assigned to the experimental group and 23 to the control group. The hand reflexology was applied to both hands of the experiment group for ten minutes each time, 5 times during three days. For data collection, physiological lab levels, immune cells of blood and questionnaires for emotional responses were measured before and after the program. Result: BT of the experiment group was decreased significantly on both of the 1st and the 5th application. PR & BP were decreased significantly on the 1st times, but not 5th times. Hb levels of the experimental group were significantly increased. And emotional responses, vigor and mood scores of the experiment group were significantly increased. B cell & CD19 were increased significantly on the experiment group. Suppressor T cell and NK cell showed significant decrease after the program, but no significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: We have found that the hand reflexology helps the chronic patients to improve physiological.emotional responses and the immune reaction. Through this result, the hand reflexology is effective as a intervention of psychoneuroimmunologic function.

  • RecA protein can promote strand assimilation, homologous pairing, and strand exchange. All these reactions require DNA-dependent ATP hydrolysis by recA protein, and the activities of recA protein are affected by the ionic environment. In this experiment, DNA-dependent ATPase activity showed different sensitivity to anionic species. ATP hydrolysis and strand exchange were relatively sensitive to salt in the reactions with NaCl, strongly inhibited at 100 mM NaCl. However, the inhibition by sodium acetate or sodium glutamate was not observed at 50∼100 mM concentration. Addition of sodium glutamate to the standard reaction condition increased the apparent efficiency of ATP hydrolysis during strand exchange. The condition including 50∼100 mM sodium-glutamate might be similar to the physiological condition.
