  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the pain and the weather. One hundred ninety three patients treated for pain were recruited for this study. All subjects completed a 8-item weather and pain questionnaire to find out whether the pain are related to change in the weather, Of all subjects, 126 patients(65.3%) believed that change in the weather affected their pain. Of theses 126 patients, 85 patients(67.5%) reported that their pain was affected before weather changes, 44 patients(34.9%) stated that their pain was affected during weather changes. Damp/Rainy(n=91, 72.2%) and cold(n=60, 47.6%) conditions were mostly considered to have influence on pain. Of all subjects, 125 patients(64.8%) believed that change in the weather affected their mood. In the female group, a tendency to have pain or mood sensitivity to change in the weather was significantly higher than the male group(p=0.006, p=0.003) In the non-religious group, a tendency to have pain or mood sensitivity to change in the weather was significantly higher than the religious group(p=0.006, p=0.004). Of the pain sensitive group to change in the weather, 97 patients(77.0%) reported that they also have mood sensitivity to change in the weather(p=0.000). In the pain or mood sensitive group to change in the weather, their pain intensity(VAS) was significantly higher than the other group(p=0.000, p=0.021). The results of this survey give support to the idea that most patients with pain believe that weather has an important impact on their pain. Further investigations are needed to identify the mechanisms involved in the effects of weather changes on pain.

  • The binding interactions between human serum albumin (HSA) and the edible food dyes amaranth, tartrazine and sunset yellow have been studied. Intrinsic association constants and the free energy changes associated with dye-protein binding at physiological pH for amaranth and tartrazine, and at two different pH values for sunset yellow have been calculated from ultrafiltration data. The temperature dependence $(20-40^{\circ}C)$ of the intrinsic association constants at pH 7.4 for amaranth-HSA and tartrazine-HSA mixtures have been measured, from which a plot of the van't Hoff isochore exhibits a marked change in slope around $30^{\circ}C$ indicating a possible change in protein conformation. The number of dye binding sites on HSA is reported for all the above conditions. HSA-ligand binding enthalpies have been used in conjunction with the N-B transitional binding enthalpy for HSA, to calculate the enthalpy for the N-B transition when ligands are bound with the protein.

  • Structural changes of the vitelline envelopes during oogenesis of a polychaete, Nectoneanthes oxypoda, were examined with a scanning electron micrscope. Oocytes grow in the same coelomic fluid to the final stage, but the surface appears to change in the structure during oogenesis. Projections, which were identified to be microvilli, change in shape, number and size. Short microvilli, which cover the surface of oocyte of $33{\mu}m$ diameter densely, grow in length, reaching a maximum at the stage of $73{\mu}m$. The number of microvilli increases with the stages of oogenesis, reaching a plateau at the stage of $82{\mu}m$. The observations suggest that control of material transport including yolk precursor proteins may be correlated with the structural changes in the microvilli.

  • To elucidate the preventive effect of oriental medicine Gami-Ondamtang(GO) on stress, we investigated the physiological change of rats which were applied immobilization stress. For immobilization stress, rats were placed in restrainer for 12 hours a day for 3 days. During application of stress, body weight of rats was measured. After sacrifice, 8 organs were taken for measurement of organ weight. Brain was sectioned into 4 parts that are Frontal Cortex, Corpus Striatum, Hypothalamus and Hippocampus. Each part was homogenated and its catecholamine and serotonin contents were measured with HPLC. In our study, stress mainly induced increase of concentration of neurotransmitters in brain without other significant physical change of rats. GO inhibited stress induced changes of neurotransmitter content in brain.

  • Thiocyanate space was determined in 23 bilaterally nephrectomized rabbits in acute metabolic acidosis and alkalosis. Acid-base disturbances were induced by the infusion of 0.3 N HCI or 0.3 N NaOH solution intravenously with the rate of 1 ml/min for 40 to 60 minutes. The blood pressure was monitored throughout the experiment and no changes in blood pressure was confirmed. The following results were obtained. 1. In the saline infused control rabbits, PH was 7.385 with negligible change in pH after the infusion, SCN space was 23.6% of body weight. 2. In the metabolic acidosis group, pH dropped from 7.417 to 7 130 and SCN space was 22.8% of body weight and suggested a negligible change in the extracellular space volume. 3. In the metabolic alkalosis group, pH increased from 7.393 to 7.478 and SCN space was 25.7% of body weight which confirmed a significant increase in the extracellular space volume.

  • The cells that make up the body continuously undergo cell division to maintain life, but stress and carcinogens, and physiological stimuli suppress immunological functions in the body and change cells to cancerous cells. The only way to overcome cancer is by treatment through early detection and proper diagnosis. However, because early stage of cancer shows subjective symptoms that are similar to those of other common illnesses, even doctors have difficulty separating cancer from common illnesses in its early stage. However, the Ki(bioenergy) present in our body recognizes and changes to the most minute changes in the body. This method of detecting the change in bioenergy to discover a disease in the early stage to raise treatment success is called the OBET: O-Ring, Bioenergy Test. This method, which is based on the theories of oriental medicine, focuses on tumors, especially malignant tumors, and has shown value in diagnosis and treatment, as witnessed in the clinical applications. The diagnosis method and cases of OBET: O-Ring, Bioenergy Test are presented.

  • The study is a new way of treating and preventing various diseases and promoting health by means of music specially picked and designed to produce Qi fitting to an individual person in the areas of the structure of human body, physiological function, pathological change, diagnosis and treatment. Oriental medicine music therapy is based on the concept and methodology of the Oriental Medicine, actually meaning the Oriental Medicine, that is specialized in controlling the human biological energy, the Qi, and in coordinating human body and mind which are easy to be unbalanced. The seven emotions affect the change of Qi. The weakness and strength of seven emotions can induce constraint of Qi, the seven emotions music therapy and relieving constraint music therapy can be used in this case.

  • Conventional stereoscopic (3D) displays using binocular parallax generate unnatural conflicts between convergence and accommodation. These conflicts can affect the observer's ability to fuse binocular images and may cause visual fatigue. In this study, time series changes in visual fatigue and depth sensation when viewing stereoscopic images with changing parallax were examined. In particular, the physiological changes, including the subjective symptoms of visual fatigue, when viewing five parallax conditions, were examined. Then a comparative analysis of the 2D and 3D conditions was performed based on the visual function. To obtain data regarding the visual function, the time series changes in the spontaneous-blinking rate before and during the viewing of 3D images were measured. The time series change results suggest that 2D and 3D images cause significantly different types of visual fatigue over the range of binocular disparity.

  • The change of sleep pattern is one of the most often altered normal physiological functions in elderly people. Besides normal change of sleep, insomnia and sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) are (one of) the main complaints. In addition, parasomnia is also frequent in this age group. Several parasomnias frequently found in the elderly are reviewed. Periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS), restless legs syndrome (RLS), and REM sleep behavior disorder are the most frequent parasomnias in old age. Most parasomnias could be diagnosed by polysomnography, and be treated easily. Therefore, early and precise diagnosis and management for parasomnia in aging people are needed.
