  • A distributed healthcare monitoring system prototype for clinical and trauma patients was developed, using wireless sensor network node. The proposed system aimed to measure various vital physiological health parameters like ECG and body temperature of patients and elderly persons, and transfer his/her health status wirelessly in Ad-hoc network to remote base station which was connected to doctor's PDA/PC or to a hospital's main Server using wireless sensor node. The system also aims to save the cost of healthcare facility for patients and the operating power of the system because sensor network is deployed widely and the distance from sensor to base station was shorter than in general centralized system. The wireless data communication will follow IEEE 802.15.4 frequency communication with ad-hoc routing thus enabling every motes attached to patients, to form a wireless data network to send data to base-station, providing mobility and convenience to the users in home environment.

  • Glucose uptake plays a pivotal role in maintaining whole body glucose homeostasis in adipocytes and skeletal muscles. In the present study we have shown that Fructus Piperis Longi Extracts (FPLE) can stimulate glucose uptake in OP9 adipocytes. The increasing effects of FPLE on glucose uptake were inhibited by compound C pretreatment, which means that the glucose uptake effects by FPLE were carried out by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. Further studies revealed that FPLE stimulated glucose transport occurs through a mechanism involving extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) activation.

  • Previously we have shown that shikonin has strong anti-tumor activities via inducing apoptosis and suppressing metastasis on LLC cells in vivo and in vitro. Here we have investigated anti-angiogenic potential of shikonin and its possible mechanism of action in HSE cells. Shikonin inhibited the proliferation of HSE cells in a concentration-dependent manner. It was shown that this proliferation inhibition was caused by apoptosis induced by shikonin via BrdU incorporation and Western blotting analysis. Shikonin treatment was caused that decrease of activation of caspases and cleavage of PARP. And shikonin induced that the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38. Moreover, shikonin showed anti-angiogenic activities inhibiting tube-like formation of HSE cells in vitro and vascular formation of LLC cells in vivo. These findings suggest that shikonin may a possible candidate not only anti-metastatic agent but also anti-angiogenic agent.

  • Final year students are normally encountering high pressing in their study. In view of this fact, this research focuses on determining mental states condition of college student in final year based on the psycho-physiological information. The experiments were conducted in two times, i.e., prior- and post- graduation seminar examination. The early results indicated that the student profile of mood states (POMS) in prior final graduation seminar showed higher scores than students in post final graduation seminar. Thus, in this research, relation between biosignal representing by heart rate variability (HRV) and questionnaire responses were evaluated by hidden Markov model (HMM) and neural networks (NN).

  • Intracellular pH(pH$\sub$i/) is strictly regulated since it is related to various cellular events such as contractility, signal transduction, ion regulation, cell volume, and energy production etc. In physiological conditions, pH$\sub$i/ of arteriolar smooth muscle faced substantial pressure to be changed during the regulation of blood flow. Therefore it is very important to know the regulatory mechanism of pH$\sub$i/.(omitted)

  • This study investigated physiology and psychological response of subjects, when heat pump was operated long time within comfort temperature range. Eight subjects were participated for the experiment. Their age was from 22 to 25 years old. The results of this experiment will propose basic data for improving comfort control algorithm in fluctuating environment by using heat pump. When indoor temperature was controlled by heat pump, the conclusion was as follows. 1) When votes of subjects was considered, the thermal comfort neutrality or lower range helped formation of comfort sensation for subjects. 2) When room temperature was lower, thermal comforts of shoulder, knee and foot with subjects thermal comfort showed high correlation. And when room temperature was higher, thermal comfort of face region with subjects thermal comfort showed high correlation. 3) The necessity of temperature change after 50 minutes from initially operating heat pump demands the additional analysis against the physiological signal.

  • Bisphenol A (BPA) mimics estrogen and its activity is one third to one quarter that of estradiol. BPA, an ubiquitous environmental contaminent has been shown to cause development reproductive toxicity and carcinogenic effect. BPA may do physiological action through ER${\alpha}$ and ER${\beta}$ which are expressed in central nerve system.(omitted)

  • Bile acids are major constituents of bile and known to help absorb dietary fat and fat-soluble vitamins in the gastrointestinal tract. In the past few decades, many studies have shown that bile acids not only play a role in fat digestion but also function as broad range of signal transduction hormones by binding to various receptors present in cell membranes or nuclei. Bile acid receptors are distributed in a wide range of organs and tissues in the human body. They perform multitudes of physiological functions with complex mechanisms. When bile acids bind to their receptors, they regulate fat and glucose metabolism in a tissue-specific way. In addition, bile acids are shown to inhibit inflammation and fibrosis in the liver. Considering the roles of bile acids as metabolic regulators, bile acids and their receptors can be very attractive targets in treating metabolic disorders. In the future, if roles of bile acids and their receptors are further clarified, they will be the novel target of drugs in the treatment of various metabolic diseases.
