Potential Health Benefits of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): A Review

  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a mixture of positional and geometric isomers of octadecadienoic acid with two conjugated double bonds. Of more than a dozen isomers of CLA found naturally in dairy and meat products from ruminants, c-9, t-11 and t-10, c-12 are the two isomers with known physiological importance, including anticarcinogenic, antidiabetic, antilipogenic, and antiatherosclerotic effects. Positive effects of CLA on immune function and bone modeling have also been reported. In spite of the compelling findings in tissue cultures and experimental animal models, its effect, dose, and mechanism of action vis-à-vis specific isomers remains speculative. Results obtained from animal models are inconclusive and conflicting at times in humans, where the research data is limited. It appears that there is a long way to go before CLA could be accepted unequivocally as having definite effects in any or all of these physiological states and how such effects actually occur in humans. The objective of this review is to critically examine the available literature on potential health benefits of CLA observed in cell culture, animal models, and human subjects, wherever possible and to a certain extent the mechanism of action associated with these biological activities.

Pilot Study on Variation of Menstruating Women's Pulse Energy in Left and Right Chon, Kwan, Cheok (월경기 여성의 맥파 변화에 대한 예비 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the change and correlation of pulse energy in Left and Right Chon, Kwan, Cheok during menstruation, especially around menstruation start date. Methods: The subjects of this experiment were 8 healthy women whose menstruation periods are regular. We measured 3D Blood Pressure Pulse Analyzer (3D-MAC) tests before and after menstruation start date. Results: The results were as follows 1. The pulse energy of the Right Chon was significantly decreased and Left Kwan was comparatively increased during the next day of menstruation start date than previous day. 2. There was a negative correlation between Left Kwan and Left Cheok, Right Chon and Right Kwan pulse energy during the previous and menstruation start date. The negative correlation disappeared between Right Chon and Right Kwan at the next day of menstruation start date. Conclusions: The results suggest that Chon, Kwan, Cheok pulse energy changes are related to menstruation and reflect physiological mechanism of menstruating women. Further study will be needed.

A Study on Cosmetic Acupuncture Through Anatomy and Physiology Interpretation (해부생리학 해석을 통한 미용침의 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism of Cosmetic Acupuncture through reinterpretation of anatomy and physiology. Methods : The causes of wrinkle increases and rapid aging of facial skin were studied and the theoretical system of Cosmetic Acupuncture treatment was analyzed through anatomy and physiology reinterpretation. Results and Conclusions : An increase in wrinkles and rapid aging of facial skin is caused by xerosis. Skin condition represents the condition of subcutaneous muscle. The reason why skin becomes easily dry is the heat produced by craniofacial part. Craniofacial part always generates lot of physiological fever because of the muscles. This physiological fever is produced from the muscles that are responsible for maintaining skull suture, controlling the movement of temporomandibular joint, maintaining head and neck posture. Controlling this fever is the crux of Cosmetic Acupuncture mechanism. These muscles correspond to Foot Taeyang meridian-muscle, Foot Soyang meridian-muscle and Foot Yangmyung meridian-muscle. Cosmetic Acupuncture is effective for preventing facial skin from aging and wrinkle increase by mechanical stimulus on facial muscles, and for controlling craniofacial part meridian-muscle system producing the heat.

Effects of Vanadate on the Calcium Flux of Cardiac Muscle (Vanadate가 심근막을 통한 $Ca^{++}$의 유입 및 유출에 미치는 영향)

  • Since it was proposed that vanadate may be an ‘ideal endogenous regulator of the $Na^+,\;K^+-ATPase$ activity (Cantley et at, 1979), vanadate has been a subject of intensive research and a variety of its physiological effects have been described (Nechay, 1984). In isolated guinea pig heart muscle vanadate shows a positive inotropic effect on ventricular muscle, while it induces a negative inotropic effect on atrial muscle. But its underlying mechanism has not been elucidated so far. Therefore, in this study the flux rates of calcium ion into and from guinea pig heart muscle were measured to throw some light on the underlying mechanism, because those rates have been known to be closely related to the cardiac contractility and the results are summarized as follows: 1) Calcium efflux rates from the intracellular $Ca^{++}$ pool (compartment 4) of both guinea pig left atrium and right ventricle were significantly reduced by vanadate and their pool sizes were significantly increased by vanadate. 2) The magnitude of calcium influx into left atrium was reduced by vanadate, While the magnitude of calcium influx into right ventricle was not affected by vanadate. From these results, it may be concluded that the positive inotropic effect of vanadate on the ventricular muscle was due to a reduced efflux rate of calcium ion and its negative inotropic effect on atrial muscle was resulted from a reduced influx of calcium ion.

Ginseng; Recent Advances and Trends (인삼연구의 최근 발전과 경향)

  • Ginseng, the root of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, is well-known oriental herbal medicine. The number of paper reporting the effects on its physiological, pharmacological, and behavioral effects has been increased every year, since ginsenosides isolated from ginseng are known to be biologically active components. This brief review summarizes some of new findings from recently published papers on ginsenosides or ginseng saponins. Therefore, this paper includes the various effects of ginsenosides on neuronal cell growths, on behavior of experimental animals, on enzyme activities, on the release and uptake of neurotransmitters, on neuronal cell excitability, on the motility of intestine, on antitumor activity, on cardiovascular system and metabolism. In spite of various effects of ginsenosides on various cells or organs, it is still to date impossible for one to clearly explain the exact mechanism on the action of ginsenosides. However, in this article I will discuss several papers providing possible explanations on the physiological and pharmacological actions including signal transudation pathway of ginsenosides. The elucidation of the exact mechanism of ginsenosides on cellular or molecular level will not only give us a chance to explain why people have used ginseng as an elixir of life for several thousands of year but also give us a crucial chance to apply ginseng to modern medicine.

Physiological characterization of kinetics and action mechanism of vibrio hemolysin

  • The action mechanism of hemolysin rendering virulency of Vibrio anguilarum has not clarified as yet, even though there were several possible factors explained. We have studied hemolytic kinetics performed by hemolysin from V. anguillarum strain V7 as well as binding of hemolysin to RBC membrane. Maximal rate of hemolysis and duration of lag phase were directly and inversly correlated to the concentration of hemolysin used. Hemolysin molecules are known to bind consumptively with proper diameter, while other protectants with smaller diameter could not. In conclusion, hemolysin should bind irreversibly to RBC membrane exert hemolysis distorting osmotic pressure. The binding could be hindered by spatial structure of the RBC surfacem which might be caused by sialic acid.
