  • Effort to improve balance ability in the field of rehabilitation has been constantly issued and developed up to now. A variety of subcomponent of postural control including function and cognition should be needed in many body systems and be complicatedly linked to each system. In South Korea, although decreased postural dysfunction due to neurological or musculoskeletal disorders has been well documented, we do not have many experience and knowledge of vestibular rehabilitation for maintain and improve balance function. In the United States, vestibular physical therapy is already acknowledged as clinical subspecialty by American Physical Therapy Association. However, there is no curriculum subject related to vestibular rehabilitation in standard education of physical therapy and no specialist who has clinical experience and knowledge of this realm. Therefore, we reviewed general information and basic knowledge of vestibular rehabilitation such as current state of vestibular disorder in South Korea, pathology, major causes of vestibular dysfunction including peripheral vestibular disorders, vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and central disorder, evaluation of vestibular dysfunction, and treatment for vestibular dysfunction new approaches. We expect that physical therapist in South Korea recognize clinical significance of vestibular exercise and that clinical concern and research will be begun in near future.

With the manipulation the vertebral manipulation effected an affirmative effect to cervicogenic headache(Niels Nilsson et al,1997). The manipulation, soft the tissue massage, postural education/advice, muscular elongation, the traction, and postural exercises initially came to be used with that technique which the upper cervical vertebra(0-C3) passive accessory intervertebral movement comes to be used with a cervicogenic headache treatment technique(Grant T & Niere K., 2000). Also, it relates with the diagnosis standard about a cervicogenic headache when the body function over of the cervical vertebra is discovered, the Muscle energy technique was proposed in the treatment which is safety and effect(Bogduk N,2001). The TENS and the Mange gave a reduction effect of pain often.

Some muscle enzymes and others(GOT, LDH, ALD, CPK in serum, WBC, ESR) that known as the indicators of muscle damage were measured before exercise. After measurements they run on a treadmill ($incline:25\%$, speed;3.5miles/h) for 7 min. on an average. The intensity of this kind of exercise was $90.5\%$ of maximal exercise intensity. After exercise, same indicators were measured at the just after exercise, 24hr after, 48hr after, 72hr after. Also muscle soreness level was evaluated at same intervals by make use of Modified Abraham's scale. The result was as follow: There was no relationships between muscle soreness and the indicators of muscle damage but ALD was the most important indicator that can be explains the muscle soreness very well.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe physical therapists' self-reported: (1) attitudes and beliefs about evidence~based practice(EBP), (2) education, knowledge, and skills related to obtaining and evaluating evidence, (3) attention to the literature relevant to practice, (4) access to and availability of information and (5) perceptions of the barriers to evidence-based practice. Methods: Our study sample consisted of a random sample of 90 physical therapists in gwang-ju and junnam. Participants completed a questionnaire. Responses were summarized for each item, and logistic regression analyses were used to examine relationships among variables. Results: According to the respondents, the primary barrier to implementing EBP was lack of time. The results suggest they believe that the use of evidence in practice was necessary, that the literature is helpful to them in their practice and decision making, and that quality of patient care is better when evidence is used. Many of the beliefs, skills and behaviors we examined were related to the education courses and sex. The majority of the respondents had access to online information at home. Conclusion: They noted that they needed to increase the use of evidence in their daily practice.

  • To overcome obstacles and to attain the goals of practical training for the students in the department of physical therapy it is necessary to effective an effective system for practical training. And to develop a good System it is essential to monitor the response of the students in practical training of physical therapy and to gather fundamental data. The author made up a questionnaire to the students in the department of physical therapy after the end of practical training course. The questionnaire consisted of 13 questionnaire for the general characterisitcs of the students, 19 questions for the degree of satisfaction (4 for the environment of practical training, 4 for the environment of practical training, 4 for the content 3 for the time assignment and 4 for the evaluation) and one open question. As results the students were satisfied with the practicality and fresh experience. But they were relatively unsatisfied with the environment of the practical training and the number and sincerity of the trainers. Especially they were dissatisfied with the correspondence with the objectives of education, conection with the lecture, communication with the trainers, time assignment and evaluation. As a Part of efforts to formulate an effective system fer practical training it is necessary to estabilish concrete goals and detail check lists to guide both trainers and students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between financial stress, depression, and conjugal affection and the motivation for rehabilitation. One hundred eighty-six stroke patients were included in the study and a survey with 65 questions was used. The survey includes questions to evaluate personal factors, characteristics related with physical therapy, characteristics related with disease, depression, conjugal affection, and motivation for rehabilitation. Education, employment, left hemiplegia and right hemiplegia, depression, financial stress, conjugal affection were statistically significant factors (p<.05). These variables have significant effects on motivation for rehabilitation. This study indicates that financial stress and depression need to be decreased to improve motivation for rehabilitation of stroke patients. It also indicates that the factors facilitating conjugal affection, education, and occupation need to be considered for rehabilitation programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of graded low back exercise program with patient education about low back pain care on abdominal strength, endurance and flexibility of waist of chronic low back pain patents. For this study 13 patients aged 40 to 60 were selected as subjects, who suffered from low back pain and got diagnosed by physician. The exercise program and the education were executed for total 6 weeks, posture education were executed with physical exercises over first 1 to 4 weeks period and over 5 to 6 weeks the exercises were executed. The effect of the exercises and the education were evaluated through weights, WHR, fat(%), flexibility by sit-and-reach and trunk extension test, strength by sit-up test and back sit-up test. Weights were, decreased after physical exercise and education, but there was no statistical significance. Wasit hip ratio(WHR) and fat(%) were decreased after physical exercise and education, but there were no statistical significances. Sit-and-reach was significantly increased from $13.68{\pm}5.59cm$ to $19.45{\pm}3.81cm$ after education and physical exercise(P<0.05). Trunk extension was significantly increased from $30.31{\pm}11.34cm$ to $40.88{\pm}6.16cm$ after education and physical exercise(P<0.05). Sit-up and Back sit-up were increased after physical exercise and education, but there were no statistical significances. These results suggest that graded low back exercise program with patient education about low back pain care increase the abdominal strength, endurance and the flexibility of waist in low back pain patients.

  • Objectives: Although the number of clinics offering temporomandibular joint (TMJ) physical therapy has been increasing to help with its treatment, the scope of dental physiotherapy reflected in the dental hygienist curriculum is very limited. This study aims to survey the status of dental physiotherapy work and the need for educating dental hygienists. Methods: An online community platform was used to survey 140 dental hygienists working in clinical dental hospitals. The survey included questions about general characteristics, the experience of dental physiotherapy work, the importance of physiotherapy work performance, and the need for physical therapy education for dental hygienists. Results: Half of the study participants had prior experience working in dental physiotherapy. Out of 140 participants, 88.6% agreed with the opinion that 'physical therapy work is important or that it will become important'. Furthermore, 84.3% agreed that 'physical therapy education is necessary for dental hygienists'. Even dental hygienists without physical therapy experience (50.7%) believed that related education would be necessary because of the importance of physical therapy work in dentistry. Conclusions: This study suggests the need for education in dental physiotherapy to help dental hygienists effectively perform clinical tasks.
