The present study investigated the effects of Hovenia Dulcis (HD) fruit extract powder on the improvement of physical activity, especially exercise capacity. Forty mice were divided into 4 groups including normal controls, negative controls, 100 (HD-100) and 200 (HD-200) mg/kg HD fruit extract powder groups for 5-times exercises using treadmill. Normal control did not performed treadmill running but others did 5-times for 10 days. HD fruit extract powders were administrated orally one-times per day for 10 days before treadmill exercise and normal and negative controls were fed with excipient water. After 5-times exercise, blood biochemical analysis showed that aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine phosphokinase (CK) activities and blood lactate concentration were statistically increased in negative controls than in normal controls. They were decreased in HD fruit extract powder groups, compared with negative controls. These results were considered as the effects of HD fruit extract powders on reduced tissue damages during exercise. Other measured indices did not reveal remarkable differences. All together, these results suggest that HD fruit extract powders may enhance the exercise performance by recovering the exercise-fatigue via blood lactate concentration by reducing blood LDH activity and via reduction of blood CK and AST activity.
Purpose: We investigated the effects of physical practice, mental practice, and cross education using serial reaction time (SRT). We recruited 21 right-handed healthy males and females who gave consent and had no clinical history for their upper limbs. Methods: The subjects were divided into three groups; actual practice (n=7), mental practice (n=7), and controls (n=7), who performed actual training, mental training, or no intervention respectively for three weeks. Super lab 4.0 displayed four symbols on the monitor and subjects pushed on the matching button, with reaction time assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results: Reaction time was significantly lower after actual or mental practice (p<0.05). Actual practice also decreased left hand reaction time. Conclusion: Actual practice and mental practice can improve motor learning, but mental practice is not sufficient for cross education.
Purpose: We investigated the effects of physical practice, mental practice, and cross education using serial reaction time (SRT) in the non-dominant left arm of right-handed individuals. Methods: Subjects were divided into three groups; physical practice (n=8), mental practice (n=8) and controls (n=8). They did, respectively, physical training or mental training, or had no intervention for three weeks. Super lab 4.0 displayed four symbols on the monitor and subjects were asked to push the matching button. Reaction time was assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results: Reaction time was significantly lower after physical practice (p<0.05), but mental practice did not significantly lower reaction time? in the left hand. Also, reaction time was not significantly lower after physical practice or mental practice in the right hand. Conclusion: Physical practice can improve motor learning, but mental practice is not sufficient. Also, neither physical practice nor mental practice is sufficient for cross education from the nondominant to the dominant arm.
Objective: Non-specific chronic low back pain (NS-CLBP) has been related to abnormal trunk muscle activations, but literature reported considerable variability in muscle amplitudes of NS-CLBP patients during prolonged sitting periods. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the differences among homogenous NS-CLBP subgroups in muscle activity, using muscle co-contraction indices as a more objective approach, and their roles on pain development during a 1-hour period of prolonged sitting. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty NS-CLBP subjects with motor control impairment (MCI) [10 classified as having flexion pattern disorder, and 10 with active extension pattern disorder], and 10 healthy controls participated in the study. Subjects followed a 1-hour sitting protocol on a standard office chair. Four trunk muscle activities including amplitudes and co-contraction indices were recorded using electromyography over the 1-hour period. Perceived back pain intensity was recorded using a numeric pain rating scale every 10 minutes throughout the sitting period. Results: All study groups presented with no significantly distinctive trunk muscle activities at the beginning of sitting, nor did they change over time when pain increased to a significant level. Both MCI subgroups reported a similarly significant increase in pain behavior through mid-sitting (p<0.001). However, after mid-sitting, they significantly differed from each other in pain (p<0.01) but did not differ in the levels of muscle activation. Conclusions: This study was the first to highlight the similarities in trunk muscle activities among homogenous NS-CLBP patients related to MCI and compared them to healthy controls while sitting for an extended period of time, and the significant increase in pain over the 1-hour sitting might not be attributed to trunk muscle activation.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the effects of sling exercise on muscle activity and pain in patients with rotator cuff repair. Methods: This research evaluated 20 rotator cuff repair patients, divided randomly between 10 controls and 10 in an experimental group who performed a sling exercise. Both the experimental and control groups underwent transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and performed continuous passive motion. Muscle activity was measured with a surface electromyograph and pain was measured with the visual analogue scale. The paired t-test was used to compare groups before and after the experiment. The independent t-test was conducted to assess differences in the degree of change between the two groups before and after the experiment. Results: Within-group comparison of both the experimental and control group showed significant differences in muscle activity and pain. Comparison of the groups revealed significant differences in muscle activity between groups group, but not in pain. Conclusion: These results indicate that sling exercise is effective for improving muscle activity of rotator cuff repair patients.
Because non-point source pollution is very closely related to hydrological characteristics, its importance is highly emphasized nowadays along with accelerating climate change. Especially for Korea, the non-point source pollution and its control are entirely depending on runoff, precipitation, drainage, land use or development, based on geographical and topographical reasons of Korea. Many studies reported the physical (e.g., apparatus- and natural-type facilities, etc.) and chemical methods (e.g., organic and inorganic coagulants, etc.) of controling non-point pollutant source pollution, however, those are needed to be reconsidered along with climate change causing the unexpected patterns and amounts of precipitation and strengthen complexity of social community. The objectives of this study are to assess recent situations of non-point source pollution in Korea and its control means and to introduce possible effective ways of non-point source pollution against climate change in near future.
Purpose: This study aimed to assess the quality of life (QoL) of children with glycogen storage disease (GSD) and their parents and to determine the impact of myopathies. Methods: A prospective case-control study was conducted at the Cairo University Children's Hospital and National Liver Institute, Menoufia University. A promising new style of questionnaire called the Stark Quality of Life Questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life. Results: Fifty-two children diagnosed with GSD (cases) and 55 age- and sex-matched healthy children (controls) were included. A statistically significant difference was found between cases and controls regarding food intake; mental behavior parameters such as mood, energy, and social contact; and physical behavior parameters such as running and tying shoelaces. Children with myopathies had significantly lower QoL scores in most of the parameters. Conclusion: GSDs alter children and their parents' mental and physical abilities. Lower QoL scores were detected in children with both skeletal myopathy and cardiomyopathy, but the difference was not statistically significant when compared with the children without myopathies.
This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption, physical activity and breast cancer risk in Korean women. Newly histologically identified cases (N = 108) were selected at Hanyang and Soonchunhyang University Hospitals in Seoul, from January 1998 to August 1999. Hospital-based controls (n = 121) were the patients who visited at the same hospital in the department of plastic surgery, general surgery and opthalmology. Subjects were asked informations on demographic, reproductive, and history of breast feeding as well as physical activity, exercise habit, alcohol consumption by individual interview. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were calculated by using unconditional logistic regression after adjusted for confounding factors. Among postmenopausal women, the risk of breast cancer increased with increasing alcohol drinking: relative risk for the highest group ( $\geq$ 150 g per week) compared with the lowest group (never drinking) was 2.05 (CI=1.74-3.79). Association of exercise and high physical activity for breast cancer appeared to be limited to women with high physical index among postmenopausal women. We observed decreasing risk of breast cancer with increasing physical activity index among postmenopausal women (OR=0.49,95% CI=0.56-0.92). Results of this study support a protective effects of physical activity during adulthood for breast cancer. (Korean J Nutrition 36(1): 40-48, 2003)

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of TENS and cold application on secondary thermal hyperalgesia in rats induced by muscle pain. Muscle pain was induced in male Sprague-Dowley rats by intra-muscular injection of gastrocnemius with $3\%$ carrageenan. The paw withdrawal latency(PWL) and tail flick test(TFT) to heat were used to detect secodary thermal hyperalgesia induced by the muscle pain. PWL and TFT were quantified before and 4, 10, and 24 h after induction of muscle pain and after application of TENS(100Hz, $100{\mu}s$, sensory intensity) and cold($4^{\circ}C$). TENS and cold significantly reduced the PWL and TFT to heat stimuli when compared with controls receiving no TENS and cold(p<.05). These results suggested that application of TENS and cold attributed to decrease secodary thermal hyperalgesia in rat induced by muscle pain.
Burning and lump sensation in the throat is a common disorder in middle aged woman. It is generally considered to be a neurotic origin but its pathophysiology is still remained unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the Pharyngoesophageal structural lesions and the esophageal motility disorders among the patients with globus pharyngeus and to elucidate whether any specific manometric abnormality might have any causative role in the pathogenesis of the globus sensation, and we also wanted to know whether such tests were necessary in evaluating those patients. Structural lesions were demonstrated in 21 cases(17.5 %) among 120 patients. But among 44 controls, there were also Two cases(4.5 %) of structural lesions, and there was less significantly difference in the prevalence of the structural lesions between the patients and controls(p=0.0625) Manometric abnormalities over the lower esophageal sphincter and the lower esophageal body were demonstrated in 28 cases (23.3 %) of the patients, while only one case (2.3 %) of the controls revealed such abnormality ( p=0.0037). Various manometric parameters of the upper esophageal sphincter and pharynx showed no difference between the patients and controls except the upper esophageal sphincter pressure at lateral sides which was lower in patients than in controls (p=0.0034). Globus sensation is a kind of symptom of esophageal dysmotility, and esophageal manometry is necessary to detect such abnormality in patients with globus sensation, Careful physical examination is also necessary to detect structural lesions in the pharynx and esophagus.
