Effect of the Properties of Diesel Engine Oil and Aging on Exhaust Gases and DPF (경유엔진용 윤활유의 성상 및 열화가 배출가스 및 후처리 장치에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the impact of engine oil aging on PM(Particulate Matter), exhaust gases, and DPF. It is widely known that the specification of a lubricant and its consumption in an ICE considerably influences the release of regulated harmful emissions under normal engine operating conditions. Considering DPF clogging phenomena associated with lubricant-derived soot/ash components, a simulated aging mode is designed for DPF to facilitate engine dynamometer testing. A PM/ash accumulation cycle is developed by considering real-world engine operating conditions for the increment of engine oil consumption and natural DPF regeneration for ash accumulation. The test duration for DPF aging is approximately 300 h with high- and low-SAPs engine oils. Detailed engine lubricant properties of new and aged oils are analyzed to evaluate the effect of engine oil degradation on vehicle mileage. Furthermore, physical and chemical analyses are performed using X-CT, ICP, and TGA/DSC to quantify the engine oil contribution on the PM composition. This is achieved by sampling with various filters using specially designed PM sampling equipment. Using high SAPs engine oil causes more PM/ash accumulation compared with low SAPs engine oils and this could accelerate fouling of the EGR in the engine, which results in an increase in harmful exhaust gas emissions. These test results on engine lubricants under operating conditions will assist in the establishment of regulated and unregulated toxic emissions policies and lubricant quality standards.

  • In spite of extensive knowledge of the surface chemistry and the transport mechanism in filtration systems, there is still insufficient understanding of the physical characteristics of suspensions and the system components. Because of this, no filtration mechanisms are mathematically generalized to the full extent. The purpose of this paper is to propose experimental equations for the filtration process. using the tracer study in filter layer. Some of results are as follows. (1) The Volume of the specific deposit (${\sigma}$) in filtration was directly measurable using the tracer study without interrupting the filtration. (2) It was also confirmed that the head loss in filtration was greatly in fluenced by the micro-air babbles. (3) The correction coefficient(f) was introduced into the Kozeny-Carman equation in order to apply it for the clogging filter media. The coefficient(f) was experimentally obtained. The total head loss of the filter media is given by next equation. $${\frac{h}{h_0}}={\frac{1}{L}}{\int}^{z=L}_{z=0}f({\sigma})g({\varepsilon}_0,{\sigma})dz$$ $$f=aexp(-b{\sigma})$$ The above equation was applicable without regard to the variation of the suspension concentration, the filter medium diameter, the filter depth, the filtration velocity, and the amount of aluminum in all continuous filtration experiments. (4) The total head loss was graphically generalized assuming mathematical filtration models I II (see fig. 7,8) (5) The total head loss was obtained from the filtration model in the field filtration conditions. Assessment of Field Application of Contaminated Sediment Removal Efficiency Using PVDF Combined Hybrid Tunnel Drainage (PVDF(Polyvinylidene Fluoride) 필름형 트랜스듀서 하이브리드 터널배수재에 대한 오염퇴적물 제거효율의 현장 적용성 평가)

  • Typically, contaminated sediments cause clogging of the drain pipe, which increases the residual water pressure in the drain pipe; this study constructed a system for improving drainage efficiency of tunnels by reducing physical and chemical obstructions through ultrasonic energy generated by a PVDF film. The developed hybrid drainage system utilized a PVDF material film fused with an existing drainage tunnel and maintenance system resulting in the ability to initialize the reverse piezoelectric effect, which was evaluated through an on site application. In order to investigate the maintenance performance of the tunnel drainage system, contaminated sediments were simulated in a drainage pipe to test the effect of ultrasonic conditions on drainage efficiency in the laboratory. As a result of applying the developed portable equipment, the ultrasonic energy was generated for about 20 minutes resulting in a reduction of 74.62% of the contaminated sediments and improving drainage efficiency. From the tunnel, acoustic pressure measurements were taken to calculate the response rate while taking into account the laboratory results. In addition, PVDF film was attached to the transverse and longitudinal side of the drainage pipes where contaminated sediments occur most often in the field tunnel. these calculations show contaminant removal was 90% effective.

Ecological Health Assessments on Turbidwater in the Downstream After a Construction of Yongdam Dam (용담댐 건설후 하류부 하천 생태계의 탁수영향 평가)

  • This study was to examine impacts of turbid water on fish community in the downstream of Yongdam Dam during the period from June to October 2006. For the research, we selected six sampling sites in the field: two sites were controls with no influences of turbid water from the dam and other remaining four sites were the stations for an assessment of potential turbid effects. We evaluated integrative health conditions throughout applications of various models such as necropsy-based fish health assessment model (FHA), Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) using fish assemblages, and Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI). Laboratory tests on fish exposure under 400 NTU were performed to find out impact of turbid water using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that fine solid particles were clogging in the gill in the treatments, while particles were not found in the control. This results indicate that when inorganic turbidity increases abruptedly, fish may have a mechanical abrasion or respiratory blocking. The stream health condition, based on the IBI values, ranged between 38 and 48 (average: 42), indicating a "excellent" or "good" condition after the criteria of US EPA (1993). In the mean time, physical habitat condition, based on the QHEI, ranged 97 to 187 (average 154), indicating a "suboptimal condition". These biological outcomes were compared with chemical dataset: IBI values were more correlated (r=0.526, p<0.05, n=18) with QHEI rather than chemical water quality, based on turbidity (r=0.260, p>0.05, n=18). Analysis of the FHA showed that the individual health indicated "excellent condition", while QHEI showed no habitat disturbances (especially bottom substrate and embeddeness), food-web, and spawning place. Consequently, we concluded that the ecological health in downstream of Yongdam Dam was not impacted by the turbid water.
