There are few case reports on the treatment of churg strauss syndrome by oriental medicine. We experienced one case of a female patient, 47 ages, who had symptoms; Rt. hemiplegia, aphasia, M/S dull, Rt. facial palsy. We used acupuncture, physical therapy, herbal medication and taping therapy. After 6 months of Acupuncture therapy, Herbal medication, physical therapy and taping therapy, a remarkable improvement was made for cerebral infarction patient who accompany churg strauss syndrome. The patient could take self-ambulation after treatment and many symptoms have improved. Cerebral infarction patient who accompany churg strauss syndrome is not common ,but in case the treatment by korean traditional medicine, there was improvement in patient's state. We think that it need the further study and clinical practice for Churg Strauss Syndrome.
Object: We evaluated the efficacy of chest physical therapy in pediatric patients with pneumonia. Method: Retrospective study was performed in 89 pneumonia patients admitted to pediatric unit. The subjects were divided into two groups: control group; treatment group. Control group included 42 patients who didn't receive chest physical therapy. Treatment group included 47 patients who received chest physical therapy. The chest physcial therapy employed were postural drainage, chest percussion, deep breathing training and enhancement of coughings. The efficacy was evaluated by x-ray outcome before discharge. Results: There were no significant difference in age, sex, type of pneumonia, and symptom duration between two groups. However the duration of fever after admission, duration of antibiotic use and hospital stay were longer in treatment group. In treatment group, longer the day to initiate chest physical therapy, longer the hospital stay. The final outcome was not different between groups. Conclusion: The results suggest that the referred patients for chest physical therapy tends to be of severe cases. Nevertheless, the result that the outcome was not different in two groups means that the chest physical therapy could be used as a effective treatment method in pediatric patient with pneumonia.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether extension exercise is effective in reducing low back pain. Nine patients with low back pain were randomly assigened to one of two groups-one was an experimental group in which the patient were treated with extension exercise(McKenzie method) and conservative therapy. The other was a control group in which the patients were treated with conservative therapy only. Treatment was performed for a period of ten days during Which we examed each patient three times: the first exam was done at the begining of treatment, the second after fives days, and the third after ten days. We used 'The Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire'(r=.99) as the examination tool. The results were as follows: 1. Both experimental and control groups showed nonsignificant differences before and after treatment, and the between group difference was also non-significant(P>.05). 2. There was no effective reduction of low back pain by MecKenzie's extension exercise(p>.05). We admit that our study protocol had several shortcomings. If they had been accounted for, the result might have been different. Further study should be done with a better experimental design, a larger sample, and a longer experimental duration.
Purpose : The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on Balance Ability of Knee Osteoarthritis(OA) by modality. Methods : The subjects were consisted of 30 women patients with knee OA. All subjects were randomly assigned to modality group. Each group had a treatment for 45 minutes per day and three times a week during 8 weeks period. Was used to measure recovery or worse of patient's condition, muscle assessment questionnaire(MAQ) was used to measure patient's muscular strength, Endurance, coordination/balance, KWOMAC was used to pain, stiffness, and physical function, and BPM was used to measure velocity, anterior-posterior. Results : This study results in following conclusions. 1. MAQ score was significantly decreased in modality group(p<.05). 2. KWOMAC score was significantly decreased in modality group(p<.05). 3. BPM were score was significantly decreased in modality group(p<.05). Conclusions : From this result the modality treatment retrogression characteristic will be effective in treatment of patient.
Background: This study was to suggest the process of making strategy for effective intervention and evaluation on functional problems of the frozen shoulder patient applied International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) Tools. Methods: The patient was 48years old woman with right shoulder adhesive capsulitis and calcific tendinitis. In first phase, therapists could list the information relating to functional problems used by the ICF Core set and then could confirm the interaction among the problems using the ICF assessment sheet. In second phase, therapist is needed to make the hypothesis and hypothesis testing and then set a primary functional goals and therapeutic goals in detail after prioritizing the problems to be managed based on the problem list. Lastly, after setting the confirmed problems as the purpose of intervention through the hypothesis testing, therapist could do some intervention after making a plan to solve these problems. Results: This report illustrates how to apply the process based on ICF concept into physical therapy practice. The decided hypothesis and goal that are to solve the problems the client faced were remarkably meaningful. Conclusions: Clinical decision making for the most effective intervention requires that therapists use the clinical reasoning process based on ICF concept.
The purpose of this study was to compare spatio-temporal parameters during walking between patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and a control group matched for age, height, and weight. Thirty-three subjects were included in this study. Fifteen normal subjects (age, $63.3{\pm}5.8$ yrs; height, $164.1{\pm}8.7$ cm; weight, $60.7{\pm}17.5$ kg) and eighteen patients (age, $64.0{\pm}7.7$ yrs; height, $164.7{\pm}7.3$ cm; weight, $63.6{\pm}7.7$ kg) participated in the study. The Vicon 512 Motion analysis system was used for gait analysis in each group during walking, with and without an obstacle. The measured spatio-temporal parameters were cadence, walking speed, stride time, step time, single limb support time, double limb support time, stride length, and step length. Results in stride length and step length, when walking without an obstacle, showed a significantly greater decrease in the patient group compared to the control group. During walking with an obstacle, the patient group showed a significantly greater decrease in the step length as compared to the control group. For the control group, there were significant decreases in parameters of cadence and walking speed and increases in parameters of stride time, step time, and single limb support time when walking with an obstacle. The patient group had lower cadence and walking speed and higher stride time, step time, and single limb support time during walking with an obstacle than in walking without an obstacle. These results suggest that patients with Parkinson's disease who walk over an obstacle can decrease cadence, stride length, and step length. Further study is needed, performed with more obstacles and combined with other external cues, such as visual or acoustic guides.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to figure out that the scapular stability exercise on unstable position can effect on the pain relief of the patient with lateral epicondylitis. Methods: The subject was 35 year old male, diagnosed as lateral epicondylitis. This patient was controled to do scapular stability exercise with crawling position on unstable surface, changing elbow movement from flexion to extension for 4 weeks, 5 times a week, 20 times in total. We used VAS to find the degree of pain and Cozen's test, Mill's test and Resisted middle finger test were determined for the measurement of epicondylitis changed. Results: The following is the result of this study. 1. Pain on lateral epicondylitis was relived from VAS 7 to VAS 0. 2. There were improvements that the results of tests for epicondylitis, Cozen's test, Mill's test and Resisted middle finger test, changed positive into negative signs. Conclusion: The result of this study indicates that the application scapular stability exercise on the unstable surface to the patient with lateral epicondylitis can relief the pain degree on the lateral epicondylitis and be used as one of lateral epicondylitis treatments.
Purpose : This study aims to comparison of ultrasonography on both sides of biceps brachii muscle of hemiplegic patient. Methods : The biceps brachii muscle of fifteen subjects (5 male, 10 female) with stroke were scanned with ultrasonography at the muscle belly at rest at elbow angles of 90 deg. The echogenicity (density, white area index; WAI, anatomic cross-sectional area; ACSA, volume) of ultrasonography was examined. Results : In the biceps brachii muscle, there were significant differences of density, WAI, ACSA, and volume between affected side and non-affected side. biceps brachii muscle, echogenicity (density, WAI) of the affected side was higher than non-affected side. biceps brachii muscle, echogenicity (ACSA, volume) of the non-affected side was higher than affected side. Conclusion : This study showed that change of skeletal muscle architecture properties occurred biceps brachii muscle of the affected side muscle of hemiplegic patient.
Background: The purpose of the study, using the ICF Tool in the process of rehabilitation of artificial joint replacement surgery of the hip joint, goal setting and understanding of the problem, through the process of creating intervention strategies, useful clinical practical course for rehabilitation I try to present the data. Methods: Fracture was the left total hip replacement (THR) surgery due to women of 76 years old. I proceed in order screening, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment planning and intervention, re-screening. Needs of the patient was walking short distances for using the toilet. In order to improve was carried out arbitration, after you have created a list of issues that limit the ability to walk short distances. Results: It was revealed improved results in self-paced walk test (SPWT) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) was used to examine whether the goals. In addition, MMT VAS, DGI, and TUG is a detailed goal was improved. Conclusions: It can be shown objectively the results of interventions performed for the purpose of solving the problem which is grasped through clinical Practical course for short-range walking ability enhance patient THR. I considered practical clinical course using the ICF Tool would be useful.
This study is about the correlation of pain strength between Oswestry Disability Index and Hendler 10-Minute Screening Test in the patient of low back pain. The subject were 66, in and out patient who had recieved physical therapy on low back pain in several hospitals at Seoul and Kyungkido. during July 5.-August 27. 1999 1. The average score of Oswestry Disability Index was $24.06{\pm}8.16$ and that of Hendler 10-Minute Screening Test was $24.82{\pm}4.31$. 2. The Pearson's R score between each questionnaires of Oswestry Disability Index and pain strength was .5692. p<0.0001. So it is very high. But, that between each questionnaires of Hendler 10-Minute Screening Test and pain strength was not significant.. 2261 p<0.05 3. The Pearson's R score between Pain strength of Oswestry and person care was .3391, sex life was .3756, social life was .4637 (p<0.005) and that between Pain factor of Hendler, pain area of Hendler and sleeping(4358), sex(.6198), position change(2767), (p<0.005). So it is significant. 4. The categories where we could see the correlation between Pain strenth of Oswestry and Hendler each questionnaires were sleeping(.3222), sex(5524), position change(4291).
