We propose an practical embodiment-based programming training course for middle school students using Arduino and conduct survey before and after the curriculum. Arduino is an open source physical computing platform that integrates the IDE used in processing language. It is a low-cost, relatively simple I/O interface compared to other platforms, and because of its practical formability, it is educational material suitable for programming. Subsequent surveys will provide feedback on changes in cognition of programming needs and improvement in thinking skills. In this study, the program based on embody-based programming using Arduino was conducted for 8 weeks for each first grade, and 112 middle school students for two years from '16 to '17. Based on the theoretical and practical training, the training was based on the application of the ultrasonic sensor to the RC car and the preparation of the adduction quadrotor drone. The purpose of this study is to prove that the recognition, necessity, and programming education of middle school students are effective for the improvement of thinking ability through the program based on embody-based programming using Arduino.
Inverse kinematics is a very useful method for control]ing the posture of an articulated body. In most inverse kinematics processes, the major matter of concern is not the posture of an articulated body itself but the position and direction of the end effector. In some applications such as 3D character animations, however, it is more important to generate an overall natural posture for the character rather than place the end effector in the exact position. Indeed, when an animator wants to modify the posture of a human-like 3D character with many physical constraints, he has to undergo considerable trial-and-error to generate a realistic posture for the character. In this paper, the Inductive Inverse Kinematics(IIK) algorithm using a Uniform Posture Map(UPM) is proposed to control the posture of a human-like 3D character. The proposed algorithm quantizes human behaviors without distortion to generate a UPM, and then generates a natural posture by searching the UPM. If necessary, the resulting posture could be compensated with a traditional Cyclic Coordinate Descent (CCD). The proposed method could be applied to produce 3D-character animations based on the key frame method, 3D games and virtual reality.
The iterator technique which is used for implementing physical operators of the query executor is known for its efficiency and extensibility. The most widely used technique for processing an operator on spatial objects is to process by dividing it into the filter step and the refinement step. Recently, there was a research for an optimizer which can generate more efficient query execution plans than those of traditional methods by separating a spatial operator into filter and refinement steps in the level of the object algebra. But, traditional query executors were not designed considering such query execution plans. So they have no function of transmitting the result of the filter operation between operators. We propose two methods, the probe technique and the tag technique, which transmit the result of the filter operator when using the iterator in the query execution plan in which operators are separated by filter/refinement steps and other operators can be allowed between the steps. Whereas the probe technique extends the state record within an operator, the tag technique stores the result of a filter step in an intermediate result in the form of the tag. Based on the comparison of these methods, we design and implement a query executor using the tag technique that is superior in extensibility. The implemented query executor can execute operations defined in the Spatial Object Algebra(SOA) to process an extended OQL for spatial queries.
The proliferation of online social networking services (OSNSs) and smartphones has enabled people to easily make friends with a large number of users in the online communities, and interact with each other. This leads to an increase in the usage rate of OSNSs. However, individuals who have immersed into their digital lives, prioritizing the virtual world against the real one, become more and more isolated in the physical world. Thus, their socialization processes that are undertaken only through lots of face-to-face interactions and trial-and-errors are apt to be neglected via 'Add Friend' kind of functions in OSNSs. In this paper, we present a friend recommendation system based on the on/off-line contextual information for the OSNS users to have more serendipitous offline interactions. In order to accomplish this, we modeled both offline information (i.e., place visit history) collected from a user's smartphone on a 3D tensor, and online social data (i.e., friend relationships) from Facebook on a matrix. We then recommended like-minded people and encouraged their offline interactions. We evaluated the users' satisfaction based on a real-world dataset collected from 43 users (12 on-campus users and 31 users randomly selected from Facebook friends of on-campus users).
Many researchers have studied flash memory in order to replace hard disk storages. Many FTL algorithms have been proposed to overcome physical constraints of flash memory such as erase-before-write, wear leveling, and poor write performance. Therefore, these constraints should be considered for testing FTL algorithms and the performance evaluation of flash memory. As doing the experiments, we suffer from several problems with costs and settings in experimental configuration. When we, for example, replay the traces of Oracle to evaluate the I/O performance with flash memory, it is hard to extract exact traces of I/O operations in Oracle. Since there are only write operations in the log, it is impossible to gather read operations. In MySQL and SQLite, we can gather the read operations by changing I/O functions in the source codes. But it is not easy to search for the exact points about I/O and even if we can find out the points, we might get wrong results depending on how we modify source codes to get I/O traces. The FlaSim proposed in this paper removes the difficulties when we evaluate the performance of FTL algorithms and flash memory. Our Linux drivers emulate the flash memory as a hard disk. And we can easily obtain the usage statistics of flash memory such as the number of write, read, and erase operations. The FlaSim can be gracefully extended to support the additional modules implemented by novel algorithms and ideas. In this paper, we describe the structure of FTL emulator, development tools and operating methods. We expect this emulator to be helpful for many experiments and research with flash memory.
With explosively growing PPI databases, the computational approach for a prediction and configuration of PPI network has been a big stream in the bioinformatics area. Recent researches gradually consider physicochemical properties of proteins and support high resolution results with integration of experimental results. With regard to current research trend, it is very close future to complete a PPI network configuration of each organism. However, direct applying the PPI network to real field is complicated problem because PPI network is only a set of co-expressive proteins or gene products, and its network link means simple physical binding rather than in-depth knowledge of biological process. In this paper, we suggest a protein functional flow model which is a directed network based on a protein functions' relation of signaling transduction pathway. The vertex of the suggested model is a molecular function annotated by gene ontology, and the relations among the vertex are considered as edges. Thus, it is easy to trace a specific function's transition, and it can be a constraint to extract a meaningful sub-path from whole PPI network. To evaluate the model, 11 functional flow models of Homo sapiens were built from KEGG, and Cronbach's alpha values were measured (alpha=0.67). Among 1023 functional flows, 765 functional flows showed 0.6 or higher alpha values.
Simulation is the imitation of some real thing, state of affairs, or process. The act of simulating something generally entails identifying certain key characteristics or behaviors of a selected physical or abstract system. And a simulator is the software or hardware tool that performs simulation tasks. When developing a simulator, the non-functional requirements such as modifiability, interoperability, and extendability should be required. However, existing studies about the simulator development focus not on such non-functional requirements but on the methodologies to build the simulation model. In this paper, we suggest the new architectural pattern for the software based simulator in consideration of such non-functional requirements. In order to define the architectural pattern, we identify the essential elements of the simulators, define relationships between them, and design the architectural structure with the elements to accommodate such non-functional requirements. According to the proposed pattern we can solve the simulation problems to combine the various simulation model components. The pattern guarantees modifiability by reconstructing the simulation model, also guarantees interoperability and extendability by adding various interfaces to the simulation model and by keeping the consistent interfacing mechanism between the simulation model components. The suggested architectural pattern can be used as the reference architecture of the simulator systems that will be developed in future.
Abstract An effective ATM management must address the various features of ATM such as connection-oriented environment, varying class of service, large scale traffic, virtual network configurations and, and multiple traffic types. For this, ATM network management reference model defined by ATM Forum describes the various types of network management needed to support ATM devices, private networks, public networks, and the interaction between them. One of these types is Integrated Local Management Interface (ILMI) defined to manage interconnected interface through SNMP-based network management protocol for ensuring the interoperability of ATM devices from different vendors. The purpose of ILMI is to enable two adjacent ATM devices to automatically configure the operation parameters of the common ATM link between them and then to provide a Plug and Plug function to any ATM devices with not a passive configuration by manager but a automatic configuration. This paper design and implement a Subscriber Interface Management System (SIMS) which provide automatic registration and management of ATM address of subscriber system and efficiently manages physical interface of subscriber who is connected to public ATM switch, ATM layer interface, configuration information and status information of VPC and VCC.

The purpose of this study is to develop and apply a Design Thinking-based Maker education program utilizing Arduino for middle school students. The study progress was made in four stages of preparation, development, implementation and evaluation according to the PDIE model. In this study, experts were verified for validity and pre-applied to students to improve the maker education program developed based on literature review. Then, it was applied to middle school club classes to check the effects through analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. In addition, the development of the program was completed by supplementing the improvements found in the course. The results of this study are as follows. First, the topics of the maker education program that can be used in middle schools were selected in consideration of the analysis of the 2015 revised curriculum, methods to using the Arduino, and social interest. Second, the program developed based on the selected topic consists of 4 classes of maker basic learning and 16 classes of design thinking-based maker activities. Third, the developed maker education program had a significant effect in improving STEAM literacy of middle school students, but did not have any significant effect in the interest in technology and orientation towards an engineering career. Fourth, learners were interested in the activities of designing and freely making by themselves, and they positively evaluated the experience of realizing the physical computing with Arduino. In addition, they practiced the spirit of a maker, such as autonomously collecting data and sharing them with colleagues, etc. while acting as a maker.

Maker movement is emerging as one of the key areas of the fourth industrial revolution in recent years. The maker movement is to create and share what users need using a variety of inexpensive production tools such as open source software and hardware, 3D printers and laser cutters. We think that the effect would be enhanced if design thinking is applied to elementary and middle school (K-12) class. The purpose of this study is to develop a design thinking-based maker education program and to apply it to classroom for clarify the effect on the creative problem solving ability of elementary school students. In order to verify the purpose of the research, students in the 5th-6th grades of elementary school were divided into a controlled group and an experimental group. The general lecture maker class was applied in the controlled group, and our developed design thinking-based maker class was simultaneously applied in the experimental group. The creative problem solving ability test was conducted before and after the test, and its effectiveness was verified using statistical t-test. In conclusion, this study suggests that design thinking-based maker education program has a positive effect on elementary school students' creative problem solving ability.
