Determination of Phthalic Acid Esters and Adipate in Sediment Samples (저질중의 프탈산 에스테르와 아디피산 분석)

  • The most common 8 phthalic acid esters (PAEs) and adipate in sediment were measured 5 times from 1999 to 2001 at 11 sites of river in Korea. Ultrasonication extraction with dichloromethane was done for extraction of the sediment. After concentration GC/MS-SIM analysis was performed. Three compounds (DEP, DBP and DEHP) among eight phthalic acid esters were detected from the sediment samples, and the other PAEs were not detected in any samples. DEHP (27.3~63.6%) was detected with higher frequency than any other compounds for sediment samples. And this compound had shown the highest average concentration (81.7~427.6 ng/g).

  • The reaction of 2-aminobenzamide with phthalic acid anhydride In dioxane produced a bicyclic product 2,8-dioxoisoindole(1,2,a) quinazoline (I) in addition to hydrolysis product 2(2-Carboxyphenyl)-1,2-2H-quinazoline-4-one (II). The yields were 64% and 30% respectively. On the other hand, the same reaction in DMF afforded compound (I) and 2(2N-dimethyl carbamyl phenyl)-1,4-2H-quinazoline-4-one (III) in 30% and 60% yield respectively. The compound III was also obtained by the reaction of compound II with dimethylamine. However the reaction of 2-aminobenzamide with neat succinic acid anhydride gave only bicyclic product 2,8-oxopyrrolidine (2,1,a)-1,4-2H-quinazoline (IV) in 93%.

Elution of Plasticizer fvom PVC Sheet in Alkaline Solutions (알카리수용액중에서 PVC Sheet로부터 가소제의 추출)

  • PVC sheet was treated in O~10M NaOH solutions at $80~150^{\circ}C$ for O~7 hour, in order to study the leaching phenomena of plasticizer. The yield of phthalic acid produced by hydrolysis of DOP was increased greatly with increasing temperature and NaOH concentration by accelerating of alkali catalyst. The yield of phthalic acid was reached ca. 100% in 10M NaOH at $150^{\circ}C$ over 3 hours. Therefore, the plasticizer containing 30% in PVC sheet could be hydrolyzed in alkali solutions before the occurrence of dehydrochlorination. Besides, in the thermal reaction, the pores were produced in the PVCsheet by the hydrolysis of DOP.

  • The organic impurities are formed in the p-xylene oxidation process to terephthalic acid(TPA) and they are present in the filtrate(mother liquor) solution or the TPA particles. The organic impurities present in the p-xylene oxidation are formed through side reactions or incomplete reaction. In this study, the main organic impurities, such as benzoic acid, p-toluic acid, p-tolualdehyde, 4-carboxybenzaldehyde, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, trimellitic acid, and 4-hydroxymethyl benzoic acid were identified simultaneously by gas chromatograghy. The above impurities were reacted with bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide in the mixture of internal standard solution and pyridine solution by trimethylsilylation, where the internal standard solution was made by 99% bis (trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide and 1% trimethylchlorosilane. The main organic impurities above mentioned can be analyzed quantitatively within 50 min.

  • The acid properties of $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_2$ catalysts and the partial oxidation of o-xylene into phthalic anhydride had been investigated in order to relate the acid property of catalyst to the catalytic activity. $V_2O_5$ had both weak (V=O) and strong (V-O-V) acid sites which gave pyridine desorption peaks at $230^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the amount of weak acid sites at $230^{\circ}C$ decreased with the increase of calcination temperature. On the other hand, the amount of weak acid sites increased considerably by increasing the amount of $TiO_2$ to the $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_5$, and the maximum value was shown at 20 and higher mole % of $TiO_2$ with respect to $SiO_2$. In the oxidation of o-xylene, $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_2$ enhandced more the total conversion and the selectivity to phthalic anhydride than $V_2O_5/SiO_2$, and the higher $TiO_2$ ratio to $V_2O_5$ increased the total conversion but could not change the selectivity to phthalic anhydride. Weak acid sites (V=O) led o-xylene to partial oxidation producing phthalic anhydride by adsorbing o-xylene weakly, while acid sites (V-O-V) led it to total oxidation producing CO and $CO_2$ by adsorbing it strongly.

  • Photoreactions of some carbonyl compounds with TiO$_2$ were investigated in methanol. Although 1,3-cyclohexanedione and phthalimide afforded 3-methoxy-2-cyclohexen-l-one and 3-methoxy-1-isoindolinone, respectively, acid anhydrides such as succinic, phthalic, and maleic anhydrides gave the monoesters of dicarboxylic acids in good to excellent yields, when they were irradiated on TiO$_2$ in methanol with 300 nm UV light.

  • Strain 88-GT-161 producing new phthalic acid derivative and basic macrolide antibiotics was identified as being S. melanosporofuciens based on numerical taxonomic data. However, 4 unit characters among 139 units were clearly different from the common properties of 6 strains belonging to cluster No. 32 represented by the name of S. violaceoniger or S. violaceusniger, leading us to designate as a variety of S. melunosporofaciens. This paper describes the taxonomic characteristics of the strain. Isolation and chemical structures, including biological activities of the active compounds produced by this strain will be presented elsewhere.

  • Because of their low surface free energy and absence of polar groups at the surface, polyolefins are substrates whose wetting and adhesion are very difficult. Free radical grafting of monomers to backbone polymer is one of the most attractive ways for the chemical modification of polymers. Synthesis of graft copolymer through graft polymerizations of PE and/or PP with phthalic anhydride (PhAn) was made and FTIR spectra of the graft polymer were the examined. And also the effects of phthalic anhydride content on the grafting ratio, thermal properties and contact angle of the graft polymer were examined.

  • - A phthalic acid derivative and basic macrolide antibiotics, with antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacteria and phytopathogenic fungi, respectively, were found to be produced by a strain 88-GT-161 identified as being a variety of Streptomyces melanosporofaciens. This paper describes an isolation procedure of the active compounds produced by this strain, their in vitro and in vivo (pot test) antimicrobial activites, and structure determination of one of the compounds, bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, a phthalic acid derivative antibiotic. This compounds, upon cornparision with authentic bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, revealed a difference in antimicrobial activity even though physico-chemical properties of these two compounds seemed indentical. This is the first report that dioctyl phthalate is biosynthetically produced by a Streptomyces sp. and shows antimicrobial activity.

  • A kind of Antihistamines, Azelastine HCl which known as modern H1-blockers, was synthesized by four step process using phthalic anhydride, 4-chlorophenylacetic acid, hydrazine 2HCl. The first step was the reaction of removing carboxyl group and hydroxyl group and the second step was saponification of 3-(4-chlorobenzylidene)phthalide. The third step was the nucleophilic addition reactions of primary amines and the fourth step was addition reaction of N-methyl-1-aza-bicyclo[3,2,0]heptane to 4-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1-(2H)phthalazinone. As a result, product was analyzed by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR and could be obtained with a yield of 80%.
