  • In this paper, two configurations of PV array are analyzed and tested under shading condition, where two configurations are series-parallel and total-crass-tied configuration. Each photovoltaic module is emulated by two 5 inch po1y-crystalline cells in series and an array is constructed by connecting 24 of the modules to compare a generated maximum power of the two configurations. Pspice and Sun simulator. PASAN IIIb, are used for simulation and experiment to test the array under various partial shading conditions. Test results show the total-cross-tied configuration generates 7.63% higher maximum power than the series-parallel configuration, and it is well matched to the analysis and simulations of the two configurations.

  • Photovoltaic(PV) array, which is generally installed outside, has the possibility to be damaged by high voltage due to lightning. Because the surge characteristics of PV array have not b eon fully Identified yet, there is a very important issue whether PV array should be connected with ground or not. In this paper, a basic model of PV array is provided considering the PV cell's barrier capacitance and ground capacitance for analysis of surge characteristics.

  • A novel simulation scheme of transient phenomenon for the photovoltaic (PV) generation system under the real weather conditions has been proposed in this paper. A grid connected PV array is simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC. The transient changes of the output current of PV array under the real weather conditions is described and the output current of DC/AC converter flowing through the utility power network is also analyzed with the PWM switching width. Moreover, the MPPT control of PV generation system is combined to the system during the simulation for the comparison purposes of the control schemes. The outcome of the simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme. The result shows that the cost effective verifying for the efficiency or availability and stability of PV generation systems and the comparison research of various control schemes like MPPT under the same real whether conditions are eventually possible.

  • Since solar cells have non-linear voltage-current output characteristics, Photovoltaic systems require the Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT) function. For this reason, a large number of MPPT techniques have been studied. However, the conventional MPPT techniques may fail to track the maximum power point when partial shading occurs in the solar cell array due to its characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to research the MPPT technique that can follow the maximum power point in the partial shadow condition. In this paper, the characteristics of solar cell arrays in partial shadowing are analyzed and the MPPT technique which can follow the maximum power point in partial shadow condition has been proposed. To validate the proposed MPPT method, simulation and experimentation results are provided.

  • In this paper, degradation in field-aged PV modules including degradation of interconnect, discoloration of encapsulant and hot spot have been observed and analyzed. From the results, photovoltaic module installed for 6 years shows around 16 % drop of electrical properties due to the interconnect degradation and PV module passed 18 years has been found to drop of around 20 % mainly by the encapsulant discoloration. Furthermore the difference between low and high temperature of PV array at hot spot goes up to 3$0^{\circ}C$ and it leads to interconnect degradation. On the other hands, the temperature difference was observed to be around 15$^{\circ}C$ at the encapsulant discoloration spot of PV array.

  • Tracking the Maximum Power Point (MPP) of a photovoltaic (PV) array is usually an essential part of a PV system. The problem addressed by Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques is to find the voltage $V_{MPP}$ or current $I_{MPP}$ at which a PV array should operate to generate the maximum power output $P_{MPP}$ under a given temperature and irradiance. MPPT control methods such as the perturb and observe method and the incremental conductance method require a microprocessor or DSP to determine if the duty cycle should be increased or not. This paper proposes a simple and fast analog MPPT method. The proposed control scheme tracks the MPP very quickly and its hardware implementation is simple when compared with the conventional techniques. The new algorithm can successfully track the MPP even in the case of rapidly changing atmospheric conditions. In addition, it has higher efficiency than ordinary algorithms.

  • The release of polluting gases such as NO/sub x/ of SO/sub x/ to the atmosphere from ships is causing increasing concern. To reduce destruction to the marine environment, the value of the utilization of photovoltaic energy is highly appreciated since photovoltaic energy is and alternate clean energy source to fossil fuels. The use of a photovoltaic generating system to supplement diesel engine driven electric power system on ships has been studied. The design of the photovoltaic generating system based on a photovoltaic array is presented in this paper. The amount of NO/sub x/ and SO/sub x/ emission is found to be significantly reduced for a small vessel operated within a harbour after a photovoltaic generating system is installed to supplement the diesel engine generator system.

  • Partial shading analysis of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) arrays has recently become a theoretically and numerically challenging issue, and it is necessary for PV system designers. The main contributions of this study are the following: 1) A PSIM-based macro-model was employed because it is remarkably fast, has high precision, and has no convergence issues. 2) Three types of equivalent macro-models were developed for the transformation of a small PV sub-array with uniform irradiance to a new macro-model. 3) On the basis of the proposed new macro-model, a tearing method was established, which can divide a large-scale PV array into several small sub-arrays to significantly improve the efficiency improvement of a simulation. 4) Three platforms, namely, PSIM, PSpice, and MATLAB, were applied to evaluate the proposed tearing method. The proposed models and methods were validated, and the value of this research was highlighted using an actual large-scale PV array with 2420 PV modules. Numerical simulation demonstrated that the tearing method can remarkably improve the simulation efficiency by approximately thousands of times, and the method obtained a precision of nearly 6.5%. It can provide a useful tool to design the optimal configuration of a PV array with a given shading pattern as much as possible.
