To identify the effects of air pollution on several physiological characteristics of Styrax japonica in Yeochon industrial comples soil properties photosynthetic capacity and chorophyll contents were investigated. All of these measurements were taken on Styrax japonica stand at 1. 3 and 7km from an industrial complex which is an air pollution source. In addition a Styrax japonica stand in Sang-ju city was selected as a control Each physiological measurement was in leaves of east-, west- south- and north-facing branches. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Al contents of soil in Yeochon industrial complex were higher than those of Sang-ju city a non-polluted area. higheral contents contributed to decrease in soil pH. 2) Chlorophyll contents of leaves at 1km from the industrial complex closest from the air pollution source were lower than those of 3 and 7km/ 3) Photosynthetic capacity of Styrax japonica at 1km from the air pollution source was lower than those at 3 and 7km.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of light intensity and temperature on the physiological characteristics and growth of ginseng leaves. The higher the transmittance of the shade, the greater the area was decreased. In contrast, however, the amount of transpiration was increased. There was no significant difference in the number of stomata, but the size of stomata was distinctively decreased. The higher the transmittance of the shade, the more the contents of total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a and b, and cartooned were decreased. In contrast, however, the aye ratio of chlorophyll was increased. Regardless of temperature, the contents of chlorophyll providing maximum photosynthesis at the end of June and August were 2.1mg and 1 8mg/g F.W. respectively.

This study examined the growth characteristics of broad-leaved container seedlings of Stewartia pseudocamellia, Tilia manshurica and Chionanthus retusus in relation to the raw material properties of the container medium in a green house for 4 months in order to develop optimum container medium for broad-leaved container seedlings. Among the container media used, the high level of the height growth and root collar diameter growth of broad-leaved container seedlings of Stewartia pseudocamellia, Tilia manshurica, Chionanthus retusus was found in the container media with relatively more cocopeat or peatmoss, and the dry matter production of the aerial part and the subterranean part. Also, concerning physiological characteristics, the photosynthetic rate of broad-leaved container seedlings increased in proportion to the volume of cocopeat and peatmoss in the container media. The effect of container media on the growth of broad-leaved container seedlings needs continuous study on the irrigation and fertilization programs along with the study on physiological characteristics including growth characteristics, biomass production and photosynthesis.

Street trees have been incorporated into urban forests to regulate the microclimate and provide shade as well as provide aesthetic and environmental functions and to evaluate their physiological characteristics. Zelkova serrata is a major tree species that has been planted on various South Korean streets. We determined the physiological characteristics of Z. serrata in street trees of Goyang and Paju in Gyeonggi Province. According to survey sites, net CO2 assimilation rates was 13.9-16.4 µmol CO2 m-2s-1, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was 0.80-0.82, and proline contents was showed 3.4-3.7 mg g-1 FW. The studied trees were assumed to be physiologically stressed, but it was found that Z. serrata was planted as street trees were not significantly stressed when compared to chlorophyll fluorescence responses and proline contents. In the future, the continuous monitoring system is needed to evaluate the physiological characteristics of urban trees.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of seasonal changes on some of the morphological and physiological characteristics, including the photosynthetic abilities and dark respiration, of young ginseng plants due to planting location under shading. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Seedlings and 2-year old plants planted in the back rows appeared to have broader leaf area, and their leaf weight greatly increased in September. Chlorophyll content was significantly reduced in September rather than in June and the plants in the back rows had more chlorophyll content than those in the front rows. 2. There was no difference in the light compensation point between the front and back rows in June, while in September the light compensation point of 2-year old ginseng leaves was much lower for plants in the back rows compared with those in the front rows. A difference in the light saturation point was not noticeable between plants in the front and back rows in June and September. But the light saturation point of 2-year old ginseng leaves at $15^{\circ}C$ was high in June, while it was high at $20^{\circ}C$ high in September. 3. Maximum photosynthetic ability was attained at $15^{\circ}C$ in June and at $20^{\circ}C$ in September. During June no significant difference in photosynthetic ability was found between plants in the front and back rows, but in September the amount of photosynthesis was significantly increased at the leaves of seedlings as well as 2-year old plants planted in the back rows. 4. The optimum temperature for maximum photosynthesis in 2-year old plants ranged from $14.0^{\circ}C$ to $14.5^{\circ}C$ in June and from $19.5^{\circ}C$ to $20.5^{\circ}C$ in September. However, the optimum temperature for maximum photosynthesis in the seedlings was from $21.2^{\circ}C$ to $21.6^{\circ}C$ in September, but a significant difference in the optimum temperature for the maximum photosynthesis in seedlings and 2-year old plants was not noticeable between the front and back rows. 5. The respiration rate was rather high in seedlings compared with 2-year old plants. During September the respiration rate in seedlings was much lower in the back rows than in the front rows. The rate of increase in the respiration of 2-year old plants was higher at September than June. The increase in respiration rate due to temperature was more significant in seedlings than 2-year old plants. 6. In September, the level of $Q_{10}$ in 2-year old plants was much lower than that found in seedlings. During June, 2-year old plants showed lower $Q_{10}$ levels at a temperature difference between $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$; but in September this occurred at a temperature difference between $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$.
The present study was to examine the effects of light, temperature, and water stress on the photosynthesis and respiration rates and its seasonal changes in 3-Year-old Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings raised in pot in nursery. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The estimated light compensation points at which net photosynthesis approached zero were 35 and $28{\mu}Em^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ for F. rhyrachophylla and F. mandsdzurica leaves, respectively, The light saturation points occurred at $700{\mu}Em^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ in these species. 2. The maximum rates of net photosynthesis of leaves occurred at about $25^{\circ}C$ in F. rhynchophylla and at $20^{\circ}C$ in F. mandshurica. 3. The decrease in net photosynthetic rates of leaves began at -13 bars in F. rhynchophylla and -10 bars in F. mandshurica, and then its rates approached approximately zero at -23 bars in F. mandshurica and -29 bars in F. rhynchophylla. 4. The dark respiration rates of leaves were similar from $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ between these species, Also these increased from -10 bars to -28 bars, and then decreased remarkably in these species. 5. The net photosynthetic rates of leaves of F. mandshurica were higher than those of F. rhynchoplaylla until June, and after that lower than F. rhynchophylla. The dark respiration rates of leaves of F. rhynchophylla were higher than those of F. mandshurica from June to August, and After that similar between these species. 6. The respiration rates of stem and root were highest in April during the growing season. These values of F. rhynchophylla were slightly higher than those of F. mandshurica throughout the growing season.

Physiological and biochemical changes of five species of genus Quercus exposed to ozone fumigation were investigated to assess their tolerance against ozone toxicity. At the end of 150 ppb ozone fumigation, chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic characteristics, malondialdehyde(MDA) and antioxidative enzyme activities were measured in the leaves of five Quercus species(Quercus acutissima, Q. aliena, Q. palustris, Q. serrata, and Q. variabilis). Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, net photosynthesis and carboxylation efficiency decreased after ozone treatment, indicating that $O_3$-exposed plants underwent physiological inhibition. The reduction rate of total chlorophyll contents and carboxylation efficiency were respectively 15% and 34% for Q. aliena and 38% and 62% for Q. variabilis. The amount of MDA increased with the highest increase rate of 140% in Q. acutissima which also showed the highest increase rate(60%) of superoxide dismutase(SOD). Ascorbate peroxidase(APX) activity increased in Q. variabilis, Q. serrata and Q. acutissima by ozone treatment. Based on our results, ozone tolerance of the five Quercus species was ranked as Q. aliena>Q. palustris>Q. serrata>Q. variabilis>Q. acutissima. We concluded that chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis, MDA content and antioxidative enzymes were the important physiological markers for tolerance against ozone stress, which were closely related with one another.
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), an annual plant of the family Malvaceae, is considered to be the most promising for alternative plants with potential use as a non-wood fiber source. The objectives of this study were to select the optimum seeding date and adaptable cultivar among newly introduced kenaf cultivars (Everglades-41, Tainung-2 and Chingpi-3) in Jeju island, and to clarify the photosynthetic characteristics of those cultivars. Among the three cultivars, the fresh shoot weight per unit area of Chingpi-3 at harvest season showed highest through all seeding dates, that of while Everglades-41 was the lowest. The difference of shoot yield at harvest mainly due to seedling stand rate and plant number per unit area among the cultivars. The Chingpi-3 showed the highest shoot fresh weight in the seeding date of May 11 and decreased trend in the late seeding dates. Net photosynthesis rate was higher on Everglades-41 with entire type leaf than other two cultivars with palmate type leaf. The activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/foxygenase (rubisco) estimated from the A-Ci curve showed highest in Chingpi-3 among three cultivars. These results suggest that Chingpi-3 might be adaptable cultivar with seeding date of around May 10 for kenaf production in Jeiu island.
Elephant food(Amorphophallus konjac K.) have been utilized its tubers in workedmaterials for a health and diet food. The author supposed that it was increased the area of cultivation and demand. This experiments were conducted to select the proper covering material during winter in order to increase yield of tubers and decrease input by 2 year's continuous cultivation, also to verified ability of seed germination and to measured efficiency of photosynthesis of plant. The proper covering materials for wintering were rice straw and rice hull. These materials were covered at 5 cm thick and at field was promoted according to emergence appearing after winter. The yields were 5,790kg /10a at 4,730kg /10a, respectively. Yield increase was 120% and 80% than that of control. The seeds collected at August 22 were germinated about 84 percent, and it was not necessary to treatment of low temperature or germination-accelerated chemicals. The widest leaf area was ranged $1,218-1,438cm^2$ at October 20 and was varied. The efficiency of photosynthesis was highest at 65-95 days after leaf emergence. The line of broad leaf and high photosynthetic efficiency per unit area was greater compare with yield. Therefore, it was supposed that these characteristics will use a marker for selection for high-yielding lines.
The influences of light generated by LEDs on shoot growth and photosynthesis of Tea plant(Camellia sinensis L.) were evaluated. The growth characteristics were investigated after 45 days of culture under four different light qualities: fluorescent lamp, red LED, blue LED, red+blue+white LED. Shoot growth was promoted by red light, especially root length and area were further promoted under the red+blue+white LED. Also, T/R ratio and Chlorophyll content were highest in red+blue+white. Fluor Cam was used to measure the fluorescence images of the plants, inhibition of photochemical efficiency(Fv/Fm) were not changed in all treatment. However, non-photochemical quenching(NPQ) were found rapidly increasing in blue LED, these results were that blue LED were inhibit photosynthetic efficiency and must be considered for efficiently in vitro cultivation of the tea plant. The above results suggest that light qualities could be an important factor to foster in vitro growth of the species. Also, In order to produce healthy plants, it is effective to using light qualities of red+blue+white LED on in vitro culture of the tea plant. These results could be used to mass propagating shoot and produce of healthy seedling.
