  • Background: To optimize the photon transmission efficiency of light guides used in scintillation detectors, LightTools code, which can construct and track light, was used to analyze photon transmission effectiveness with respect to light guides thickness. Materials and Methods: This analysis was carried out using the commercial light guide, N-BK 7 Optical Glass by SCHOTT, as a model for this study. The luminous exitance characteristic of the LYSO scintillator was used to analyze the photon transmission effectiveness according to the thickness of the light guide. Results and Discussion: The results of the simulations showed the effectiveness of the photon transmission according to the thickness of the light guide, which was found to be distributed from 13.38% to 33.57%. In addition, the photon transmission efficiency was found to be the highest for light guides of 4 mm of thickness and a receiving angle of $49^{\circ}$. Conclusion: Through such simulations, it is confirmed that photon transmission efficiency depends on light guide thickness and subsequent changes in the internal angle of reflection. The aim is to produce an actual light guide based on these results and to evaluate its performance.

  • A two-photon fluorescent probe (ACaCL) that can detect near-membrane $Ca^{2+}$ is reported. This probe can be excited by 780 nm fs pulses, shows high photostability and negligible toxicity, and can visualize near-membrane $Ca^{2+}$ in live cells and deep inside live tissues by two-photon microscopy.

  • Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPD) have become the most competent photon-counting devices in wide range of wavelengths. Especially in the communication wavelength (infrared), SNSPD has shown unbeatable superior performance compared to the state-of-art semiconductor single photon detectors. The technology has matured enough for the last decade so that several commercial systems are now almost ready for routine use in general optics experiments. Here we summarize briefly the recent progress in this research field, and hope to motivate further research on the improvement of the device and the system. We cover the basic key concepts, device and system performances, remaining issues and possible further research directions of SNSPD.

  • A split-column photobioreactor (SC-PBR), consisting of two bubble columns with different sizes, was developed to enhance the photon utilization efficiency in an astaxanthin production process from Haematococcus lacustris. Among the two columns, only the smaller column of SC-PBR was illuminated. Astaxanthin productivities and photon efficiencies of the SC-PBRs were compared with a standard bubble-column PBR (BC-PBR). Astaxanthin productivity of SC-PBR was improved by 28%, and the photon utilization efficiencies were 28-366% higher than the original BC-PBR. The results clearly show that the effective light regime of SC-PBR could enhance the production of astaxanthin.

  • L-Histidine tetrafluoroborate single crystals have been grown from the aqueous solution. The profitable pH value to grow large crystals, the relative flow rate to get clear crystals, crystals habit and the orientation of the obtained crystal have been clarified. We have also demonstrated that the LHBF crystal has very high damage threshold which is potentially good for generation of the phase conjugated waves.
