  • Magnum Korea, a 2008 exhibit at the Hangaram Art Museum in the Seoul Arts Center, introduced representative images of Korea to commemorate the 60th year of the founding of the nation. Twenty photographers of various backgrounds participated in Magnum Korea. This study focuses on one of the exhibited photographers, the French photographer Bruno Barbey. Born in Morocco, Barbey occupies a special position in today's modern photography not to mention in the Magnum group of traditional medium of photography. His photographic world is affiliated with the humanism of Robert Diosneau, particularly as his photographic medium is based on communication and code. Among the photographs in the Magnum Korea collection, Barbey's photographs can be organized into six different subjects: industrial structures in nature, industrial buildings, traditional relics of culture, terminals, markets and restaurants, and daily life. This paper takes special interest in Barbey's unique perspective on Korea's traditional cultural assets focusing on 'Seoul, Jogyesa'. What is the uniqueness of our culture as contained in Barbey's works? In other words, how did he capture the special characteristics of our culture that are often overlooked or ignored because they are so familiar to us? A semiotic approach is used to discover what common but special situations and realities of Korea attracted this photographer and how he managed to capture them in his photographs.

  • We propose a framework for grouping photographic advertising images that employs a hierarchical indexing scheme based on efficient feature combinations. The study provides one specific application of effective tools for monitoring photographic advertising information through online and offline channels. Specifically, it develops a preprocessor for advertising image information tracking. We consider both global features that contain general information on the overall image and local features that are based on local image characteristics. The developed local features are invariant under image rotation and scale, the addition of noise, and change in illumination. Thus, they successfully achieve reliable matching between different views of a scene across affine transformations and exhibit high accuracy in the search for matched pairs of identical images. The method works with global features in advance to organize coarse clusters that consist of several image groups among the image data and then executes fine matching with local features within each cluster to construct elaborate clusters that are separated by identical image groups. In order to decrease the computational time, we apply a conventional clustering method to group images together that are similar in their global characteristics in order to overcome the drawback of excessive time for fine matching time by using local features between identical images.

  • Eastman Kodak Co. has announced the concept of photo CD System in September, 1990 With Photo CD System technology, Kodak Co. Furnishes a convinent way to view, use and store photographic images. The heart of this system is a format provides progressively higher levels of image quality to meet the demands of NTSC, PAL and HDTV video displays as well as hard copy output. Also, image professionals are instrested in the capability of Photo CD, such as a way to store image at low cost in a high-resolution digital format that can be played back on different computer platforms. Many editors wish to use Photo CD images in the printing and publishing industry. However, Photo CD images were not processed detail enhancement and some others to use in the lithographic offset printing. Therefore, in this paper discribes a method to improve the sharpness of Photo CD images.

  • Astronomical plates have a very large density range (dynamical range). Many exposed astronomical photographic plates do not provide detailed structures for very high densities, and some include hidden images for very low densities. The former can be fixed through 'Unsharp Masking' technique and the latter through 'Image Amplification' technique. Besides, we can find intrinsic colors of celestial bodies through 'Tri Color Composition' technique. Images of several plates which were observed from Sobaek Observatory with 61cm telescope are reproduced by the three kinds of image reproducing techniques. As reproduced image examples, we display an Orion nebula and a waxing crescent moon images through unsharp masking technique and an M81 image through image amplification technique. An Orion nebula and a Dumbbell nebula images are also given as results of tri color composition technique.

  • In this paper, we conducted cross-cultural studies on digital images, which is an important element of the user interface. We brought in the schema theory to explain the cross-cultural difference in expressing and perceiving digital images. Participant-ethnography, in-depth interview, and card sorting were conducted to explore how expression and perception of images are influenced by schemas. Our results of qualitative studies indicate that there are differences in schemas between cultures depending on the topic of expression and perception. With these results, we suggest globalization and localization strategies for websites.

  • This research is aim to analyze of changing landscape and according to phenological cycle from image information of coastal environment obtained by multi-media were analyzed by camera and satellite image. The digital camera and satellite image were used for tidal flat vegetation monitoring during the construction of Sihwa lake. The vegetation type and phenological cycle of Sihwa tidal flat have been changed with the Sihwa lake ecosystem. The environment changes of Sihwa tidal flat area and ecological change were analyzed by field work digital camera images and satellite images. The airborne, UAV and satellite images were classified with the changed elements of coastal ecological environment and tidal flat vegetation monitoring carried out the changed area and shape of vegetation distribution with time series images.

  • In this paper. we propose a digital watermarking method for still images in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. The adaptive watermark insertion method in the high frequency region within a given image is employed to increase the invisibility of the inserted watermark in images, in which variable block-size method is used for selection of the high frequency region. Experimental results show that the proposed watermarking method is robust to several common image processing techniques. including joint photographic experts group (JPEG) compression, lowpass filtering, multiple watermarking, and croppIng.

  • For the effective management of medical images, it becomes popular to use computing machines in medical practice, namely PACS. However, the amount of image data is so large that there is a lack of storage space. We usually use data compression techniques to save storage, but the process speed of machines is not fast enough to meet surgical requirement. So a special hardware system processing medical images faster is more important than ever. To meet the demand for high speed image processing, especially image compression and decompression, we designed and implemented the medical image CODEC (COder/DECoder) based on MISD (Multiple Instruction Single Data stream) architecture to adopt parallelism in it. Considering not being a standard scheme of medical image compression/decompression, the CODEC is designed programable and general. In this paper, we use JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) algorithm to process images and evalutate the CODEC.

  • Virtual holography is a methodology of synthesizing apparent three-dimensional images from two-dimensional photographs. Since the input is photographic images of real objects, the degree of realism exceeds that offered by any computer-aided design software. The three-dimensional appearance is given in real-time by images from arbitrary viewing directions. If infinitely many photographs were taken and pasted together, virtual holography would have been trivial. But, the (infinite) storage requirement would prohibit such an attempt.
