  • The attitude of observer in the painting of history is to exclude a prejudice and a subjective view of an artist and to introduce a photograph, which is a record of objectivity, in the process of painting. Its ultimate intent is to redescribe the fact of an event's image intactly without any prejudice and to represent the event as a proven evidence that it was. The representation of history based on fact had already been conceived in imagination of renowned artists such as Francisco Goya or $Th{\acute{e}}odore$ $G{\acute{e}}ricault$ even before cameras were invented. What they portrayed was their own truth of reality which is gained through their observation, not a history that have corresponded to political ideologies, for all reliance on a limited tool of representation, painting. Furthermore, history was necessary for 19th century impressionism artists to be represented under proven fact in a neutral perspective excluding all subjective prejudice, not based on the representation with imagination. Edouard Manet in particular reconstited an instant moment on the basis of real proof of photograph without personal prejudice or opinion as if today's photojournalism. The catastrophic series by Andy Warhol and the photographic painting by Gerhard Richter show another role of painting in the realm of art, each of them implying information distortion and abuse by current media and intentional deformation toward history as Manet's painting of history. Today, the representation of an historical event that we experience in the era of the Internet and social networks having a great deal of information already came to be the exclusive property of the cutting edge mass media. Nevertheless, the attitude of observer which is realistic and contemplative in the realm of art is the crucial point in terms of artists' act as ever.

  • Describing the filmography of Yong-ho KIM simply in a few sentences is considered nearly impossible. For the last 20 years and longer, KIM has been building up his career energetically as he never lets himself obsessed with any particular boundaries or areas but work on everything from paper advertisements to art galleries, advertising photographs and pure photographs. The Photolanguage personally mentioned by Yong-ho KIM himself is to visualize this imaginary story in a form of photograph, which one would come up with before shooting. When it comes to the advertising photographs, since they are used basically to sell products, they are considered rather temporary, and in addition, they photograph the products mostly under these bright lights with colorful backgrounds behind. However, Yong-ho KIM was recognized for presenting very much different work as he went even beyond these old stereotypes of the advertising photographs. The advertising photographs processed by KIM do more than merely introducing details or functions of some products, but they deliver these values and cultures that consumers can enjoy and gain through these original stories about the products. Of several pieces of KIM's work, this advertisement on Hyundai Card named was invited to an exhibition by a private gallery after the work was exposed through various media. The work was even purchased, and that was something that had not happened before in the history of the relevant field. When a photograph is purchased, it makes the photograph recognized for its value to be possessed, and when a photograph is displayed, it, again, makes the photograph win recognition as an art work. This thesis discusses the Photolanguage found in the works of Yong-ho KIM, one of the most well-known advertising photographers in South Korea. The research inquiries that have been analyzed in the body of the thesis, therefore, are the photographs and language in the digital era, the story-telling advertisements and these works by Yong-ho KIM.

  • A photograph, which was applied to contemporary art, plays a very important role in the whole of the multiplied and diversified contemporary arts today. The application of photos, which were shown in contemporary art following the 1950s, can be classified into five types according to role and function of a photo in the process of developing a work. However, this classification is shown a little ambiguously. That is because photos of being utilized by artists are indicated very diversely depending on their artistic strategy and situation. As the first type, a few painters utilize a photo as mirror of reality in order to materialize a challenging and revolutionary idea with going against traditional picture in their pictorial practice. As the second classification, especially American painters utilize a photo as material component of forming their picture like photo-montage or collage. The combined application of this medium is first doing genre de-construction and hybridization of post-modernism in the 1980s while ultimately aiming at social criticism or political satire. The third type implies particularly a case that avant-garde artists utilize a photo as evidence of a work. In this case, a photo is employed as evidence of a work, which disappears in the temporal space essentially like body art, land art, and performance. Also, as the fourth type is a case of utilizing a photo for artistic concept of a work, not pictorial practice of picture, it is utilized often as important artistic strategy of conceptual artists. The final type of utilizing photo is a case of applying photo as formative tool on behalf of dye-stuffs or crayon in order to record a section of reality, which always continues regardless of event or meaning any more, in the traditional picture. In this case, a work is indicated as a photo of having a form of picture, namely, as Forme-tableau. The main subject is indicated there as a daily case of being repeated always the extremely common and revived theme.

  • The purpose of this article is to delve into the problems of originality of the artwork by examining issues of reproduction within the contemporary art market. In contemporary arts, especially in terms of art production and consumption, we can't overlook society and its economic structure and its connection with of capitalism. As the purity of art creation has turned into an exchange value, art, especially an object as artwork, has fallen into the status of production in an economic marketing system. Walter Benjamin mainly referred to that point in his thesis Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit, which originated the sociology of plastic arts. This thesis, published in 1936, traced how the artistic functions of photograph and movie had been changed through the social development. His main concerns were movie and photograph but what I am concentrating from his point of view, is that even in the field of plastic arts, the manufacture of reproduction has been practiced as a primary method within the social and political contexts and development. Though I am referring to this in the main body of this article, reproduction in contemporary art strongly needs a new definition since it has been spread all over like a newest virus, not only by collector's personal taste or hut also by commercial circulations of these reproductions to the public. This relates to Benjamin's argument about the value of an exhibition at a museum(Ausstellungswert). Since the function of an artwork has been one of cultural industry, the manufacturing of reproduction raises unexpected problems, such as, the originality of the artwork, the value of an exhibition at a museum, its achievement as documentary and as a territory of art criticism. In this point of view, I want to inquire into the value and criteria of an exhibition in contemporary art through the review of the definitions and the intrinsic attributes of reproduction. Somehow in a broad sense, the reproduction is a product coming out of representation or copy (replica) of an original art work or an model. Therefore, the problems it presents differ from the Simulacre, which is an image without an original one. In terms of the Meanings of reproduction, we can distinguish it as reproductions, copies, and productions. These types of reproductions are not the original artworks reflected by the creative intention of the artists. For example, a publishing company reproduced some of lithographs of Salvador Dali in the 1960s. They are commercial copies in the form of representation or reproduction with no artistic and creative intention of the artist. However, In despite of this theoretical basis, reproductions of the famous artists are still displayed without any verification for of the public's quest for the artworks. Moreover, many commercial companies that are planning to exhibit art works of the world-famous artists only for their profits keep trying to speak ill of and judging by the law the honest art critics' articles which discuss the true values of exhibition. If freedom of expression is one of the ideals of democracy, even the judgment of the originality of the artworks should be freely expressed.

Fashion photographs are historical documents presenting us with the evidence of the ideal body types and culture throughout time. Fashion photographs is direct information about the fashion itself, and at the same time, it transmits various circumstances of the times. Fashion photographs has opened a new aspect called visual communication, when it's seen in new, more profound way, instead of being locked in its visible frame. Photograph is no longer a mere means to preserve documentation or pursue artistic expression. Instead, it's now regarded as a way to pursue visual transmission owing to its cognitive psychology, and this is a remarkable step toward new thing. In this study, the possible visual information function of photograph was explored from diverse aspects, such as the combination of photo and design, its linking to printing technology's mass production function, or the development of its imagery symbolism. This study shows that the nature of deconstruction can be explained as deconstruction of the sexes, deconstruction of the time and space, and deconstruction of the genre.

  • Through the analysis of Gerhard Richter's works of art in the period of "fuzzy image", this paper expounds the special internal quality of fuzzy image in Richter's works and reveals an important direction of the development of contemporary easel painting, The special essence of Richter's vague image is that he uses photos to reflect the power and authenticity of the existence of the objective things. He was not satisfied with the radical way of modern painting and tried to return to the traditional way of painting, but in fact Richter kept a special distance between classical painting and modern art. Richter not only blurs the image in his creation, but also shows that he wants to show the objectivity of things, keep the distance, authenticity and give up painting. Richter used fuzzy images to capture the concept of "visual unconsciousness", and finally separated from the concept. When we read how Richter showed the reality of things in the way of painting, we also saw a kind of contradictory psychology when he faced the complicated objective.

  • Before the appearance of luc-media image, art is performed by the hands of man. That was the best of the reality and the absolute standard of reality. However the appearance of luc-media image brings together the scientific thoughts on realism, which gave birth to 'impressionism' where 'light' becomes the most important part in art as well as in luc-media image and analyzed scientifically. In this paper, I'd like to analyze 5 paintings of Monet, a representative of the impressionism, chronically and present the various aspects of luc-media image as follows; 'picture the present moment', 'picture the light', 'picture the sound and movement', 'picture in the several frames', 'picture continuous frames'. These image phenomenon presented in this paper are mainly concerned with the photograph image, because the time when impressionists entered the stage was the age of photograph image, accordingly there are a little difference from digital image.

  • Our time is called as the era of information-oriented society and up-to-date scientific technology, but it can be also called as the era of image. It is because the image has much influence upon our everyday life. In the deluge of images, the delivery of image Is a better and faster synergic tool than the delivery of language, and this trend is consistent with the phases of the times in which the analog modality of synergy is converted into the digital one. The image is a picture that is formed by a physical process, and is all the figures reflected by electronic equipments that reproduce the image. After the discovery of photograph in 1893, the image has been appeared first with the form of movie, and then with the form of TV. However, the appearance of such unidirectional synergic tools as movies and TV. has provided artists with some creative motives with which they intercommunicate their messages via some experimental bidirectional synergic tools. Among image-media arts, the performance of installation and participation is an important example that causes many changes through conceptional conversion, such as the conception of the time in space and formative characteristics. What satisfy this trend have been videos, lasers, holographic, and etc. Furthermore, the appearance of computer has provided a synesthesia, that is, a virtual reality, and mixed a real image with a visional one. The image-media art will realize better synergy through combining brand new machines, informational technology, and art, and have much influence upon our everyday life formatively and artistically in the future. with this study, through analyzing the meaning of relationship between image equipments and space.
