BACKGROUND: This study was performed to evaluate the effects of environmental factors and heavy metals on the growth and phosphorus removal capacity of Alcaligenes sp., which was well known as one of PAOs(Phosphorus Accumulating Microorganisms). METHODS AND RESULTS: The environmental factors used in this study were temperature, pH and carbon sources, and the heavy metals included Cu, Cd, Zn, As, and Ni. The growth and P removal efficiency of Alcaligenes sp. was maximal as temperature, pH, and carbon source were $25^{\circ}C$, 7, and glucose+acetate, respectively. Also, the $IC_{50}$(median inhibitory Concentration) values of Alcaligenes sp. for the Cu, Cd, Zn, As, and Ni were 5.03, 0.08, 0.73, 282.20 and 4.74 mg/L, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): Based on the results obtained from this study, it appears that the growth and P removal efficiency of Alcaligenes sp. were affected by the environment factors and at the best optimum condition for its growth and P removal efficiency, as the concentrations of heavy metals were gradually increased, its growth was correspondingly decreased.

The CellCaSi, a porous silicate material, was tested for the removal of phosphorus (P as phosphate) in water. The effect of the CellCaSi was investigated on the basis of both particle size (under 1,2, and 4 mm) and added amount (0, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 g/1) of the CellCaSi. The removal efficiency of phosphorus was highest with a particle size of under 1 mm and also increased with an increasing amount of the CellCaSi. The pH change showed little effect on the phosphorus removal of the CellCaSi. The calcium ion was eluted from the CellCaSi into the water, while the aluminium and iron were not. The eluted calcium ion was combined with dissolved phosphorus and then precipitated. The highest removal efficiency of phosphorus was obtained by the combined addition of the CellCaSi, calcium chloride, and ferric chloride. That is, the phosphorus concentrations of 0.10 and 1.0 mg/1 decreased to 0.03 and 0.47 mg/l by the addition of the CellCaSi (1 g/l), calcium ion (30 mg/l), and ferric ion (1 mg/l) at day 8 after treatment. The water qualities at the end of the experiment were as follows: pH was 8.1 and conductivity was 318 ${\mu}$S/cm (a registered maximum conductivity of 500${\mu}$S/cm for raw and potable wafers).

To consider the nutrient removal characteristics of BNR process activating soil microorganisms under the influence of DPB and to clear the characteristics of DPB under anoxic condition was investigated in the this study. The batch tests were conducted using sludge sampled from the BNR process activating soil microorganisms during operation periods. The results of this study were summarized as follows: - The DPB(Denitrifying Phosphorus removing Bacteria) performing denitrification and phosphorus uptake in the anoxic phase plays an important role in removing nitrogen and phosphorus in the BNR process activating soil microorganisms. - The PUR(Phosphorus Uptake Rate) of DPB in the anoxic phase was to be about 50% of PUR in the aerobic phase. - The DPB in the BNR process turned out to be increasing nutrient removal efficiency of BNR process.

Most of sewage treatment plants in Korea is operated for the removal of organic material. Because of low C/N ratio of domestic wastewater it is very difficult to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Therefore C/N ratio is key factor for the removed of nitrogen and phosphorus. PSB(photosynthetic bacteria) can remove the nutrient materials, so this study is focused on PSB characterization of nutrient removal. PSB is possible to remove nitrogen, phosphorus in anaerobic and aerobic condition. This study try to find out condition of the PSB in SBR reactor, Batch reactor. It consists of three Mode. Mode 1, 2 is to apply activated sludge process and Mode 3 is that seeded PSB in the activated sludge process. As a result of SBR process, Mode 1, 2 which was activated sludge Process showed $79\~90\%,\;66\~90\%$ of SCODcr, $94.67\~95.89\%,\;95.76\~98.56\%$ of TKN, and Mode 3 has $84\~92\%$ of SCODcr, $95.39\~99.52\%$ of TKN removal efficiency, respectively. When comparison with Mode 1, 2 and 3, most of nitrogen and phosphorus is removed at the anaerobic condition in Mode 3. but Mode 1, 2 has just revealed activated sludge process characterization. It would because of characterization of PSB.

This study evaluated the efficacy of Ti-based coagulants on phosphorus (P) removal from municipal wastewater and compared them with Al-based coagulants. Jar test experiments were performed at various chemical doses and OH/Ti molar ratio (B value). The higher the intial phosphate ($PO_4-P$) concentration, the lower the [Ti]/[P] to reach a residual concentration below 0.2 mg P/L. Removal efficiencies of total phosphorus increased with an increased coagulant dose but decreased after the efficiencies reached their maximum value regardless of coagulant or B value. On the other hand, $PO_4-P$ removal showed an increasing trend with an increased coagulant dose, reaching the plateau value under large coagulant dose conditions for both Ti- and Al-based coagulants regardless of B value. The chemical dose of Ti-based coagulants was approximately twice higher than that of Al-based coagulants with the same P-removal efficiency. The coagulation efficiency was influenced by different B values.
A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate nitrogen removal from plating wastewater by a soil reactor. A combination of soil, waste oyster shell and activated sludge were used as a loading media in a soil reactor. The addition of 20% waste oyster shell and activated sludge to the soil accelerated nitrification (88.6% ${NH_4}^{+}-N$ removal efficiency) and denitrification (84.3% ${NO_3}^{-}-N$ removal) in the soil reactor, respectively. In continuous removal, the influent ${NH_4}^{+}-N$ was mostly converted to nitrate nitrogen in the nitrification soil reactor and only a small amount of ${NH_4}^{+}-N$ was found in the effluent. When methanol was added as a carbon source to the denitrification soil reactor, the average removal efficiency of ${NO_3}^{-}-N$ significantly increased. The ${NO_3}^{-}-N$ removal by methanol addition in the denitrification soil reactor was mainly due to denitrification. The phosphorus was removed by the waste oyster shell media in the nitrification soil reactor. Moreover, the phosphorus removal in the denitrification soil reactor was achieved by synthesis of bacteria and the denitrification under anaerobic conditions. The approximate number of nitrifiers and denitrifiers was $3.3{\times}10^5\;MPN/g$ soil at a depth of $1{\sim}10\;cm$ and $3.3{\times}10^6\;MPN/g$ soil at a depth of $10{\sim}20\;cm$, respectively, in the soil reactor mixed with a waste oyster shell media and activated sludge.

To develop sewage treatment apparatus by natural purification method, the sewage treatment plant that consisted of aerobic and anaerobic plot was constructed. And then, the effects of treatment conditions on the removal of pollutants in the relation to sewage loading, sewage injection method and season according to the pebble kind. Removal rate of BOD and COD according to the sewage loading in effluent were over 95 and 77%, respectively. Removal rate of nitrogen in treated water by aerobic plot and effluent using sand were about 22~40 and 49~75%, respectively. Those of effluent using sand 75%+ oyster shell 25% and sand 50%+ oyster shell 50% as filter media in comparison with using sand were about 7~25 and 16~23%, respectively. Removal rate of phosphorus in treated water by aerobic plot and effluent using sand as filter media were about 30~36 and 52~56%, respectively. Those of effluent using sand 75%+ oyster shell 25% and sand 50%+ oyster shell 50% in comparison with using sand as filter media were about 11~40 and 12~45%, respectively. Removal efficiency of BOD and COD according to the intermittent injection method of sewage were slightly decreased, but those of nitrogen and phosphorus were little varied in comparison with continuous injection method. Removal efficiency of BOD and COD in winter in comparison with the others were little varied, but those of nitrogen and phosphorus slightly decreased.

By struvite and hydroxyapatite crystallization, was high concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater simultaneously. Particularly, removal of nitrogen and phosphate for crystallization have been applied to landfill leachates and animal wastewater. The purpose of this study is to decide the optimum struvite crystallization factors, sequence of $Mg^{2+}$ addition, pH control and the molar ratio of $Mg^{2+}$ over $PO_4^{3-}$. In conclusion, dosage of the magnesium followed by pH control formed magnesium hydroxide, so pH was decreased. Therefore, pH adjustment should followed by after magnesium dosage and then pH should be adjusted to 11. Over pH 10, it was not good for struvite crystallization efficiency by side reaction. Following of the $Mg^{2+}$ and the $PO_4^{3-}$ are dosed excessively, the removal efficiency of the $NH_4^+$ increased. A molar ratio of $Mg^{2+}:NH_4^+:PO_4^{3-}$, 1.3:1:1.3 was the most on effective for $NH_4^+$ removal at pH 9.5. But for the perfect removal $NH_4^+$, it is thought to be that molar ratio should be 2:1:2.

For waste water treatment, artificial wetland was constructed in 1998. The size of artificial wetland is 20m${\times}$200m, with sand and gravel as media and Phragmites japonica was implanted. The removal rate of BOD, TN, and TP were 86%, 33% and 25% from June 2004 to November 2005 respectively, while those were 88%, 38% and 55% in 1999. Organic materials and nitrogen compounds are still effectively removed, after 6 years of construction, but the removal efficiency of phosphorus compounds is reduced. So for sustaining of artificial wetland as waste water treatment system, the removal efficiency of phosphorus compounds must be elevated.

This study focuses on nitrification through a biological aerated filter (BAF) that is filled with a zeolite medium at low concentrations of ammonia. The zeolite medium consists of natural zeolite powder. The BAF is operated under two types of media, which are a ball-type zeolite medium and expanded poly propylene (EPP) medium. Nitrification occurred in the zeolite BAF (ZBAF) when the influent concentration of ammonia nitrogen was 3 mg L-1, but the BAF that was filled with an EPP medium did not experience nitrification. The ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency of ZBAF was 63.38% and the average nitrate nitrogen concentration was 1.746 mg/L. The ZBAF was tested again after a comparison experiment to treat pond water, and municipal wastewater mixed pond water. The ZBAF showed remarkable ammonia-nitrogen treatment at low concentration and low temperature. During this period, the average ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency was 64.56%. Especially, when water temperature decreased to 4.7℃, ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency remained 79%. On the other hand, the chemical-oxygen demand (COD) and phosphorus-removal trends were different. The COD and phosphorus did not show as efficient treatment as the ammonia-nitrogen treatment.
