Parametric study of brewery wastewater effluent treatment using Chlorella vulgaris microalgae

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomass and lipid production of Chlorella vulgaris and its nutrient removal capability for treatment of brewery wastewater effluent. The results indicate that the maximum biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (91.43%) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (83.11%) were removed by C. vulgaris with aeration in the absence of light. A maximum of 0.917 g/L of dry biomass was obtained with aeration in the dark conditions, which also demonstrated the highest amount of unsaturated fatty acids at 83.22%. However, the removal of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) with these aeration and light conditions was 9.7% and 11.86% greater than that of other conditions. The removal of BOD and COD and the production of biomass and lipids with aeration in the dark and the TN and TP removal with aeration and light were more effective than other conditions in the brewery wastewater effluent in the presence of C. vulgaris.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the contaminants removal efficiency and the optimal operating parameters by the internal recycle rate (IRR) in the combining A2/O process with fixed film. The average removal efficiency of BOD and COD was 92.5%~94.6%, 73.9%~87.0% in RUN 1 and 91.9%~94.7%, 77.7%~89.0% in RUN 2, respectively. Organic removal efficiency, at two different hydraulic retention time of 10 and 14hr, was similar. At 50% of the internal recycle rate, organic removal efficiency was somewhat higher than the other. Total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) were removed, highly, at 50% of internal recycle rate. It could be suggested by this study that the optimum internal recycle rate is 50% and hydraulic retention time is 14hr.

  • The treatment performances of anaerobic-aerobic activated sludge process were investigated under various operation conditions. The treatment system proposed in this study gave a relatively stable performance against hourly change of the flow rate and showed a satisfactory removal of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds under experimental conditions. The recycle ratio of mixed liquor from aerobic to anaerobic region and peak coefficient primarily controlled the extent of nitrogen removal. The recycle ratio had the optimum values which were determined by the microbial activities of nitrification and denitrification. The behavior of the treatment unit could be simulated by using the kinetic equations and reactor models which considered the treatment units as complete mixing tanks.

연속 회분식 반응조의 최적 운전시스템에 관한 연구 (Study on the optimum operation system of Sequencing Batch Reactor)

  • SBR process used to evaluate the removal of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus on the basis of a report of research on a precedence at various operation cycle and condition change. Effluent concentration of COD were 50mg/l, 50mg/l, 90mg/l respectively, The removal rates of COD were nearly over 95% at Run 1, 2 and 4. But at Run 3, Effluent concentration of COD was 255.0mg/l, The removal rate of COD was 87% at Run 3. As Oxic/Anoxic rate was fixed and operating cycle of Oxic/Anoxic was changed, the removal rates of T-N were 74.7%, 46.9%, 28.5%, 63.3% respectively at Run 1~4. The case of Run 1 was best result. The removal rates of T-P was appeared in proportion to T-N removal rates and rest of $NO_2-N$. The removal rates of T-P were 51.2%, 35.5%, 41.5%, 51.9% respectively. The removal rates of COD, T-N, T-P were influenced on the change of SBR operation cycle. As organic loading rate was $1.43kgCOD/m^3day$ and C/N ratio was 3.0, operation cycle of Run 1 was best condition of T-N removal rates and T-P removal.

외부탄소원을 사용한 SBBR의 공정 특성 및 질소제거 (Evaluation of SBBR Process Performance Focused on Nitrogen Removal with External Carbon Addition)

  • A sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) operated with a cycle of anaerobic - aerobic - anoxic - aerobic has been evaluated for the nutrient removal characteristics. The sponge-like moving media was filled to about 10% of reactor volume. The sewage was the major substrate while external synthetic carbon substrate was added to the anoxic stage to enhance the nitrogen removal. The operational results indicated that maximum T-N and T-P removal efficiencies were 97% and 94%, respectively were achieved, while COD removal of 92%. The observations of significant nitrogen removal in the first aerobic stage indicated that nitrogen removal behaviour in this SBBR was different to conventional SBR. Although the reasons for aerobic nitrogen removal has speculated to either simultaneous nitrification and denitrification or anoxic denitrification inside of the media, further researches are required to confirm the observation. The specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) test with biofilm and suspended growth sludge indicated that biofilm in SBBR played a major role to remove substrates.

산성광산배수 (AMD) 처리 부산물 ochre의 특성과 활용 (Characteristics of By-product Ochre from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Treatment and Its Potential Use)

  • 본 연구는 산성광산배수 (AMD)의 처리 과정에서 생성되는 부산물 ochre의 이화학성, 광물학적 특성 및 환경 분야 활용 가능성을 확인하기 위해 수행하였다. 이를 위하여 적극적 처리법인 물리 화학적 정화 처리시설에서 생성된 ochre-H와 수동적 처리법인 자연 정화 처리시설에서 생성된 ochre-D, ochre-S의 특성을 비교 분석하였다. Ochre-H는 광물 내 침철석 (goethite) 함량 및 철 성분 함량이 다른 시료에 비해 상대적으로 낮게 나타났지만, 소석회 내 칼슘 이온의 인 흡착 능력과 상대적으로 높은 흡착 표면적 등이 장점으로 작용할 수 있다. 또한 환경 생태계의 중금속 오염 가능성이 희박하고 물리 화학적 정화 처리시설에서 균일한 특성의 ochre를 대량 생산할 수 있으므로 실용적이며, 경제성이 높을 것으로 판단된다. Ochre-H의 인 흡착 특성은 Freundlich 흡착등온식모델에 적합하였다. 또한 ochre의 흡착 특성이 단분자층 흡착이 아닌 여러 분자층으로 흡착되어 매우 높은 흡착량을 가지기 때문에 인 출현곡선 (BTC)은 1이 아닌 0.3~0.4 상대농도 범위에서 평형에 도달하였다. 실제로 물 중 인 제거 능력을 평가한 실험에서 인 농도 외에 다른 오염원이 존재할 것으로 예상되는 수질 시료의 경우를 제외한 나머지 시료에서는 수질 및 수생태계 생활환경기준상의 인 농도 I 등급 기준치 이하로 검출되어 정화능력이 우수함을 확인하였다. 또한 정화 처리 과정 중 ochre내의 철 성분이 수질 내로 용출되는 양은 많지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 실험을 통하여 확인한 ochre의 높은 인 제거능력을 이용하여 부영양화 현상에 대한 정화제로 환경 분야에 적용하기 위해서는 오염원이 유입되는 하천 등의 위치를 정확히 파악한 후, 현장에 필터 형태의 pilot을 제작하여 설치하는 것이 중요하며, 또한 슬러지의 일종인 ochre 내 철 등으로 인한 수질오염의 발생 여부를 확인하여 유해하지 않음이 검증되어야 한다.
