The Processing of Livestock Waste Through the Use of Activated Sludge - Treatment with Intermittent Aeration Process -

  • To prevent surface and underground water pollution, wastewater treatment is essential. Four bench-scale activated sludge units (10 L operational volumes) were operated at 5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C$ for evaluation of treatment efficiencies with typical wastewater from swine housing. The units were set for a 24-hour cycle. As compared to the conventional process, high removal efficiencies for organic substances, nitrogen and phosphorus in swine wastewater were obtained simultaneously with an intermittent aeration process (lAP). The NOx-N produced during an aeration period was immediately reduced to nitrogen gas (e.g. $N_2$ or $N_2O$) in the subsequent non-aeration periods, and nitrification in aeration periods occurred smoothly. Under these conditions, phosphorus removal occurred with the release of phosphorus during the non-aeration periods followed by the excess uptake of phosphorus in the activated sludge during aeration periods. It was confirmed that the lAP had a better ability to remove pollutants under both low temperatures and high nitrogen loading conditions than the ordinary method did. In addition to that, the total emission of $N_2O$ from lAP was reduced to approximately 1/50 of the conventional process for the same loading. By adopting an adequate aeration programme for individual swine wastewater treatment, this system will provide a promising means for nitrogen and phosphorus control without pH control or addition of methanol.

FUNDAMENTAL STUDY ON THE RECOVERY AND REMOVAL OF WHITE PHOSPHORUS FROM PHOSPHORUS SLUDGE

  • Electro-thermal production of white phosphorus(WP, P4) generates substantial amount of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorus contents and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations in the United States. In this study, two different methods for treatment of phosphorus sludge were investigated. These were bulk removal of WP by physical separation(froth flotation) and transformation of WP to oxyphosphorus compounds by air oxidation in the sludge medium. Kerosene, among other collectors, resulted in selective flotation of WP from the associated mineral gangue. Solvent action of kerosene occurring on the WP surface(by rendering WP particles hydrophobic) might produce the high selectivity of WP. The WP recovery in the froth was 79.3% from a sludge assaying 34.2% of WP. In the oxidation study, air gas was dispersed in the sludge medium by the rapid rotation of the impeller blades. The high level of sludge agitation intensity caused a fast completion of the oxidation reactions and it resulted in the high percentage conversion of WP to PO4-3 with PO3-3 making up almost all portion of oxyphosphorus compounds. The WP analysis on the treated sludge showed that supernatant solution and solid residue contained an average of 4.2 μg/L and 143 ppm respectively from the sludge containing about 26 g of WP. Further investigation will be required on operational factors to better understand the processes and achieve an optimum condition.

  • Recently, as reinforced water quality standards for wastewater has been announced, more efficient and more powerful wastewater treatment processes are required rather than the existing activated sludge process. In order to meet this demands, we evaluate Task 1-4 about lab scale $A_{2}O$ process using biofilm media. Task 1, 2, and 3 use 'Module A' which has 4 partitions (Anoxic/Anerobic/Oxic/Oxic). Task 4 uses 'Module B' which has 2 partitions including a denitrification reactor with an Inclined plug flow reactor (IPFR) and a nitrification reactor with biofilm media. The denitrification reactor of Module B is designed to be upward flow using IPFR. The result of evaluating at each Task has shown that attached growth system has better capacity of removal efficiency for organic matter and nitrogen with the exception of phosphorus. Task 4 which has the most outstanding removal efficiency has 90.5% of $BOD_{5}$ removal efficiency, 97.8% of ${NH_4}^{+}-N$ removal efficiency, 65% of T-N removal efficiency and 92% of T-P removal efficiency with additional chemical phosphorus removal system operated at HRT 9hr, Qi:Qir 1:2, and BOD/T-N ratio 2.7.

제강 전로 및 고로 슬래그를 이용한 인제거 기법에 관한 기초연구 (Preliminary Study on The Development of Phosphorous Removal Process by Converter and Furnace Slags)

  • In this study, several series of experiments were conducted to investigate the phosphorus (P) removal process in slag-containing solution using furnace and converter slags. High amount of $OH^-$, $Ca^{2+}$ and alkalinity were discharged from the slags and hydroxyapatites [$Ca_5(PO_4)_3(OH)$] were kept accumulated on the surface of slag. P removal capacity of the slag decreased with the increase of slag dosage. The maximum capacity was found to be 11.25 mg/g at the converter slag. Converter slag adsorbed P more than furnace slag(about four times in average). An experimental study on the effect of pH shows that the percentage removal of P increased upto 30% at the pH range of 56 than that of above pH 8. Langmuir isotherm constants gave a better correlation than Freundlich ones. P removal amount in the presence of $NH^+_4$ was less compared to the one in the absence of $NH^+_4$. Maximum percentage reduction was 23%.

스트루바이트 생성을 통한 하수슬러지 탈수여액 내 인 제거 (Phosphorus removal from dewatering centrate in wastewater treatment by struvite formation)

  • 하수처리 탈수여액 내에 존재하는 고농도 인을 스트루바이트 생성을 통해 제거하기 위한 타당성 조사를 수행하였다. 혐기 소화를 거친 탈수여액 내에는 암모니아가 인산염 보다 높은 농도로 존재하므로 별도의 질소 투입 없이 마그네슘 주입과 pH 조절만을 통해 인 제거가 가능하였다. 인 제거 효율은 마그네슘 주입량, 교반 시간, 침전 시간, pH에 영향을 받았으며, 최적 반응 조건은 $Mg^{2+}/PO_4^{3-}$ 비 2 mol/mol 이상, 교반 시간 10분 이상, 침전 시간 120분 이상, pH 8.5 이상으로 도출되었다. 위 조건에서의 연속 운전 시 총인 제거율 80%, 인산염 제거율 82% 달성이 가능하였다. 침전물의 원소 조성과 결정 구조는 기존 보고된 스트루바이트와 유사하였다.

분뇨처리장 방류수를 정화하는 부들습지의 초기운영 단계에서 총인의 제거 (Total Phosphorus Removal in Cattail Wetland Purifying Effluent from a Night Soil Treatment Plant during Its Initial Operation)

  • Total phosphorus(TP) removal was examined in a surface-flow wetland constructed in April 2003 during its initial operating stage from June to November 2003. Its dimensions were 87mL by 14mW. It was a part of a four-wetland-cell treatment system constructed near the Kohung Estuarine Lake located in the southern part of Korea. Effluent from a night soil treatment plant was discharged into the wetland and purified effluent from the wetland was discharged into Sinyang Stream flowing into the Lake. Cattails(Typha angustifolia ) from natural wetlands were cut at about 40 cm height and transplanted into the wetland. An average of 25.0$m^3$/day of effluent flowed from the plant into the wetland. Water depth was maintained about 0.2m and hydraulic detention time was about 5.2 days. Average heights of the cattail stems in June and October 2003 were 47.2 and 164.6cm, respectively. The average number of stems was 10.2 stems/$m^2$ in June 2003 and 18.8 stems/$m^2$ in October 2003. Average temperature of influent and effluent ranged 23.4 and $24.2^{\circ}C$, respectively. The average TP concentrations of influent and effluent were about 1.31, 0.50mg/L, respectively. TP loading rate of influent into the wetland averaged 26.81mg/$m^2$, day and average TP loading rate of effluent was 10.04mg/$m^2$, day. Monthly average TP removal by the wetland during the warm growing season of cattails(June to September) ranged 16.28~19.57mg/$m^2$, day and during the cold senescent period (October to November) ranged 12.62~13.90mg/$m^2$, day. TP removal in the wetland continued during the cold winter months and was primarily done by sedimentation and precipitation of phosphorus rather than phosphorus absorption by cattails and microorganisms.

알루미늄 부식을 조합한 간헐폭기 활성슬러지 공정에서 질소와 인의 동시 제거 (Simultaneous Removal of Phosphorus and Nitrogen by Intermittently Aerated Activate Sludge combined with Aluminum Corrosion)

  • A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate phosphorus and nitrogen removal from synthetic wastewater by intermittently aerated activated sludge process packed with aluminum and silver plate. Three continuous experi­mental processes, i. e. an intermittently aerated activated sludge process(Run A), an intermittently aerated activated sludge process with an aluminum and silver plate packed into the reactor(Run B), and a reactor post stage(Run C) were compared. In the batch experiments, the phosphorus removal time in the reactor packed with aluminum and silver plate simultaneously was faster than that of the reactor packed with only an aluminum plate. More phos­phorus was removed with an increase of NaCl concentration. The pitting corrosion of aluminum does not affect the performance of the biological treatment. The total nitrogen removal efficiency in Run B was $57\%\;and\;43.6\%$ at the HRT of 12 and 6 hours respectively. The effluent $PO_{4-}P$ concentration as low as 1.0 mg/L could be ob­tainable through the continuous experiment in Run B at HRT of 6 hours.

인공습지에서 오염물질 제거기작 및 국내외 연구동향 (Removal Mechanisms for Water Pollutant in Constructed Wetlands: Review Paper)

  • 최근 국내에서 인공습지는 하 폐수처리장 방류수의 후처리, 비점오염원 관리, 생태하천 복원 등 다양한 용도로 적용되고 있다. 그러나 인공습지가 설치되는 지역의 기후, 유입수의 특성, 지역적 특성 등에 따라 매우 영향을 많이 받기 때문에 인공습지 내에서의 오염물질의 제거기작은 확실하게 이해되고 있지는 않다. 그러므로, 이 연구에서는 인공습지 내에서 질소, 인을 중심으로 한 오염물질의 제거기작을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 질소 제거의 주된 기작은 인공습지 내의 근권(rhizosphere)에서의 질산화/탈질에 의한 것으로 판단되며, 인 제거의 주된 기 작은 인공습지내 여재 등의 기층(substrate)에서의 흡착에 의한 것으로 판단된다. 그러나, 인공습지내의 인의 거동은 산화/환원 전위(ORP), 흡착/탈착, 미생물의 작용 등에 따라 다양한 형태를 가질 수 있는 것으로 판단된다.

폭기 에너지 저감 연속회분식반응조 운전과 미생물 군집 변화 특성 (Performance of sequencing batch reactor under aeration-limited condition and characteristics of microbial community change)

  • Recent focus on wastewater treatment includes energy-saving and renewable energy generation for energy-independence of water infrastructures. Aeration and pumping in biological wastewater removal processes account for nearly 30-60% of the total electricity cost in real wastewater treatment plants. In this study, the performance and microbial characteristics were investigated in sequencing batch reactor under typical oxygen and oxygen limited condition. Under typical DO ($7.55{\pm}0.99mg/L$) and low DO ($0.23{\pm}0.08mg/L$) conditions, COD removal was stable over 91 % during SBR operation. Ammonia removal efficiency was reduced from 95.6 % to 89.2 % when DO concentration was dropped sharply. Phosphorus removal efficiency also reached 77% at oxygen-limited condition. The results indicated that removal efficiency both ammonia and phosphorus was influenced by DO condition. Microbial analysis revealed that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes at phylum level was dominant in typical DO and low DO conditions and DO concentration did not much affect phylum distribution. Population decrease of genera of nitrifying bacteria(Dokdonella) and Dechloromonas spp. affect removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus at low DO condition.

환경인자와 중금속이 Alcaligenes sp.의 생장과 인 제거에 대한 영향 (Effects of Environmental Factors and Heavy Metals on the Growth and Phosphorus Removal of Alcaligenes sp.)

  • Alcaligenes sp.의 인 제거에 대한 환경인자로 각각 온도, pH, 탄소원의 효과를 알아본 결과 $25^{\circ}C$, pH 7, glucose+acetate이 탄소원일 때 인 제거효율이 가장 좋은 것으로 확인 할 수 있었다. 5가지 중금속의 독성효과에 따른 Alcaligenes sp.의 생장은 중금속의 농도가 높아질수록 억제되었으며, $IC_{50}$값은 구리 5.03 mg/L, 카드뮴 0.08 mg/L, 아연 0.73 mg/L, 비소 282.20 mg/L, 니켈 4.74 mg/L로 나타났다. 모든 중금속의 농도가 높아질수록 생장이 억제되어 인 제거 역시 억제되는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다.
