A survey on four tributaries along with Mankyeong River was carried out to get the information far the water quality improvement and control. Typical paddy farming were major agricultural practices in Kosancheon and Soyangcheon. Iksancheon was livestock raising watershed. Chucheon was urban watershed. Water quality in six sites of main stream and four sites of tributaries in Mankyeong River were investigated from May to August in 2001. The concentration of nutrient in main stream of Mankyeong River were in the range of 3.78$\sim$12.68 mg/L for total nitrogen, 0.043$\sim$0.864 mg/L for total phosphorus, 2.59$\sim$13.29 mg/L for BOD and 12.9$\sim$119.5 mg/L for COD, respectively. Water quality of Mankyeong River mostly exceeded the standard water quality criteria of Korea. Major causes of water pollution were evaluated as sewage of swine and urban area. Among the four tributaries, water quality in agricultural practices, Kosancheon and Soyangcheon was relatively less polluted. While, the highest level of water pollution measured in Iksancheon was due to livestock. The water quality of Iksancheon and Chucheon was generally more polluted in the dry period than in rainy period.
This study was taken to examine serum components concentrations and electrophoretic patterns of female tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus) living in 0$\textperthousand$, 10$\textperthousand$, 20$\textperthousand$, and 30$\textperthousand$ salt concentrations, respectively. The results obtained in these experiments were summarized as follows. The level of albumin and total protein showed changes in each salinity, but didn't significantly(P<0.05) change in Oreochromis niloticus. The level of BUN didn't significantly(P<0.05) change. When fish were adapted from 0$\textperthousand$ to 10$\textperthousand$, 20$\textperthousand$ and 30$\textperthousand$, each calcium level in every salinity groups showed less than that of control, and didn't significantly change in 10$\textperthousand$, 20$\textperthousand$, 30$\textperthousand$ salinity. The level of calcium didn't significantly(P<0.05) change in each salinity. In 20$\textperthousand$ salinity, the level of cholesterol was at the highest peak. When fish were adapted from 0$\textperthousand$ to 10$\textperthousand$, 20$\textperthousand$ and 30$\textperthousand$, each glucose level gradually decreased. When fish were adapted from 0$\textperthousand$ to 10$\textperthousand$, 20$\textperthousand$ and 30$\textperthousand$, each glucose level gradually decreased. When fish were adapted from 0$\textperthousand$ to 10$\textperthousand$, 20$\textperthousand$ and 30$\textperthousand$. In 30$\textperthousand$ salinity, the level of alkaline phosphatase was at the highest peak. The level of serum enzyme such as SGOT and SGPT was higher in seawater-adapted group than in freshwater group. The level of phosphorus chnage significantly(P<0.05) in each salinity. Correlation coefficient between serum albumin and glucose in 0$\textperthousand$ was +0.924. Correlation coefficient between serum SGOT and SGPT of individuals in 0$\textperthousand$ was +0.917. Fraction 1 of transferrin patterns of tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus) adapted in seawater was much thicker than that of transferrin patterns of individuals adapted in freshwater. Also fraction No. a wasn't observed in some individuals adapted in freshwater. These results showed that transferrin adapted in seawater relatively increased. Slight differences, that is, showed to be observed in total iron binding capacityand iron saturatin rate between tilapia adapted in freshwater and in seawater. The increase in total iron binding capacity was attributed to a rise in transferrin pressent in the first fraction of serum protein adapted in seawater. Accordingly, the serum iron levles seemed to be related to salinity($\textperthousand$).

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (CDDGS) in broiler diet on ileal amino acid digestibility and broiler performance. In experiment 1, TMEn of CGGDS ranged from 2,863 to 2,976 kcal/kg and averaged 2,904 kcal/kg on an 86% DM basis. In experiment 2, 192 male Ross broilers (one-day-old) were assigned randomly to 4 dietary treatment groups (12 birds/pen, 4 pens/treatment) as CDDGS levels (0, 6, 12 and 18%) and fed experimental diets for 6 weeks (starter ($0{\sim}2wk$); grower ($2{\sim}4wk$); finisher ($4{\sim}6wk$)). There was no difference in BWG of the chicks. However, feed intake and feed efficiency of chicks fed with non CDDGS groups were better than those of chicks fed with CDDGS fed groups (P<0.05). The amino acid digestibilities of diets containing CDDGS were high for phosphorus but low for lysine, threonine, aspartic acid, cystine and glycine (P<0.05) in the treatments compared to those of the control diet. This study showed that CDDGS has a high ME value and the treatments were low for the ileal amino acid digestibility, but there was no effect on the broiler performances.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of zeolite on the reduction of soil EC level in the plastic film house. The EC level of experimental soil was 5.0 dS $m^{-1}$ and the zeolite was applied to the soil at seven levels (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20%) with three replications. The reduction degree of soil EC level showed positive tendency to the mixing ratio of zeolite. Especially, the EC level reduced rapidly from 5.01 to 2.8 dS $m^{-1}$ in the plot where zeolite was mixed by 20% 10 days after treatment. The pH level of soil was in positive relation to the mixing ratio of zeolite, contrary to the negative relation to the concentration level of water soluble Ca, Mg and phosphorus (P). The water contents of soil mixed with 15% and 20% zeolite were 14% and 17.3% respectively but it was 12.7% for control soil. Therefore, we expect natural zeolite to salts reduction agent for exchangeable cation and phosphate which is difficult to reduce by watering and other methods.
There is an increasing concern over arsenic (As) contamination in rice. This study was conducted to develope a prediction model for As uptake by rice based on the physico-chemical properties of soil. Soil and brown rice samples were collected from 46 sites in paddy fields near three different areas of closed mines and industrial complexes. Total As concentration, soil pH, Al oxide, available phosphorus (avail-P), organic matter (OM) content, and clay content in the soil samples were determined. Also, 1.0 N HCl, 1.0 M $NH_4NO_3$, 0.01 M $Ca(NO_3)_2$, and Mehlich 3 extractable-As in the soils were measured as phytoavailable As concentration in soil. Total As concentration in brown rice samples was also determined. Relationships among As concentrations in brown rice, total As concentrations in soils, and selected soil properties were as follows: As concentration in brown rice was negatively correlated with soil pH value, where as it was positively correlated with Al oxide concentration, avail-P concentration, and OM content in soil. In addition, the concentration of As in brown rice was statistically correlated only with 1.0 N HCl-extractable As in soil. Also, using multiple stepwise regression analysis, a modelling equation was created to predict As concentration in brown rice as affected by selected soil properties including soil As concentration. Prediction of As uptake by rice was delineated by the model [As in brown rice = 0.352 + $0.00109^*$ HCl extractable As in soil + $0.00002^*$ Al oxide + $0.0097^*$ OM + $0.00061^*$ avail-P - $0.0332^*$ soil pH] ($R=0.714^{***}$). The concentrations of As in brown rice estimated by the modelling equation were statistically acceptable because normalized mean error (NME) and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) values were -0.055 and 0.2229, respectively, when compared with measured As concentration in the plant.
The object of this study was to analyze long-term water quality gradients during 1992-2008 at six sites of Geumho River and near-by two sites of Nakdong River and their influences on fish trophic guilds and tolerance guilds along with ecological health. Water quality including biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), conductivity, total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and total suspended solids (TSS) varied largely depending on the sampling locations and seasons. Values of ambient BOD, COD, TP, and TN were greater in the downstream than in the upstream reach, and seasonal and interannual variabilities were also higher in the downstreams. This phenomenon was evident due to a dilution by the Asian monsoon rainfall during the monsoon. These outcomes indicate that point sources near the downstream are important for the chemical conditions, but also seasonal stream runoff was considered as an important factor regulating the chemical conditions. Conductivity decreased rapidly during the summer due to ionic dilution, and nutrients (N, P), BOD, COD had an inverse function of seasonal precipitation. Based on the water quality, we selected two sites (control site = $C_s$ vs. impacted site = $I_s$) for impact analysis of water chemistry on fish community and trophic/tolerant guilds. Fish guild analysis showed that species diversity was higher in the headwater stream ($C_s$) than the impacted downstream ($I_s$), and that the proportion of tolerant and omnivore species were greater in the impacted site of downstream. Comparisons of water quality between Geumho River and Nakdong River indicated that Geumho River was considered as a point source which degradated water quality to the Nakdong River. Overall, chemical water quality and fish guild analysis suggest that even if current chemical quality got better after 1996 due to continuous constructions of wastewater disposal plants near the downstreams, fish compositions of tolerant and omnivores were still dominated the community. Thus, biological restoration based on ecological health is required for the ecosystem conservation.
A phosphate solubilizig bacterium, Pantoea agglomerans, was isolated from rhizosphere soils collected from Chungbuk area. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effect of combined application of rock phosphate and P. agglomerans inoculation on plant growth and phosphate accumulation of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Apart from control that received no inputs, six treatments were planned as follows; 1) seed bacterization, 2) free cell inoculation and 3) bacteria immobilized beads inoculation, individually and in combination with 1 and 2.5 g of rock phosphate per pot. The results showed that plant growth and phosphate uptake were significantly enhanced as a result of bacterial inoculation. Bacterial inoculation in the form of immobilized beads and 1 g of rock phosphate was found to affect positively the rice plant growth and phosphorus accumulation than other treatments. The available phosphate concentration of the pot mixture also found improved as a result of P. agglomerans inoculation. A positive correlation was observed between the phosphate concentration in the pot mixture and phosphate accumulation in plant.

We have studied effect of water treatment sludge (WTS) on trace metals of sorghum hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). In the present report it was for cadmium (Cd) content on background correction (BGC) mode with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The four treatments were Control, Compost, Alum + nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK), Compost + NPK. In the analysis, burner height of the atomic absorption spectrophotometer was adjusted to three levels; 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm. As a conclusion, 3 mm and 6 mm burner height conditions were better than 9 mm height for Cd analysis. And the conditions for widening the range, the mean, and the standard deviation (SD) values of observed absorbances as well as the condition for lessening the mean of observed background values are necessary for getting the better measuring of Cd. At the present experiment, 6 mm burner height condition is the best among the three burner heights.

Effect of Water Treatment Sludge(WTS) on trace metals content in Sorghum(Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench) was investigated. At this report measuring of nickel(Ni) content of the forage was presented. Four treatments, Control, Compost, Alum+(nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium)(NPK), Compost+NPK, were applied to the sorghum in a mountainous place near the Joongbu University. With the 1, 3, 5 hours conditions, the background value was the least on the 5 hours warming up of the AA-680 spectrophotometer, and on the condition(mean/SD) of absorbances of Ni observed was the most. It is necessary in Ni analysis warming up for longer period around 5 hours for this type of apparatus. And we think that the difference of warming time for Ni analysis in order to carry out better measuring; the reason might be the larger bonding energy of Ni than those of Cu, calcium(Ca), magnesium(Mg) and (potassium)(K).

A total of 120 pigs were used to investigate the effects of yucca extracts on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility and excretion of growing pigs fed different levels of dietary protein. Pigs were allotted into $2{\times}3$ factorial design by the supplementation with yucca extract (YE, 0 and 120 mg/kg) and 3 levels of dietary protein (16, 18, 20%). During the whole experimental period (18 to 52 kg body weight), there were no significant differences in ADG, ADFI or F/G by YE addition or different protein levels among treatments (p>0.05). Overall, although addition of YE to the diet and elevation of protein level showed better ADG, there were no significant differences in growth performance among treatments. Pigs fed diets with YE showed significantly (p<0.05) higher dry matter (DM), crude ash (CA) and crude protein (CP) digestibility than did the others during the growing period. Concerning the levels of dietary protein, only the CP digestibility was significantly higher in pigs fed high protein diet. Pig fed the low protein diet without YE showed a significantly low CP digestibility (p<0.05). No significant differences were found in crude fat (CF), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) digestibilities regardless of YE supplementation or dietary protein levels. Pigs fed YE supplemented diets showed significantly (p<0.05) higher amino acid digestibility. Also, high CP level diets showed a higher amino acid digestibility than low CP diets (p<0.05). DM and N excretion did not show any significant differences among treatments, there was a slightly lower excretion with increase in dietary protein level. Supplementation with YE significantly decreased the DM and N excretion. Interaction (YE$\times$protein) was found in P excretion. Pigs fed a medium protein diet without YE showed the lowest P excretion during the growing period. The NH3-N content in the feces tended to be increased by the increased dietary protein levels and with YE supplementation. During the whole experimental period, the cost for YE supplementation was similar to value of the improvements of performance obtained. The cost of feeding high level protein was significantly higher than that of medium level protein by 10% and low level protein by 9% (p<0.05). It could be concluded that the effects of dietary protein level and yucca extract on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and excretion might play a role to some extent in growing pigs from the aspect of pollution control.
