This study was done to find chemicals adequate to control alkalinity and hardness in order to reduce dissolved phosphorus in water bodies like rivers and lakes. Five chemicals were selected for the study: calcite, lime, dolomite, magnesite, and gypsum. Data were obtained from the calculations with MINTEQ model as a function of dosage variations of each chemical. Findings are as follows: Three out of the five chemicals are found to be effective in reducing the dissolved phosphorus, i.e., calcite, lime, and dolomite. Calcite and dolomite are able to lower the phosphorus concentration up to one thousandth fold whereas lime does one hundred thousandths fold. In viewpoint of pH variation, both calcite and dolomite seem to be safe since the pH does not increase over 8.3 even in case of overdose. In the same circumstance, with lime the pH increases beyond 9 which is considered to be the highest pH level for the protection of water ecosystem. Nevertheless it is recommendable to use lime in case where there are some difficulties in water quality control due to algae blooms.
Elemental cellular stoichiometry of natural phytoplankton communities was examined in six large dam reservoirs in the Han River system. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents of the phytoplankton-dominated seston from Lake Soyang was higher than that from other lakes. Phosphorus (P) content showed slight variations among six lakes in the range of $0.04{\sim}0.18{\mu}mol$ P mg $DW^{-1}$. The phosphorus concentrations of lake water showed obvious positive relationship with P and C contents of the phytoplankton-dominated seston. In all six lakes, N:P ratios and C:P ratios in the phytoplankton-dominated seston were more than 23 and 133 respectively, indicating the phytoplankton communities in six lakes have been exposed in phosphorus limited condition. The relative abundance of diatoms showed significant negative correlation with C, N, P contents of the phytoplankton-dominated seston and that of cyanobacteria showed significant positive correlation. Elemental stoichiometry of diatoms-dominated seston showed distinctive less content than that of cyanobacteria-dominated seston. The cellular N:P ratios of diatoms- and cyanobacteria-dominated seston indicate that both main classes of phytoplankton in six lakes are in phosphorus deficiency. Elemental stoichiometry of the phytoplankton-dominated seston in this study could be used for the further ecological stoichiometric studies in six lakes.
Three hundred and twelve female Tsaiya ducks from four lines (L1051, L1052, L1053 and L1054) were used in this study to investigate the changes in plasma calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels, blood pH, carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO$_{2}$), bicarbonate ion concentration ($HCO_{3}^{-}$), and base excess (BE) during laying periods. The results indicated that plasma calcium and inorganic phosphorus concentration at 40 and 50 wks of age were higher (p<0.05) than those at other ages. Significant positive correlation coefficients were found between plasma calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels at each age tested from 20 to 50 wks. Ducks from L1053 showed lower (p<0.05) blood pH, BE and $HCO_{3}^{-}$ as compared with other lines. Ducks from L1054 had higher (p<0.05) blood pH, BE and $HCO_{3}^{-}$ than those of other lines showing that there were some differences on blood parameters among lines. Eggshell strength decreased with age up to 65 wks and remained constant thereafter. Egg weight increased gradually from 30 to 60 wks and decreased slightly after 70 wks of age. Plasma inorganic phosphorus level in 40 and 50 wks old birds was positively correlated with eggshell strength, while blood $HCO_{3}^{-}$ in 40 and 50 wks old birds was negatively correlated with eggshell strength.
A laboratory experiment was coducted to investigate the relation of various soil phosphorus and some soil chemical properties which affect the composition of inoganic phosphorus and soil phosphorus with 149 phosphorus accumulated soil samples. Soil pH and exchangeable Ca were showed positively high significant correlation with 1.25 $N-NH_4$ OAc-P, Saloid-P, Ca-P and Total-P, however the soil pH was not showed significant relationship with $0.01M-CaCl_2-P$, Al-P, and Fe-P, respectively. Active Al and available phosphorus, water soluble P, and inoganic phosphorus were showed negatively high significant correlation, but Al-P and Fe-P were not. Also active Fe were showed positively significant correlation at 1% level for Fe-P and total-P. In the relationahips between soil pH and active Al, and exchangeable Ca, active Al were showed negatively high significant correlation with log regression equation, and exchangeable Ca were showed positively high significant correlation with liner regression equation. P sorbed by soil from p 20ppm solution was showed negatively high significant correlation with available phosphorus, water soluble P and $0.01M-CaCl_2-P$ in soil and positively with active Al, but was not significant with Ca-P.
Seasonal changes in pool size, inflow rates in biomass and phosphorus, and the efficiency of phosphorus use in the stand of three populations (Helianthus tuberosus, Artemisia princeps and Phalaris arundinacea) in the basin of the Mt. Geumoh were investigated. During the early growing period, in the three species populations the relative size of the phosphorus pool of population was larger then that of its biomass pool, but that of the phosphorus pool of belowground part decreased more rapidly than that of its biomass pool. In the A. princeps and P. arundinacea populations, the phosphorus inflow rate was markedly high during the soil thaw in early spring and its seasonal change pattern was different from that of the biomass production rate, showing two peaks in March and June. But in the H. tuberosus population, the two seasonal change patterns were alike. The annual biomass production was 2283 gDM m-2 in the H. tuberosus, 1884 m-2 in the A. princeps and 1879 gDM m-2 in the P. arundinacea population, and the annual phosphorus inflow was 11.35, 9.63 and 7.60 gP m-2, respectively. The P. arundinacea population showed the smallest LAI peak(5.4 in early June), and the largest NAR peak (36.9 gDM m-2wk-1) RGR peak (0.15g g-1 wk-1) among the three species populations. The seasonal change patterns in whole plant EPU of the three species populations showed the bell shape, but the annual EPU values among them were markedly different. It was noticed that the population with the highest RGR showed the highest EPU among the three species populations while the population with the lowest RGR showed the lowest EPU among them.
Soybean plants inoculated Bradrhizobium japonicum MN 110 were grown in outdoor perlite pots with nitrogen free nutrient solution containing 1.0 mM-P(control) and 0.05 mM-P(stress) and harvested at 28, 35, 42 and 49 days after transplanting (DAT) to examine the effect of phosphorus deficiency on ureide concentration of and distribution to diffrent plant organ in nitrogen fixing soybean plant during the vegetative growth. Total dry mass of control plants increased 8.9 fold and that of phosphorus deficient plant increased 2.7 fold during the experimental period. Phosphorus deficiency reduced total phosphorus and nitrogen accumulation by 80%,40% respectively, at 28 DAT and 93%, 84%, respectively, at 49 DAT. Nitrogen concentration was reduced by phosphorus deficiency in all tissues with leaf and stem tissues affected to a greater degree than nodule and root tissues at every sampling date. Phosphorus deficiency significantly reduced soluble reduced-N and ureide-N concentration in leaf and stem but did not affect those in root. The proportion of soluble reduced-N in leaf was reduced from 60% to 50% but increased from 10% to 20% in the roots. The proportion of ureide-N in leaf of control plants was higher than that in phosphorus deficient plants, whereas, roots of phosphorus deficient plants contained a higher propotion of ureide-N than those of control plants. These indicated that phosphorus deficiency not only inhibit nitrogen fixation of nodules but also restrict the translocation of fixed nitrogen out of the root system into the xylem.(Received April 4, 1997; accepted May 2, 1997)
To estimate the suitable method of phosphorus application in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice, available phosphorus, appearance of algal water bloom, and rice yield were investigated in paddy soil of Honam area from 1994 to 1995. Available phosphorus content with different regions was the highest in the east-west inland region of Noryeong mountain range and the inland region of Honam area and it was the lowest in the Charyeong south plains region. Available phosphorus content was the highest in the alluvial plains. and it was the lowest in dilluvial terrace. Frations of phosphorus in Jeonbug series were high in the order of Ca-P, Fe-P, and Al-P, respectively. Algal water bloom occurred highly in 100% and 70% basal applications before seeding, and slightly in no-fertilizer and 100% application of 3-leaf stage in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice. Suitable amount of phosphorus application was 21kg/ha in the single cropping paddy field of Fluvio-marine plain, and rice yield was increased 6% at 50% basal application.

In this study, optimum extraction conditions for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ash(SSA) were investigated. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted to determine optimal recovery conditions for Ca-P type phosphorus by using calcium component in the recycled aggregate residue. The phosphorus content of sewage sludge ash was confirmed to be 5.0 %. When $H_2SO_4$ was used as an extract, concentration of 1 N $H_2SO_4$, L/S ratio of 10, and extraction time of 30 min were found to be the optimal extraction conditions. Phosphorus was extracted by using optimal extraction conditions, and then the heavy metals eluted with phosphorus were removed using 1~20 g of cation exchange resin. In 20 g of cation exchange resin, Fe 71.3%, Cu 82.4%, Zn 79.9%, and Cr 15% were removed. After that, the mixing ratio of the calcium extract obtained from the recycled aggregate residue (RAR) was changed to 1:1, 1:5, 1:10. The pH of the SSA to RAR mixture was adjusted to 2, 4, 8 and 12 by the addition of 5 N NaOH to the mixture of 1:5, and the phosphorus was recovered as Ca-P type precipitate. The optimum pH was 8. When recycled aggregate residues were used, the weight of calcium phosphate increased, but the amount of wastewater generated also increased. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of recycled aggregate residue was not economically feasible.
After two highly weathered soils were treated with glucose, ammonium nitrate, monobasic potassium phosphate and biocides, and incubated for 4 or 6 weeks, adsorption tests were carried out to determine their effect on P adsorption. Glucose addition generally decreased P adsorption. The addition stimulated microbial activity, which might contribure to the reduced adsorption, probably through chelation and anion competition. Consistent endency was not observed with N treatment. Addition of P initially decreased P adsorption, probably through blockage of adsorption sites. Biocides generally decreased adsorption, probably because the microbes that 몬 been killed. Soil 1 with naturally lower levels of C and higher levels of aluminium adsorbed more P than soil 2. These results suggest that in highly weathered soils, which are low in available P and high in exchangeable Al, cultivation techniques which increase soil organic matter will also result in higher levels of plant-available P.
We examined the effect of simultaneous application of phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) on the phytotoxicity of lettuce in arsenic (As) contaminated soil using response surface methodology (RSM). To stabilize As and supply nutrient into soil, Fe and P were treated, respectively. Water soluble As and P was decreased by Fe application but increased by P application. Through phytotoxicity test, the result showed that only the addition of P affected lettuce root elongation even though both P and Fe were added. The correlation coefficients between root elongation and other indices indicated that the As content in the roots seemed to be the main reason that root growth was impeded. We could verify that the former result was not a passing phenomenon and Fe was necessarily needed to protect secondary pollution by exclusive usage of P fertilizer.
