  • 1. Solubility diagram was used to estimate Chemical form of the Soil phosphates which supply phosphorus into soil solutions under submerged condition with soils originated from granite and basalt rocks. The granite origin soils with different amounts of available phosphorus have no effect of phosphate application on rice yield, while the basalt origin soil has the big effect. 2. Almost same pattern of change in pH and concentrations of phosphorus and cations in the soil solutions during the submerging period was. shown. Almost no difference in the values was recognized between NPK and NK treatments of the granite origin soils, but the difference of the basalt origin soil was recognized. 3. it was estimated from solubility diagram that phosphorus concentration in the soil solutions was governed by phosphate applied and variscite in the soils for the early stage of submerging period, and then it became to be governed by vivianite in the soils.

  • Removal of phosphate from soil by leaching, runoff, and plant uptake is strongly influenced by the content and absorption characteristics of P in soil. In this study the relationships between water soluble phosphate and phosphate retention capacity of the soil was investigated. Water soluble and available phosphate, and phosphate absorption characteristics of 35 paddy soils were measured during incubation at $25^{\circ}C$. Water soluble phosphate content was highly correlated with available phosphate content, phosphorus absorption capacity (PAC), and phosphate absorbed (PS) in air-dried and wet soils. The most significant relationship was found between water soluble phosphate and the ratio of available phosphate and phosphate sorbed, and the relationship $0.01M\;CaCl_2-P=0.0828$ (Av. $P_2O_5/PS$)+0.0374 could be suggested for the estimation of water soluble phosphate from soil phosphorus characteristics.

  • A phosphate recovery system from artificial wastewater was developed using a completely mixed phosphorus crystallization reactor, in which powdered converter slag was used as a seeding crystal. In preliminary test, the optimal pH range for meta-stable hydroxyapatite crystallization for high phosphorus concentration was observed to be 6.0 to 7.0, which was different from the conventionally known pH range (8.0~9.5) for effective crystallization in relatively low phosphorus concentration less than 5 mg/L. The average phosphorus removal efficiency in a lab-scaled completely mixed crystallization system for artificial wastewater with about 100 mg/L of average $PO_4-P$ concentration was shown to be 60.9% for 40 days of lapsed time. XRD analysis exhibited that crystalline of hydroxyapatite formed on the surface of seed crystal, which was also observed in SEM analysis. In EDS mapping analysis, composition mole ratio (=Ca/P) of the crystalline was found to be 1.78, indicating the crystalline on the surface of seed crystal is likely to be hydroxyapatite. Particle size distribution analysis showed that average size of seed crystal increased from $28{\mu}m$ up to $50{\mu}m$, suggesting that phosphorus recycling from wastewater with high phosphorus concentration can be successfully obtained by using the phosphorus crystallization recovery system.

  • This study investigated the effect of organic matter on the precipitation of struvite and calcium phosphate for phosphorus recovery from synthetic dairy wastewater. Batch precipitation experiments were performed to precipitate phosphorus from solutions containing $PO_4{^{3-}}$ and $NH_4{^+}$ by the addition of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$, separately, at varying pH, Mg/P and Ca/P molar ratios, and organic matter concentrations. Soluble total organic solids exhibited more inhibition to precipitation due to potential interaction with other dissolved ionic species involved in phosphorus precipitation. Xylan with low total acidity only exhibited significant inhibition at very high concentrations in synthetic wastewater (at up to 100 g/L). No significant inhibition was observed for Mg and Ca precipitation at relatively lower concentrations (at up to 1.2 g/L). MINTEQ simulations show that dissolved organic matter (DOM) as humic substances (HS) can cause significant inhibition even at relatively low concentrations of 0.165 g/L fulvic acid. However, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis suggested that xylan altered the crystal structure of both precipitates and had caused the formation of smaller sized struvite crystals with slightly rougher surfaces This could be due to xylan molecules adhering on the surface of the crystal potentially blocking active sites and limit further crystal growth. Smaller particle sizes will have negative practical impact because of poorer settleability.

  • Understanding phosphorus metabolism in photosynthetic organisms is important as it is closely associated with enhanced crop productivity and pollution management for natural ecosystems (e.g., algal blooming). Accordingly, we exploited highly time-resolved metabolic responses to different levels of phosphate deprivation in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a photosynthetic model organism. We conducted non-targeted primary metabolite profiling using gas-chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis. Primarily, we systematically identified main contributors to degree-wise responses corresponding to the levels of phosphate deprivation. Additionally, we systematically characterized the metabolite sets specific to different phosphate conditions and their interactions with culture time. Among them were various types of fatty acids that were most dynamically modulated by the phosphate availability and culture time in addition to phosphorylated compounds.

  • The feasibility of using cork oak bark for phosphorus removal from wastewater was evaluated in this study. Recently, development of more cost-effective media while maintaining high efficiency in pollutants removal has received concern. Barks have a negative surface charge and, hence, tend to show a high affinity to bind cations, and they need to undergo chemical modification to increase their adsorption capacity of anions. Bark was hydrolyzed by HCl solution and it received modification using an aqueous solution of high molecular weight polyethylenimine(PEI). Surface modification with HCl and PEI resulted in a decrease of specific surface area of the bark from $1.932 m^2/g$ to $1.094 m^2/g$. The adsorption experiments were carried out in batch tests and the data were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich isotherm equations. Phosphate removal rate was higher at the lower solution pH possibly due to the form of phosphate ion in solution. For the initial phosphate concentration of 10 mg/L, maximum adsorption was 20.88 mg P/g at pH 3 and 12.02 mg P/g at pH 5. Mechanism of phosphorus sorption onto the HCl-PEI bark was examined through FT-IR spectrometer. Ion exchange between $NH^+$ and $H_2PO_4{^-}$ appeared to be a key mechanism of phosphate adsorption onto the HCl-PEI bark surface.

  • Determination of the pH value and analyses of the available phosphorus of some soils under the forest and grassland Kwang-nung have been examined to study the relationship between the soil pH and available phophorus. The results might be summarized as follows: 1) The available phosphorus decrease steadily as the pH goes up to 5.2. However, at the pH 5.2∼6.3, it shows an increase and decreases again as the rise above pH 6.3. 2) There is a significant difference in the amounts of the soil phosphate among the areas sampled. 3) The statistical analysis of the data obtained shows that soil phosphate is limiting factor governing the distribution of natural vegetal pattern.

  • In order to investigate the effects of phosphorous fertilizer such as fused Phosphate, compound fertilizer and triple phosphate on barley(growth and yield at the fixed level of nitrogen and potassium, 4 level of hosphorous) has been tested at Suwon. Iri. Kwangju ani Daegu with randomized completeblock design. The results obtained could be summarized as follows. 1. In four locations. increased application of phosphorus have brought earlier maturity in barley regardless the type of fertilizer but fused phosphate considered to have more effects on stimulation of maturity of barley compare with the others. 3. Fused phosphate increased yield higher by-8kg/10a application compare with the same level of compound fertilizer and triple phosphate but there was no differences in yield at 12kg/10a phosphate but there was no differences in yield at 12kg/l0a application among the fertilizers except Kwangju and Suwon. 3. Grain weight was considerably higher in application of fused phosphate Thus are considered effects phosphate. 4. Optimum amount of phosphorous fertilizer was considered 8kg/l0a. Application of 4kg per 10a produced lower yield than 8kg and slightly or no increased yield was observed in 12kg application. 5. Among the 4kg/10a applied condition of phosphorous fertilizers, yield was decreased at fused phosphate treatment compare with the others and this fact resulted supposedly due to the lower portion of valid phosphorus in fused phosphate because of its citric acid solubility. At level of 12kg/10a application fused phosphate was considered more effective in yield increment.

  • Used polyurethane was chemically degraded by treatments with flame retardants such as tris(3-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP). The structure of degraded products (DEP) was analyzed by FT-IR and P-NMR and it turned out to be phosphorus containing oligourethanes. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced by using the degraded products (DEP) as flame retardants. The flammability of recycled rigid polyurethane was investigated. The recycled polyurethane shows a reduced flammability over virgin polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the recycled polyurethane foams with various amounts of DEP, the combustion parameters of the foam was measured by a cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of recycled PU shows the same uniform cell morphology as virgin PU.

  • This study was done to explain the role of limestone which might intervene in the phosphorus cycle in a lake. The effects of limestone on the dissolution of phosphate were estimated by simulations with the computer model Visual MINTEQ, which is designed for the chemical equilibrium calculations. According to the calculations limestone shows remarkable effects for the suppression of phosphate dissolution. The limestone can suppress the dissolution of phosphates by sacrificing themselves to acids, and as a consequence can increase the hardness and alkalinity of the lake. Both hardness and alkalinity play an important role in reducing soluble P and thus alleviate the eutrophication potential.
