  • Recently, audio-visual speech recognition (AVSR) has been studied to cope with noise problems in speech recognition. In this paper we propose a novel method of deciding weighting factors for audio-visual information fusion. We adopt the particle swarm optimization (PSO) to weighting factor determination. The AVSR experiments show that PSO-based normalized confidence measures (NCM) improve the rejection performance of mis-recognized words by 33%.

  • In this paper, details of the design and implementation of a voice source simulator using Simulink and Matlab are discussed. This simulator is an implementation by model-based design concept. Voice sources can be analyzed and manipulated through various factors by choosing options from GUI input and selecting pre-defined blocks or user created ones. This kind of simulation tool can simplify the procedure of analyzing speech signals for various purposes such as voice quality analysis, pathological voice analysis, and speech coding. Also, basic analysis functions are supported to compare the original signal and the manipulated ones.

  • Language is not abstract. We use language to communicate out thoughts and emotions. Films are the most public form of arts, where language is all essential part; however, there have been, if any, few films the main theme of which is language. Although language may not be the main theme of films, we can find many kinds of information relating to language and linguistics by careful examination. In reference to some films, we can talk about subjects in the fields of theoretical linguistics such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. In addition, subjects in applied linguistics such as sociolinguistics and computational linguistics may be discussed with reference to other films.

  • In this paper, temporal variables of French oral discourse are analyzed and interpreted. They are distinguished in two Troops, the temporal external variable and the temporal internal variable The external variable is determined by the breathing function as the physical condition of the verbal message and the internal variable is directly associated with multiple effects by the accentuation on final syllable of rhythmic group in actual French. Temporal variables, external and internal, are taken as devices of verbal support that serve to create immediate effects of oral production.

  • Korean learners of Chinese have diniculties in pronouncing Chinese tones which distinguish the meaning of words, because there are not such tones in Korean language. It makes Koreans hard to acquire Chinese. In this paper, I present the followings: First, I examine the characteristics of the tones pronounced by Korean speakers, exploiting the method of modern experimental phonetics. Second, I present the pedagogy of Chinese tones, considering the typical errors shown by the experiments on Korean speakers. The Pedagogy Presented in this Paper, which is based on the results of experiments, is not perfect. However, I expect this paper to serve as instrumental tools to help Korean speakers to improve their command of Chinese.

  • This paper proposes a method for building a transliteration dictionary, which is based on pronouncing information extracted from two kinds of existing dictionaries. Also, it proposes a method for transforming the pronouncing information into Korean translitered words. To express the pronouncing information, we define Phoman code system. In order to avoid phonetic estimation process of English words which is the most important problem, the proposed method uses the pronouncing information extracted from the existing dictionaries. Therefore, unlike previous approaches, the proposed method does not need any incomplete phonetic estimation process so that it can produce accurate transliteration results. The proposed method has been fully implemented.

  • The speech of Sino-Korean has been evolved from geopolitical cause since 1945. The aim of this study is to collect Yanji dialectal speech and to compare with South Korean dialectal speech. Twenty Yanbian university students participated as informants. Acoustic speech informations are analyzed using the Multi-Speech Windows Vista version. Dialectal speech characteristics of Yanji sino-Korean showed posterior vowel /${\alpha}$/, neutralization of mid-vowel /o/ between /o/ and /Ɔ/. Lenis stop sound showed the tendency of glottalization based on VOT value. Sibilant sound contains aspiration following constriction and lateral /l/ realized the approximant /r/.

  • This paper aims at exploring a putative positional neutralization produced at the phonetics/phonology interface. It was designed to determine whether Korean intervocalic laryngeal consonants are phonetically distant from geminates, plain consonants, or laryngeal consonants in consonant clusters. It was found that the contrast between laryngeal singletons and geminates was neutralized intervocalically, and that both of these were patterned with heteroganic consonant sequences rather than with plain singletons.

  • Jenkins (2000, 2007) suggested lingua franca core (LFC) of English as an international language (EIL) context. According to her, intelligibility of English pronunciation of L2 English speakers and English learners is more important than pronunciation accuracy in English communication. Her suggestion has been widely accepted in Korean classroom situations, so the systematic teaching of English pronunciation has been rarely emphasized. In this paper it is argued that the LFC of English is widely misinterpreted in Korea while some of her suggestions themselves are also misleading. This paper tries to redefine Jenkins' LFC and provide suggestions for teaching LFC in Korea.

  • The present study investigated how the kinematics of the /a/-to-/i/ tongue movement in Korean would be influenced by prosodic boundary. The /a/-to-/i/ sequence was used as 'transboundary' test materials which occurred across a prosodic boundary as in /ilnjəʃ$^h$a/ # / minsakwae/ ('일년차#민사과에' 'the first year worker' # 'dept. of civil affairs'). It also tested whether the V-to-V tongue movement would be further influenced by its syllable structure with /m/ which was placed either in the coda condition (/am#i/) or in the onset condition (/a#mi). Results of an EMA (Electromagnetic Articulagraphy) study showed that kinematical parameters such as the movement distance (displacement), the movement duration, and the movement velocity (speed) all varied as a function of the boundary strength, showing an articulatory strengthening pattern of a "larger, longer and faster" movement. Interestingly, however, the larger, longer and faster pattern associated with boundary marking in Korean has often been observed with stress (prominence) marking in English. It was proposed that language-specific prosodic systems induce different ways in which phonetics and prosody interact: Korean, as a language without lexical stress and pitch accent, has more degree of freedom to express prosodic strengthening, while languages such as English have constraints, so that some strengthening patterns are reserved for lexical stress. The V-to-V tongue movement was also found to be influenced by the intervening consonant /m/'s syllable affiliation, showing a more preboundary lengthening of the tongue movement when /m/ was part of the preboundary syllable (/am#i/). The results, together, show that the fine-grained phonetic details do not simply arise as low-level physical phenomena, but reflect higher-level linguistic structures, such as syllable and prosodic structures. It was also discussed how the boundary-induced kinematic patterns could be accounted for in terms of the task dynamic model and the theory of the prosodic gesture ($\pi$-gesture).
