  • An oxidimetric titrant, 2, 3-dichloro-5, 6-dicyano-1, 4-benzoquinone in anhydrous acetic acid is used for the semimicro-determination of hydrazine hydrate, phenylhydrazine hydrochloride, isoniazid and iproniazid phosphate in pure forms as well as in some pharmaceutical preparations containing isoniazid and iproniazid phosphate. The end point was detected potentiometrically using a platinum-calomel combination electrode. The results obtained are compared statistically with those obtained by the official methods and they are in good agreement.

  • A new class of halobenzyloxy or alkoxy 1,2,4-triazoles and their hydrochlorides were synthesized through cyclization starting from commercially available phenylhydrazine. The structures were characterized by MS, IR and $^1H$ NMR spectra as well as elemental analyses. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial activities in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC29213), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (N315), Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli (ATCC25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella dysenteriae, Eberthella typhosa, and antifungal activities against Candida albicans (ATCC76615), Aspergillus fumigatus by broth microdilution assay method. The results of preliminary bioassay indicated that 3-(2,4-difluorobenzyloxy)-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole hydrochloride exhibited the best inhibitory activity with an MIC value of 56.25 ${\mu}M$ against P. aeruginosa superior to Chloramphenicol, and showed comparable activity with Chloramphenicol against E. coli (ATCC25922).

  • 2-Thiouracil-5-sulphonic acid N-(4-acetylphenyl) Amide (1) was reacted with a series of aromatic aldehydes giving chalcones 2 (Claisen-Schemidt reaction), some of these chalcones were reacted with urea and thiourea giving pyrimidine-2-one and pyrimidine-2 thione derivatives respectively of the type 3a,b and 4a,b. In addition many chalcones were reacted with hydroxylamine hydrochloride giving isoxazoline derivatives 5a,b. They could also reacted with phenylhydrazine to give pyrazoline derivatives 5a,b, chalcones also were reacted withethylcyano acetate and/or malononitryl in pyridine giving pyran derivatives 7a,c and 8a,c. In another pathway chalcones were epoxidised by $H_{2}O_{2}$ giving epoxides 9a,c which in turn were reacted with phenylhydrazine giving 4-hydroxypyrazoline derivatives 10a,c. In another reaction chalcones were reacted with ethylcyanoacetate in presence of amm.acetate giving pyridone derivatives 11a,d which could be prepared also in exellent yield from compound 1 by its reaction with certain aromatic aldehydes and ethylcyanoacetate in presence of ammonium acetate. Finally, compound 1 was reacted with semicarbazide giving semicarbazone intermediate 12 which in turn was reacted with thionyl chloride giving thiadiazole derivative 13. The biological effects of some of the new synthesized compounds were also investigated.

  • As a fundamental study on organic electroluminescence(EL), blue emitting materials were synthesized and characterized. Individual blue colored hydrazone derivatives were synthesized from the reaction of aldehydes (phthalaldehyde, isophthalaldehyde) with the corresponding amnios (1-methyl -1-phenylhydrazine, 1,1-diphenylhydrazine hydrochloride). Recrystallization of hydrazones from chloroform revealed the melting temperature within $142∼156^{\circ}C$. Photoluminescence(PL) analysis on each hydrazone showed that emission range were blue(458∼478 nm). The structure of obtained hydrazones were elucidated by FT-IR, $^1$H-NMR and C, H, N elemental analyzer.

  • The spectrophotometric determination of trace selenium(Ⅳ) using its catalytic reaction has been studied in aqueous solutions. The catalytic reaction of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride with selenium(Ⅳ) in an acidic aqueous medium produces benzenediazonium ion which will be converted into a red-coloured azo dye by coupling with H-acid(8-amino-1-naphtol-3,6-disulfonic acid disodium salt). For the reaction, the experimental conditions such as amounts of the reagents and pH of the sample solutions were optimized. After 15 ml of the sample solution was treated with 1 ml of 0.1 M EDTA solution to mask $Fe^{3+}$, etc., 1 ml of 0.06 M phenylhydrazine hydrochloride, 1 ml of 0.02 M H-acid, and 3 ml of 0.3 M-$KClO_3$ were added into the solution, sequentially. The solution was adjusted to pH 1.4 with HCl. After it was heated in a steam bath for 30 minutes, the solution was cooled down to a room temperature and then diluted to 25 ml with deionized distilled water. A blank solution for the absorbance measurement was prepared from the deionized water. The absorbance was measured at 527 nm. Using the above procedure, the trace amount of selenium was determined in natural waters such as tap, river and pond waters by a standard curve method and recoveries of Se spiked to samples were also obtained. From the recoveries of 104 to 111%, it could be concluded that this method was applicable to the quantitative determination of ng/ml level of selenium in natural waters.
