This paper focuses on extracting formants from transfer function, derived from linear prediction analysis of speech signal. The second derivative of the log magnitude spectrum of the transfer function, the first and third derivatives of the phase spectrum of the transfer function in the z-plane are discussed. Their resolutions of detecting formants are analyzed and some comparisons are given. Theoretical analyses and experimental results show that the third derivative of the phase spectrum decays more rapidly around the formant locations than the first derivative of the phase spectrum and the second derivative of the log magnitude spectrum. Compared with the second derivative of the log spectrum and the first derivative of the phase spectrum, the third derivative of the phase spectrum has higher resolution in frequency domain and provides more accurate formant extraction.

The phase noise spectrum distribution for remote controller using the BPSK mode and low data rate of 50 kbps was designed and proposed in this paper. In case of applying the BPSK that transmission performance is superior to FSK method, the performance degradations due to phase noise are generated. To minimize the phase noise effect, it is important to dispatch the digital signal in channel environment with required phase noise characteristics. To provide the terminal design technique and the proper channel environment with required phase noise characteristics, the phase noise spectrum distribution was designed for required phase noise characteristics. By analyzing the phase noise effects for damping factor and noise bandwidth of the carrier recovery circuit, the phase noise spectrum design that consider the damping factor and noise bandwidth was performed. Based on the IESS-308 standards, also, the phase noise effects was analyzed. The phase noise spectrum design techniques and phase noise spectrum that is suitable to remote controller were proposed.

The dispersive phase velocity of a wave propagating through a system is an important parameter and carries valuable information in non-destructive tests related to multilayered systems such as a soil site. The dispersive phase velocity of a wave can be determined using the phase spectrum, which is easily evaluated through the cross power spectrum. However, the phase spectrum as determined using the cross power spectrum is sensitive to background noise which always exists in the field. This causes difficulties in the determination of the dispersive phase velocities. In this paper, a new method to evaluate the phase spectrum using the harmonic wavelet transform is proposed. The proposed method can successfully remove background noise effects. To evaluate the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations of multi-layered systems were performed. Phase spectrums by the proposed method were found to be in good agreement with the actual phase spectrums under conditions characterized by heavy background noise. This shows the potential of the proposed method.
The dispersive phase velocity of a wave propagating through multilayered systems such as a soil site is an important parameter and carries valuable information in non-destructive site characterization tests. The dispersive phase velocity of a wave can be determined using the phase spectrum, which is easily evaluated through the cross power spectrum. However, the phase spectrum determined using the cross power spectrum is easily distorted by background noise which always exists in the field. This causes distortion of measured signal and difficulties in the determination of the dispersive phase velocities. In this paper, a new method to evaluate the phase spectrum using the harmonic wavelet transform is proposed and the phase spectrum by the proposed method is applied to the determination of dispersion curve. The proposed method can successfully remove background noise effects. To evaluate the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations of multi-layered systems were performed. Phase spectrums and dispersion curves determined by the proposed method were found to be in good agreement with the actual phase spectrums and dispersion curves biased by heavy background noise. The comparison manifests the proposed method to be a very useful tool to overcome noise effects.

A weather radar usually extracts the necessary information from the return Doppler spectrum moment estimates. Phase stability is a very important factor in obtaining accurate and reliable information in a Doppler weather radar system since the system phase noise may seriously degrade the weather spectrum moment estimation quality. These spectrum moment estimates are commonly obtained using the pulse pair method which is simple to implement and fast enough to process an enormous amount of weather radar data in real time. Therefore, an analytical method is developed in this paper to analyze and quantify the phase noise effects on the pulse pair spectrum moment estimates in terms of the phase noise power and broadness.

The characteristics of harmonic phase angles and phase angle differences contained in earthquake ground motions such as El Centre 1530 NS, Taftl 1952 NS, Hachinohe 1968 NS and Mexico 1985 are figured, which have been mostly overlooked in contrast with the importance placed on harmonic amplitudes. And, energy input spectrum of structures excited by such an earthquake motion is expressed with smoothed Fourier amplitude spectrum. In dynamic response analysis, there must be earthquake ground accelerations which contain the phase angle, the phase angle difference and energy input spectrum characteristics of the zone considered to be constructed building structures. To make clear the importance of phase angle differences, 4-earthquake ground motions are normalized by 200 gal and energy input spectrum characteristics of normalized 4-earthquake ground motions are compared.

The correlation identification of the subsurface is a novel electrical prospecting method which could suppress stochastic noise. This method is increasingly being utilized by geophysicists. It achieves the frequency response of the underground media through division of the cross spectrum of the input & output signal and the auto spectrum of the input signal. This is subject to the spectral leakage when the cross spectrum and the auto spectrum are computed from cross correlation and autocorrelation function by Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT, "To obtain an accurate frequency response of the earth system, we propose an improved correlation identification method which uses all phase Fast Fourier Transform (APFFT) to acquire the cross spectrum and the auto spectrum. Simulation and engineering application results show that compared to existing correlation identification algorithm the new approach demonstrates more precise frequency response, especially the phase response of the system under identification.

The ultrasonic longitudinal wave velocities propagating normal to the surface in thin plates were measured with the amplitude spectrum method. The accuracy of the velocity measurement in o.5mm thick plates was 0.1%. In 4.239mm thick plate the phase velocities at the frequency band of 5MHz-15MHz were measured with the phase spectrum method and the amplitude spectrum method, and the velocity difference between two methods was less than 20m/s.

Phase noise spectrum distributions of signal generators for next-generation VSAT satellite system based on DVB-RCS2 were analyzed in this paper. The forward link of VSAT system utilizes the APSK higher-order modulation methods based on the DVB-S2 ACM, the modulation methods of the return link utilizes the higher-order PSK and QAM based on the DVB-RCS2. In digital satellite system using the higher-order modulation techniques, the phase noise have an effect on transmission performance, the transmission performance is dominantly degraded by the phase noise of signal generators in the transmission system. The phase noise spectrum distribution of signal generators are analyzed by considering the ACM conditions that adopts the modulation techniques and data rates due to satellite transmission environment. The proper phase noise spectrum distribution for next-generation VSAT system based on DVB-RCS2 are proposed from the analyzed phase noise spectrum characteristics.

This paper presents a Fourier based algorithm for estimating the parameters of the low frequency oscillating modes. The proposed methods estimates various parameters(frequency, damping factor, mode magnitude, phase) by fitting Fourier spectrum and phase with a damped exponential cosine function. Dominant frequency is selected by taking frequency corresponding to the peak spectrum, and damping factor is estimated using the left/right spectra of Fourier spectrum. In addition, mode magnitude is calculated by the normalized peak spectrum, and phase is estimated from spectrum phase. Also, we introduce an accuracy index in order to determine the accuracy of the estimated parameters, and the index is calculated using the deviations of the peak spectrum and the left/right spectra. The parameter estimation methods proposed in this paper include very simple arithmetical processes, so the algorithms are simple and the calculation speed is very fast. The proposed methods are applied to test functions with two dominant modes. The results show that the proposed methods are highly applicable to low frequency parameter estimation.
